Huddersfield based Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice has announced that Graham Leslie (successful serial entrepreneur and Professor at the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre) and Nina Hossain (ITN Newscaster) have become Ambassadors for the charity. Both Graham Leslie and Nina Hossain are locals and keen supporters of the charity.

A mum herself, Nina commented ‘There are 700 families in the Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield area that could benefit from the care and support from the charity and we need to make them aware of the help that is available to them. The charity needs to raise a gigantic £2.8million each year and we need to support the team at Forget Me Not Children’s

Hospice to ensure that they are getting the right funding this year, for future years and decades to come.’

Graham Leslie and Nina Hossain will join the Charity’s existing Ambassadors, Hannah Cockroft (MBE, British Wheel Chair Athlete, Paralympic Gold Medalist) and Daniel Lloyd (British Racing Car Driver, Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholarship Winner).

Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice welcomes new Ambassadors

Abbey House Museum, Kirkstall, Leeds has launched a brand new exhibition celebrating Yorkshire’s past.

The displays are mostly put together from Leeds Museums’ own collections, plus a dressing up area for little ones to pretend they are animals from the Great Yorkshire Show! Abbey House Museum offers a lovely cafe and shop in addition to the amazing indoor street showing what life was like for the different tradespeople in and around Leeds in the Victorian era and remains a family favourite. An outdoor play area and beautiful ruins of Kirkstall Abbey are a short walk away from the free parking.

The Magic Box toyshop in Marsden has teamed up with The Power Station Gym in Slaithwaite to sponsor Marsden Football Club under 7s.

The team was recently set up by Steven Avison, a local lad himself. Just 4 children turned up for the first training session, but 4 months on, around 20 children regularly attend. The sponsorship money will help the club fund new kits for the under 7s and will be a great boost to the club.

Lisa Lancaster, owner of The Magic Box, took over the existing business in November 2013 and wanted to get involved in the community where she also grew up and is thrilled to be sponsoring the local team.

Millions glued to the screen for the final of 2013’s Great British Bake Off (GBBO) - Frances Quinn beats off tough competition to triumph. How has she kept it all together?

“It was stressful –the judges’ comments can hit you hard.” Famously Frances was told to be aware of ’style over substance’ during the show.

This is a lady with a lot of style AND substance. A designer for top clothing brand, Joules, she is taking time out to pursue baking-oriented challenges, but the 31 year old from Market Harborough has developed her love of baking combined with design over many years.

The youngest of 5, the kitchen played a big part in family life and from a young age she would go and make a batch of flapjack – there was always a lunch box to be filled!

Many parents are concerned over sugar and additives in our children’s food – and Frances uses ingredients which are lower sugar, with natural colourings and few additives.

“I use ginger or chocolate for colouring, perhaps with a bit of gold leaf, like my owl-shaped shortbread with almonds, rather than making brightly coloured, sweetie covered cakes.”

At Joules the colours she developed all had reference to food! She’d take bakes to work to test out themed cake designs on colleagues and Joules asked her to include her bakes on its blog. She is often asked will she pursue baking OR clothing design.

“I don’t want to choose, I think they mesh together. I don’t want to be boxed in and hope to keep on creating in both spheres. And there is a book deal in the ‘piping bag’ line!! It has all been incredible.”

As we finish, I head straight for our family kitchen, hide the candy-coated-chocolate-bean cake decorations to the back of the cupboard - and begin to rethink baking with the kids!

The historic buildings of Hipperholme Grammar’s Senior School are a famous local landmark but before they were developed, the earliest documented history of the School was 480 years ago this year, in 1564, when the first references to a predecessor School at Coley Church (less than a mile away) are recorded.

At the beginning of February, Bailiffe Bridge Junior and Infant School took singers from classes 4 to 6 to join 1000s of children from the North of England at the Manchester Arena. This was as part of a nationwide series of concerts organised by Young Voices at venues more used to pop groups like Little Mix and One Direction!! Young Voices is the largest children’s choir organiser in the world.

Head teacher, Helen Proctor, said, “We have chosen pupils who showed an interest in music from the older end of the school who will be confident in singing at Manchester Arena. The pupils have been working hard learning songs which all the schools will be singing together.”

The organisers believe that by introducing children to a wide variety of music and performance opportunities, they support and encourage everyone to learn, enjoy and share music and singing.

Families Pennines asked Huddersfield’s Numberworks’nWords about preparing for SATs and 11+ exams coming up soon.

What�are�‘SATs’?

SATs (Standard Attainment Tests) are taken in Year 2 and Year 6. Year 2 children are assessed by their teacher setting and grading short pieces of work in English, mathematics and science. In Year 6, children sit formal exams lasting 45 minutes each which are sent away for external marking.

What�is�tested?�

Year 2 children are given levels for reading, writing and speaking and listening. They will also be graded in mathematics and science.

Year 6 children sit tests in English reading, English grammar, punctuation and spelling and mathematics (including a mental mathematics test) and graded from 3 to 5. Writing is graded through a teacher assessed task. In addition, a small number of children also take a level 6 assessment, if their class teacher feels they demonstrate attainment above level 5.

How�can�Numberworks’nWords�help?�

The SATs assess children’s knowledge and understanding of aspects of the National Curriculum. NumberWorks’nWords derives programs from the National Curriculum to support work in the classroom, and ensures they can use the method each child find works best for them.

11+�Preparation�–�Advice

Every year the 11+ exam gets more competitive meaning extra help is needed to prepare for the assessment. Verbal Reasoning (VR) is one of the main areas tested in 11+ examinations and as this is not part of the National Curriculum then it is not taught in schools. That’s why it’s vital that pupils receive supplementary tuition in the VR strategies prior to taking the 11+ tests. The majority of successful pupils start this preparation in Year 4.

Families Pennines asked Erica White, Head of Kindergarten at oldham Hulme Grammar school, for advice on getting your child ready to start school this september.Starting school is an important milestone and the idea of being with other children and new adults can seem strange and daunting for many youngsters.

Some children will have played co-operatively with others, perhaps at a day nursery, whilst others may be more adult reliant. Whatever your child’s experience they need love, encouragement and support to make a smooth transition into the next phase of their life.

1. Being ‘grown up’Young children love to be told how ‘grown up’ they are and being independent at school helps them have confidence to try new things without first seeking help from an adult. Encourage independence at every opportunity and give plenty of praise - even for the smallest achievement, like putting on their own hat or opening their yoghurt themselves. Practice now will pay dividends in September – a child able to put on their coat and shoes without help has more time outside in the fresh air!

2. Going to the toiletChildren will be expected to use the toilet by themselves once they start school, so build your child’s confidence in order to avoid any accidents. Encourage your child to begin taking toilet trips without you. Let them practice how to wipe properly and remember that hand washing is also part of the ‘visit’. Get some fun hand-wash and encourage your child to sing a nursery rhyme whilst they wash to make the visit enjoyable and to make sure hands are washed long enough to be thoroughly clean.

3. sharing and being with other children Learning to take turns and share are important skills for a child to learn, and hitting, pinching, kicking or biting will not be tolerated by other children - or parents! Take every opportunity for your child to be in the company of other children.

Spend time in parks and play centres or with friends to help develop their social skills. Be clear and firm with the boundaries you set and always insist on good behaviour and praise your child for taking turns or sharing their toys.

4. Loving learningThough your child might read and write their name, count and say their colours, it is even better if they love to learn. Bringing learning to life so your child develops a naturally enquiring mind and explores every opportunity is one of the best head starts any child could have! So take an interest in everything around - visit local parks and talk about the plants and animals you see, count the ducks, read park signs together.

5. A good start... every dayGive yourself a head start and practise the morning routine and the school run. At Hulme learning starts as soon as children enter the classroom. Your child may be missing out on reading, writing and number activities that take place first thing in the morning if you are late. Encourage your child to lay their uniform out the night before. Have a structured bedtime routine that allows for a good night’s sleep. Have the table already set for a good, hearty breakfast and leave the house in plenty of time to allow for the rush of ‘school-run’ traffic.

6. settling in – the Hulme experienceAbove all, remember to have fun with your little one. Relax and enjoy spending time with them as they grow up all too soon. You can play a very

important part in the process of ‘going to school’. Whatever your own experience of school, you must send out a message that is loud and clear: starting school is exciting and something to look forward to. Your child will follow your lead so be calm and positive about the whole experience.

One final word of advice: try not to cry as you say goodbye to your child on their first day at school. You may want to, but seeing you upset will only make your child distressed. So, take a deep breath, wave goodbye with a smile on that first morning and save the tears until you are walking out through the playground. Your child will already be beginning to settle before you reach the school gate...

Tour de France Challenge at The Zone, Huddersfield.

Huddersfield Community Trust is launching its own Youth Gym TDF Challenge from 27 March-4 July 2014. Young people aged 8-16 years who use the facility based at The Zone, Huddersfield, will be invited to ride the spinning bikes in the gym over the 100 day countdown in an attempt to reach the 3656km target – the distance of the whole of the Tour de France.

And the instructors might be going to a primary or secondary school near you! They will be visiting a number of Kirklees schools to take the challenge into the community. The best results might ‘win’ Super League 2013 League Leaders, the Huddersfield Giants squad to visit your school and join your class mates in a lesson plus free yearly memberships at The Youth Gym at The Zone.

Youth Gym Instructor, Hannah Proctor, said, ‘We intend to have lots of fun and encourage some great competition between individuals and schools; we are keen to use this activity as a legacy to encourage more children to take on regular exercise and look after their bodies.’

Family sessions at Colne Valley Black Belt Academy are 45 minutes long and a real chance to get children and their parents working out together.

The classes are aimed at 4-16 year olds and their parents. Starting with a good warm up – perhaps a game of tig – then the participants are encouraged to move round and get into stance in pairs. Next are team runs to add a bit of competitive spirit and then into stretches to help prevent strains. Children and parents are partnered for ‘pad and mitt’ which basically allows kids to kick and punch mum or dad but in a nice way!! As the class progresses the families practice freestyle basic moves in lines following the teacher. And at the end there will be a fun game such as capture a clothes peg off competitors’ clothing.

1. Use bath time to introduce your child to water - with toys and songs – have a splashing time!

2. For your first visit to the pool, encourage a fun, relaxed feel, don’t expect too much from your child and allow them to develop at their own pace.

3. Encourage water play whilst they build their confidence, and only when ready, introduce basic skills, still using play.

4. Not confident in teaching your child to swim? Book a local course which can provide great ideas to practice with your child, with the support of a qualified teacher.

5. Children love to swim with their parents. Hold younger swimmers to maintain eye contact and swim (and dive!) with older children so they can see how you move through the water – and it’s fun!

6. Get into a routine, this helps them to feel settled and they’ll be happier to try new things which you gradually introduce.

7. It’s better to find the right time for your child to swim than try to force them to fit into a schedule which doesn’t suit them.

8. Children progress at their own pace, so don’t compare them with other children. Sometimes they don’t progress for a while and then suddenly come on in leaps and bounds in one session.

9. Encourage a strong leg kick and arm action, and repeat these core skills at each pool visit, for up to 7 minutes at a time, then rest and play. (Swimbabes has swimmers who are just 2 years old who can swim a width.)

10. Babies and young children love swimming and once confident will be drawn to the water – do be aware of the inherent dangers, and even for the most confident little swimmer, always be vigilant!

Swimbabes courses start with babies of 4 weeks of age (and recommend beginning lessons before your child is 18 months). Classes take place in warm, handpicked pools - including around Huddersfield, Halifax, Rochdale, Wakefield, Barnsley and Leeds. Courses are termly and bookable in advance.

Kirklees Light Railway invites families to Clayton West to meet the Easter Bunny and climb aboard the Easter Eggspress. Trains will be running every 40 minutes from 10am to 4pm during the Easter weekend (18-21 April).

Travel by steam train aboard the Easter Eggspress to Shelley to meet the Easter Bunny who has dropped all of his food in the play ground and needs everyone to help him collect it! He has also hidden some extra special Golden Eggs around the play ground too and everyone who helps collect his food in the Egg Hunt will receive a chocolate egg and there might be a bigger reward if you find a Golden Egg!

Families Pennines asked The Star Tree Studio in Littleborough for top tips on what can be a really tricky make – egg decorating!

Yes - It’s that time of year when you are given the task of helping your child create a decorated egg for nursery or school!

Here at The star Tree studio we’ve come up with three easy ideas to suit all ages.

1. Decoupage Egg – create a beautiful on trend egg using gorgeous patterned decoupage papers; pick a stylish colour theme or an eclectic mix.

2. super Hero Egg – paint your egg, we used paint pens and then markers to draw the face. You could use googly eyes if you prefer. Wrap a pipe cleaner around to make arms/legs. Glue a piece of tissue paper on the back for the cape.

3. Easter Lamb – glue a thin layer of cotton wool over most of the egg. Next make lots of tiny cotton wool balls and glue these on top, leave a space for the face. Draw the face using black marker. Make a ‘stand’ by bending a pipe cleaner into an oval and then cut another pipe cleaner in half, wrap one half around the oval to create the front legs and do the same for the back. Sit your lamb on top.

Here are some events from RSPB Old Moor, just off the M1 near Barnsley. For Easter holiday events see our Easter Feature.

nature and nebulas II - Celebrating national Astronomy Week

Join the team at Old Moor and Mexborough and Swinton Astronomical Society for an evening of natural spectacle. Go on a guided walk to see birds come home to roost followed by stargazing at the night sky plus a planetarium display in the visitor centre. In the cafe, watch new footage of earth from the International Space Station while you warm up with soup and hot drinks.

£5 Adults, £4 RSPB Members, £3 children (under 5’s go free). All proceeds go to support the work of the two charities.

Gifts for Mothers Day

Make cards and gifts for Mothers Day with a nature theme in the activity centre. While the paint is drying why not go for a stroll around the reserve to see Spring blooming in all its glory.

£3 per child including materials and reserve entry fee. Adult reserve entry fee £4. Family ticket £8 plus £1 per child to cover materials.

Old Moor welcomes you to nature’s opera. Enjoy the thrill of an early start and mind-blowing sound of a dawn chorus at this time of year before heading to the Old Moor café for a well-earned breakfast. Suitable for adults and older children. There are two walks available :

Short walk 4.30 to 7.00

Long walk 4.30 to 7.30

Followed by breakfast in the cafe.

Booking essential - £10 non members, £6 RSPB members. Cost includes walk, breakfast bap and hot drink.

Most of the events are free except where indicated, but the reserve entry fee applies: £4 adults, £2 children, £8 family ticket. Activity backpacks are available to hire. Kirklees Light railway with Thomas and friends

A very special event coming up in March plus see our Easter feature for information on KLRs Easter Eggspress!

Go along to Clayton West this Spring (15-16 March) for the first of several weekends planned in 2014 for Thomas and his friends to entertain your family. Thomas will be pulling the first train at 10:00am (this is the only train that Thomas pulls to Shelley) after he has returned from Shelley, Thomas will be at Clayton West providing platform rides for everyone to enjoy! With lots going on there is something for every little one including face painting, bouncy castles and donkey rides too!
