Extra free fun at the Submarine Museum this SummerThis summer, whatever the weather, every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the school holidays, families can meet our challenge to be part of Sammy Sardine’s crew onboard HMS Alliance. Starting on Tuesday 30 July and running through to Thursday 29 August these activities will be taking place and you can drop in to do them anytime from 10am to 3pm. The Sammy Sardine Summer School activities include crafty crafts, making instruments, bubble making, baking, code breaking and a boat fest!

Families can also find out just how smelly submariners were, the ghastly food they ate and how sub loos could turn into poo fountains at our family exhibition Horrible Science of Submarines, written by the author of the Horrible Science books, Nick Arnold and illustrated by Tony De Saulles. For the very young, splashing fun with water, dressing up as pirates to play on the pirate ship is the order of the day in Busy Boats Bay, a new indoor play area for under 5s. A visit to the Submarine Museum also includes a tour of HMS Alliance, the only walkthrough WW2 era submarine in the UK, led by a submariner who can tell firsthand what life was like to live under the sea.

The House at Pooh Corner at MottisfontThis summer, explore the wonderful world of a boy and his bear, when Christopher Robin, Winnie-the-Pooh and the Hundred Acre Wood are celebrated at the idyllic setting of National Trust property Mottisfont in Hampshire.

At the heart of this unique summer of fun is an opportunity to enjoy 36 hand-painted illustrations by E.H. Shepard, created for the books Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh

Corner, kindly on loan from Egmont UK Ltd. Some of these works have never been seen before, and none of them have ever been on show in the UK. Each artwork is instantly recognisable, featuring Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger, amongst other characters beloved by generations of children and adults, all based on the nursery toys that belonged to author AA Milne’s son, Christopher Robin.Find out more at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/mottisfont

Join the Summer Reading Challenge in your library this summerChildren's reading can 'dip' during the summer and research shows that taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge

can help children keep up their reading skills during the long summer holiday. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps three quarters of a million children aged 4-11 get into libraries to keep up their reading skills and confidence over the summer break.

Children are encouraged to read six books from whatever genre they like - fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library.

Each year sees a different theme - this year’s it’s ‘Creepy House’. Each time your child finishes a book they’ll receive stickers and rewards - and there's a certificate for everyone who finishes. It doesn’t matter what level your child is at either as the challenge is open to children of all reading abilities.

Your child’s school will probably give you some information but if you want to know more visit www.creepy-house.co.uk where you’ll find out all about the challenge. You’ll also find a brilliant ‘book sorter’ which allows children to search for books that will suit their age and tastes.

Working parents – need help with childcare during the Summer holiday?

Whether you have a baby, child or young person requiring reliable, quality, flexible care during the long holiday, your local Family Information Service (FIS) can help. The FIS holds information about all Ofsted registered childcare services, covering an age range of 0 – 16 years, and catering for additional needs. If the cost is a barrier then the FIS can provide guidance on the types of schemes available to help with this, including Tax Credits and Childcare Vouchers.

To find your local FIS visit the website:www.daycaretrust.org.uk/nafis

How to series

Computer games:How to help your children play safelyAccording to the Office for National Statistics ninety six per cent of children aged 10 to 15 years in the UK now have computer access at home and 89 percent of children have at least one games console.

This is despite the fact that research has proved some video games can have a negative impact on children’s behaviour such as increased aggression and that screens are increasingly turning into electronic babysitters, with young people

in the UK spending more time plugged in than ever . So what can parents do if their child is continually asking them for the latest game, or most of their free time is spent playing computer games? Katharine Hill, UK Director at leading national charity Care for the Family says: “Parents have a key role to play in managing children's access to

computer and video games and this is an area where, as parents, we have to do our homework, get up to speed – and get involved! Even with older teens it is well worth finding out what they are playing and trying to help them create a safe environment. With younger children especially, it’s important to get involved at the very beginning and set boundaries.”

1 Watch your kids while they play Mum Liz says: “I was shocked when I watched my son playing a fighting game. If he failed to clear a level he would get really angry. If I wanted to talk to him he would be very irritable and rude. I used to watch for those signs - frustration, ag-gression, rudeness - and if I felt a game was just too much for him, I’d encourage him to take time out.”

2 Use the guidance you're givenAll games sold in the UK include age ratings and most also have indicators of content on the cover. In addition, there are several magazines and websites which review games. If your kids are serious gamers, then they may already buy magazines regularly - take a few minutes to flick through one and familiarise yourself with this world. Insist that you vet any games before they are bought - and try to make sure you see any games they borrow from friends before they start playing them. Talk to the parents of your child’s friends to see if you can agree a consistent approach.

3 Set time limits on playing games Agree time limits in advance according to the age of your child. Dad Jon says: “The longer children play the lower their concentration span is so a positive way to set time limits is to explain that to your kids. If they are stuck on a level, it might be worth them taking ‘time out’ to return to their challenge with a fresh mind. When they get back to the game after a break, they’ll be surprised how quickly they can overcome the obstacles which have been frustrating them.”

4 Play the games with your kids Make it an activity you can do together. Dad Matt says: “Playing games with my children is a great way to monitor what’s out there. It wouldn’t be fair to say ‘that’s unsuitable’ when I have no idea what the game is about or involves. I also find it a great way to bond, especially with the vast host of multiplayer games on the market. We often have our own family ‘team’ that looks out for each other and works together. It’s fun to have something in common.”

5 Channel their game-playing positively “As our boys enjoy sport, I try to encour-age them to play some of the sporting games when there’s rarely an issue over content”, says mum Kate. If you’re feeling exasperated about the amount of time your kids are spend-ing playing games, remember that the computer games industry is big business. Encourage your kids, if they really love gaming, to get into the techie program-ming side of things. They could even pursue a career reviewing games in magazines, or create games themselves. Who knows - your kids may be the next big thing in computer games!

Does your baby have Positional Plagiocephaly? What is Positional Plagiocephaly? Positional Plagiocephaly, also known as “flat-head syndrome” is a condition characterised by a flattening on one side of the back of the head. It may also involve bulging of the forehead, fullness of the cheek and ear misalignment on the same side as the flattening.

Under the broad term “flat head syndrome” there are two other head shapes: Brachycephaly and Dolichocephaly also sometimes known as Scaphocephaly. In Brachycephaly the head is wide in relation to its length and appears flat at the back. The head may have a high “peaked” appearance, and sometimes both sides of the forehead can be bulged. Dolichocephaly is when the head is narrow in relation to length (front to back).

Newborn babies often have some asymmetry of the head. This can happen before, during or after birth due to a number of factors including; In-utero constraint (multiple births, large baby), positioning during pregnancy, prematurity, trauma during birth, low activity levels, or from a preferred sleeping position.

What are the treatment options? The first option is to try repositioning the baby’s head as much as possible with the aim of encouraging it to rest its head on the non-flattened area. Ideally repositioning should be carried out from birth, or at least as soon as

any flattening is noticed. By alternating the head position you can reduce the risk of them developing ‘Positional Plagiocephaly.’Babies must always be placed on their backs to sleep to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Hampshire Orthotics, a newly formed private orthotic company was recently launched at St James Chiropractic Clinic in Southampton. Lucy Best is mum to 3 young daughters, owner and orthotist

with 20 years experience and will be offering the

whole range of orthotic treatment including: spinal braces, shoes, orthotic insoles, leg braces, arm and hand splints and the

LOCband, a special helmet for babies with

plagiocephaly.

Lucy says “if your baby has stiffness on one side of their neck, you will notice that they always face the same way. It is important to get this corrected by a medical professional. If left untreated it can cause a flattening of the skull or plagiocephaly as the head is always lying in the same position. Plagiocephaly can result in facial asymmetry which may be a cosmetic concern when the child is older. It may also make the fitting of glasses and crash helmets more difficult.

The LOCband is non-invasive and works by applying a gentle constant pressure over the areas of your baby’s skull which are most prominent

while allowing unrestricted growth over the flattened areas. It is a pain-free treatment.

The head band treatment is for babies with moderate or severe plagiocephaly and needs to be worn for 23 hours per day for about 3-6 months. As the head is constantly growing, the helmet needs to be regularly checked and adjusted over approximately ten appointments. Previously babies would had to go to the London Orthotic Consultancy in Kingston for the LOCband treatment as it is not usually available on the NHS. Lucy says “it will be so much easier for local parents and babies to have the treatment here in Southampton.”

For more information on the LOCband or other orthotic treatment, contact: Hampshire Orthotics023 8000 5505lucybest@hampshire-orthotics.co.ukwww.hampshire-orthotics.co.ukwww.londonorthotics.co.uk/plagiocephaly

Did you know?

Visitors will be able to experience the sights and sounds of Southampton in 1912, when it was home port to some 23 steamship companies including Royal Mail, Union Castle and American Lines.

The transfer of White Star Line’s transatlantic express service from Liverpool to Southampton in 1907 had established Southampton as Britain’s premier passenger port.

The town was bustling with activity and the local economy flourished with new shops, restaurants and businesses. The White Star Dock, later known as Ocean Dock, opened in 1911. It was from here, Berth 44, that the Titanic was to leave Southampton on 10 April 1912.

What’s coming up?
