Scotland’s first urban nature kindergarten is now offering training courses for parents, childcare professions and teachers

Due to popular demand by head teachers and other early years professionals, Woodland Outdoor Kindergartens, are now offering the opportunity for like-minded individuals to come along to experience their nature kindergarten first-hand via a series of training courses and workshops. The courses are designed to allow individuals to gain an insight into outdoor and child-led learning and to demonstrate how numeracy and literacy can be successfully delivered in a woodland environment.....and more importantly how to encourage natural and stimulating play in children in the outdoors.

The unique Woodland Outdoor Kindergarten, based in Pollok Country Park, Glasgow was established in 2009 by close friends and mums of young children, Alison Latta and Debbie Simmers. The kindergarten is a renowned and highly commended nature kindergarten providing pre-school care and education to over 70 children in partnership with Glasgow City Council.

Alison and Debbie, alongside their manager, Hilary Long, are now throwing open their proverbial doors and have now developed a training day and series of hands-on workshops to allow others to share their practice, vision and aims. ‘We have learned a vast amount

over the last few years and are keen to pass on the passion, knowledge and understanding that our team have developed to our fellow professionals’. Delegates have provided exceptional feedback on the training ‘The quality was outstanding – could only be experienced by actually being there’.

The nature kindergarten concept is growing in popularity across Scotland as we increase our understanding of the benefits that this type of education offers our children. Research shows that children learning in this environment tend to adopt a more healthy and active lifestyle, are prone to less infection and show increased self-confidence and resilience. They also demonstrate excellent practical problem-solving, risk-assessing and co-operation skills.

Details of the opportunities available can be found online at www.woodlandoutdoor kindergartens.com/training

MONKEY Music, the award winning pre-school music group for children aged 3 months – 4 years across the UK, is delighted to announce that it is expanding its classes in Westerton and from Monday 21 October will be holding classes at Westerton Fairlie Memorial Hall on a Monday morning.

Monkey Music, which was founded in 1993, aims to introduce music to very young children in a way they can easily understand and enjoy, nurturing a child’s natural love of music so that it will last a lifetime. Specialist teachers, many of whom are professional musicians and parents themselves, gently encourage social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment. Experienced with young children, their classes are carefully structured to encourage learning and freedom of expression, and children are grouped in small classes according to their age.

Unique to Monkey Music is their newest curriculum which has been specially written for babies from 3 months in response to huge demand from parents, who are increasingly aware of the importance of introducing their children to music from as young an age as possible. Called “Rock‘n’Roll”, each class is themed around the everyday life of a very young child and is a special time in the week for parents and carers to simply stop, look at each other and enjoy the sensory experience of sound together.

Monkey Music classes have been running in Bearsden, Milngavie, Bishopbriggs and Lenzie for the last 18 months and is now excited to be opening in Westerton. “We are delighted at the way that Monkey Music has taken off in Glasgow,” said Fiona who runs the classes along with Máire“ and feel sure that our new classes in Westerton Fairlie Memorial will prove to be equally as popular. The growing demand for Monkey Music is proof of our success, and we look forward to opening our doors to many more little monkeys soon”.

Drama

LISA who runs Pyjama Drama in Glasgow is passionate about using drama to help develop young children’s imaginations and confidence and to help parents and Early Years settings to do the same. She explains “In Pyjama Drama we take children on an imaginary journey and encourage the children to take the lead. It is a creative play experience using music and movement where the children’s imagination takes centre stage.“

For the past couple of years Pyjama Drama has been running sessions at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Carolyn Foran, Curator says “The session themes are chosen to relate to the museum collections, and have included ‘Pirates’ and the ‘Rainforest’. Lisa cleverly manages to take the children on a journey to an imaginary world through fun drama activities. These have proved extremely popular with our younger visitors and their parents.”

On Sat 28th Dec at 10.30am and 11.30am Pyjama Drama will be running a special session ‘Rudolf the Purple Nosed Reindeer’ at the museum. To book a place, please call 0141 276 9505 (select option 2 ‘bookings’)

Looking ahead to next year Lisa says “Our Friday morning classes at Hillhead Library have proved really popular and 2014 is going to be an exciting year for Pyjama Drama as the Glasgow team expands so that more children can enjoy the benefits of Pyjama Drama”

To enquire about Pyjama Drama’s special Christmas sessions on Saturday December 14th at Hillhead Library, classes, parties or visits to nurseries and schools email [email protected] Also visit www.pyjamadrama.com and www.facebook.com/pyjamadramaglasgow

channel of the company. Rosie says “I have been using NYR Organic products

for some years and I was so delighted that I found myself talking about them with my friends. Women do that. We share what we’re passionate about, what’s important to us, with others. We talk about our health and our families. It’s very natural.”

“Before I knew it, I had started a business, but a flexible business that fits around my family. I see NYR Organic as a vehicle to help people bless their families, both with healthy organic products and financially through the business opportunity.

Rosie is busy with events around the Glasgow area where you can learn more, sample & smell such as Mother & Toddler groups, School PTA events, Xmas shopping nights or skin care workshops at home.

STAFF at The High School aim to ensure a very positive and varied learning experience for pupils of all ages,

including the use of ICT resources and interactive whiteboards.

In addition to the excellent academic performances of all our pupils, we want them to enjoy an all-round education in which Art, Drama, Music, Sport and all our extra-curricular activities play a vital part. We offer a wide range of Clubs and Societies at the Junior and Senior Schools, and participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is very popular. All our staff take a close interest in our children’s welfare, and we also have a well-developed House system. Junior and Senior pupils commit themselves to supporting different charities during the session, and many senior pupils are involved in community service.

Our Junior School operates a very successful Out of School Care Club until 6pm daily and

during holiday periods. Our main entry points are at Kindergarten

and Junior 1 (Junior School), and Transitus (=P7) and Senior 1 (Senior School), but we welcome applications for entry to any year group from Kindergarten to Senior 6.

Interviews for Kindergarten and Junior 1, and Entrance Tests for Junior 2 to Senior 4 are

held in January. Interviews for Senior 5 and 6 take place at a mutually convenient time.

The High School has a Bursary Fund to enable pupils to attend the Senior School who would not otherwise be able to do so. The value of each award depends on financial need, and bursaries are awarded mainly on academic merit.

Please come to our Junior School Open Morning on Monday 28 October (9.30am-12 noon) and our Senior School Open Evening on Monday 11 November 2013 at 7pm.

On the 7th of July, a party of pupils and staff from Belmont House school embarked on a 36-hour journey to Zambia at the start of a two-week long expedition. The purpose of the trip was to volunteer in the poverty stricken community of Mwandi and to aid the village by building traditional mud houses for homeless families.

Katie, one of the students participating in the trip said, “On arriving in Zambia we were honestly astounded by not only the huge disparity in living standards between Zambia and home but also by the friendliness of the Zambian people.

We travelled to Mwandi on the 9th, and received a warm welcome from the village, particularly from the children.

The work was very strenuous but it was fun, due to the environment we were building in. There was always music playing and we spent time with the children. They loved playing football with the boys! We knew we had to work hard to get the work allocated to us finished. Handing over the keys to the families who were moving in was easily the best moment of the whole trip.

We finished our work ahead of schedule and so we were able to help complete another house that a previous group had not been able to finish.

Before coming home we travelled to Botswana and undertook a safari tour which was an amazing experience and we also had opportunity to visit the breathtaking Victoria Falls”.

Principal Melvyn Shanks commented, “As a School we are very proud indeed of our young people for undertaking this trip and I am grateful to Lindsay Millar, our Head of Languages, who accompanied the group. They worked very hard to both raise the funds to pay for their own expenses but also raised a very significant amount of money to directly aid the village”.

EVER wondered what to get a one-year-old boy now you’ve got teenagers, or your pre-teen god-daughter when your kids are still happy with Stickle Bricks? Here at Families we’ve got over 50 children between us, so we’ve got together to make a list of the toys that our children have really loved and played with to help you get a winning present this year.

BabiesYou’ve heard it before, but it’s not worth

spending a lot. How about a donation to a savings account and something small like stacking cups, soft toys (Jellycat have some gorgeous ones), fabric books or a new rattle? If you want to spend a bit more, try a play gym or door bouncer, musical toys or something from VTech with lots of flashing lights and noises!

Toddlers By now toys are getting more exciting, and

sometimes quite large. One of the favourite toys for this age group is a Little Tikes Cosy Coupe – played with for years, even when they’re almost too big to get out of it! You can often get these in quite good condition secondhand, too.

Just as big, and as popular, is a toy kitchen complete with plastic fruit and veg that they can cut up and serve to mum and dad for tea. The HappyLand range from ELC (www.elc.co.uk) is great for this age group – choose from a rocket set, train set, pirate ship, fairy treehouse or the very sweet Rose Cottage. And again anything musical is also sure to be popular. Or try colouring (mess free with Aqua Draw) and sticker books (Usborne First Sticker Books series, www.usbornebooksathome.co.uk for lots and lots of stickers).

Preschool girlsAt this age a lot of little

girls are crazy about dolls – try a soft rag doll like Bigjigs or the Manhattan range, where you can also buy outfits and accessories. Or how about a dolls’ pram or buggy? ELC has a good selection. Peppa Pig is perennially popular – choose from playsets, puzzles, books, dvds and much more. The Disney Princesses are also sure to be a hit – dolls, dressing-up sets, playsets or stationery (www.disneystore.co.uk). My Little Pony has also stood the test of time.

Preschool boysFavourites that seem to be played with for

a long time are dressing-up outfits (doctor, fireman, cowboy and pirate) and role-play kits like a doctor’s case or a workbench with lots of nails to hammer down. Thomas the Tank Engine and Brio trainsets are loved by some little boys, and it’s often easy to find them in good condition on ebay. Dinosaurs are loved by all – ELC have some plastic models of all sizes, or try www.nhmshop.co.uk/dinosaurs. Or how about some pop-up tents and tunnels for getting rid of energy? Duplo is also a good bet, choose from basic bricks or themed sets like a fire station, zoo or farm.

Girls 5–8By now imaginative play has really kicked

off – forever popular and loved by many are Sylvanians, choose from families, playsets or a vast array of houses to put them in. Lego Friends is also a good bet. Playmobil has a big range to choose from – farms, fairies, hospitals and more – you might just want to consider constructing it beforehand to avoid lots of time spent fiddling around with small bits on Christmas Day. Craft kits are also popular with this age group, try Hama Beads, ELC for complete, easy-to-follow kits for decorating mermaids, jewellery boxes etc and Yellow Moon (www.yellowmoon.org.uk). And don’t forget Barbie and Build-a-Bear (local stores in High Wycombe, Uxbridge, Milton Keynes, Reading or visit www.buildabear.co.uk).

Boys 5–8Lego, lego and more lego, in all its various forms –

bricks and wheels, Lego City, Harry Potter, The Hobbit and Star Wars – is always popular and played with for years. And Playmobil again – pirates, knights, vehicles and more to appeal to every interest. Or how about a wooden fort, garage, fire station or workbench – Pintoy make some lovely ones. Construction toys of all shapes and sizes – Geomags panels and magnets, wooden bricks and blocks – are also popular. Or try Hot Wheels, Transformers, a marble run or Scalextric.

Girls 9–11While still happy to play with toys, by now

girls often love something which makes them feel grown-up – try pretty slippers, little bags, jewellery, scarves, picture frames or a gift card from Claire’s Accessories. DIY baking sets made up of fairy-cake cases, sprinkles, icing tubes, cutters, apron and a book all put in a pretty tin make a lovely gift. Crafts are still popular – the Klutz range is easily available and a bit more unusual. Or how about Harumika (www.harumika.eu), you dress mannequins in different outfits using bits of material and can upload the creations online. Scrap-booking is often also popular, you could include a voucher for a local class. And of course no matter how many pens, pencils and notepads they have, stationery is always a winner!

Boys 9–11If they’re into sports, it’s easy – kit, clothes,

books, dvds on their favourite team or a moment in sporting history are all likely to go down well. Or how about a football goal, kite, skateboards, or cool clothes to protect elbows etc. Also worth a look are Ripstyle waveboards, which come in a variety of styles and colours www.waveboardsale.com/collections/ ripstyle-boards). If they’re musical, a drum kit or guitar (do check with the parents first). Or how about kits to make something (Letterbox have a good selection, or try www.sciencemuseum.org.uk). And if they’re into the current obsession of computer game Minecraft, Amazon has a good range of toys to complement it like a torch, collectable figures and a Lego game.

All they want for Christmas…

christmas all wrapped up

Older kidsIt might be a case of clubbing together for a

high-ticket item like a new bike, but no matter how old you are you still need something to play with on Christmas Day. How about something fun like a hula hoop – you can’t be a grumpy teenager when you’re hooping and there are lots of tutorials on You Tube to learn some cool tricks. Or how about an e-reader, you could always add some of their favourite ebooks – for reluctant readers the novelty factor might just work. And if all else fails, there’s always an iTunes voucher; which leads us to Apple. There’s no denying it an iPod, iTouch or iPad often feature on most kids’ Christmas lists. Maybe they should come with a warning from Santa – to prevent self-destruction, only use for an hour a day when your parents say it’s ok.

Games we all love

Tell the Time, Bus Stop, and Tummy Ache.

For children of about 7 or 8 and over, why not try Rummikub – a little bit like Scrabble but with numbers, it’s for dyslexic children but not a specific SEN game.

For 10+ yrs, how about Balderdash; you get obscure words and if you guess the real definition you get points.

A unique personal gift from Scottish artist LIsa Petterson - for Christmas or any other special occassion!

Talented scottish artist Lisa Pettersson is taking commissions for children’s portraits. They make a great and unique Christmas gift and commissioning is easy!

‘The customer emails me one or more photographs they like of their child/children, and I use them to work from, painting in acrylic black and white ‘pop-art style’ on paper. Many of those who have commissioned in the past have been grandmothers… The customer chooses a colour for the paper that I paint on. When I’m done I email a photo of the piece to the customer and presuming they are happy I get the painting professionally mounted and send it. The customer only pays when they have received the painting.’

Take a look at Lisa’s website if you want to see some samples of her work: www.lisapettersson.com, or email her straight away with your pictures or questions [email protected]

Prices start from £90 for a 30x40cm painting, including a white mount, but she has done these in big poster sizes too. There is nothing like having original art on your walls, and one of your children is a memory to treasure forever.

Perennial favouriteEveryone who has one says that a trampoline really is the best thing they’ve ever bought. Buy the biggest your garden can accommodate and make sure you’ve got a safety net. Try Just Outdoor Toys, www.justoutdoortoys.co.uk or John Lewis www.johnlewis.co.uk.

And some ideas from local Glasgow businesses...

Capture a precious moment with Smallprint – an extra special gift for Christmas

Mother-of-two, Amanda Weir, offers the opportunity to capture a precious moment in time with a unique item of jewellery hand crafted in fine silver. Amanda owns a Smallprint franchise, which specialises in the production of handcrafted jewellery that captures a fingerprint in polished silver.

Looking for an unusual idea for Christmas? Look no further! Amanda can create charms, pendants, dog tags, cuff links, keyrings and bookmarks with a difference. The jewellery is made out of a substance called precious metal clay (PMC) which allows a fingerprint to be taken on a shaped piece of clay then fired in a kiln to form solid silver. Each item is finished with solid silver settings and comes beautifully packaged.

As well as fingerprints, Smallprint can also capture handprints, footprints, drawings and handwriting in silver, allowing you to cherish each and every milestone.

Bookings can be made for private one-to-one sessions, small parties or larger groups. For Christmas gifts, please ensure that you order early to guarantee delivery in time for Christmas. View the full range at www.smallprint.com or contact Amanda on 07814-160064

Peter Panto and the Incredible StinkerbellAll children grow up – except one. Peter. You

see he’s not like the others. He can fly. He has a sworn enemy in the evil Captain New Look, who has one hand and one cheesy-pineapple-on a stick for the other. Peter also has a best friend, Stinkerbell. She’s a fairy but she’s no fool. She’s got magic flatulence and powerful rifts that she’s willing to turn on full force to any girl that comes between her and her love Peter.

Enter Wendy. Wet West End Wendy. She’s falling for Peter, but Stinkerbell would rather she fell off a cliff.

Will Stinkerbell get her man? Will Captain New Look swap his hook for a Dyson attachment? And how will we manage to fly anyone when there’s no flying rig? Find out in this year’s Tron panto!FOR AGES 6YRS+

bother her or make her fretful. She forgets to brush her teeth just before bed, to tidy her toys or to remember anything her mum and dad said! She ties knots in her ribbons and in pieces of string, but it doesn’t really help her remember a thing. Flora looks in her pocket and what does she find? Her letter to Santa all sealed and signed. She’s forgotten to post it. She didn’t remember! What will happen on the 25th of December? Join Flora on a snowy night and help her try to put things right. Platypus in Boots A new, interactive musical adventure for 3

to 5 year olds, Platypus in Boots is created by writer and theatre-maker Martin O’Connor, and Rachel Drury, creator and composer of our ground-breaking shows for babies and toddlers – BabyOand SensoryO.

Sydney the Platypus has travelled all the way from Australia to visit Glasgow and see snow for the first time. But it’s not easy being a tourist, especially when you look a little different and can’t understand the local lingo. All in all he’s a bit of a fish out of water, in desperate need of some friends. Come and help him find his way around the city and make his holiday one to remember!

A fun-filled mix of music, comedy and puppets, Platypus in Boots is based on the misunderstandings that can come from words – but is ultimately a celebration of differences. With a host of Glasgow characters, snowball fights and a Brussels Sprout Von Trapp sing-along, it’s Christmas fun, but not quite as we know it…
