Ultra-fine Merino Base layers

The Benefits of WoolWool is one of the most amazing fibers on earth. It’s a renewable fiber created by mammals like sheep, goats, llamas, and rabbits. These animals use their wool to regulate their body temperature.

How does wool accomplish this amazing feat? For starters wool fibers are actually hollow; allowing wool to absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture vapor without becoming clammy. That’s because wool fibers wick away mois-ture and release it into the air.

Wool fibers also have the advantage of being crimped instead of being smooth and straight. This allows tiny air pockets to form that retain heat and act as an insulating layer in cold temperatures.

Yet wool fibers have a hard outer layer that protect against incoming moisture and dirt. This hard outer layer also prevents odor from being absorbed into the fibers; something that makes wool garments odor-resistant (an advan-tage over it’s synthetic competition!).

Wool fabrics are also incredibly durable. For instance, wool fibers can bend back on themselves 20,000 times be-fore breaking. (For comparison, cotton breaks after 3,200 bends and rayon after just 75.)

Fabrics and yarns made from wool allow humans to take advantage of wool’s amazing properties.

Merino wool is a type of wool fiber. It’s like normal wool on steroids.

Merino wool comes from just one source: merino sheep. These sheep were originally bred in the Castille region in central Spain, although today the vast majority of merino sheep are found in Australia and New Zealand. Evolution and selective breeding in merino sheep have produced two main effects: One, the wool on the animal never stops growing (therefore they must be sheared on a regular basis to prevent health issues.); Two, merino sheep produce a super-fine wool fiber. The smaller the diameter, the finer, softer, and less scratchy the fabric will be.

Super-fine wool fibers produce a fabric that is not only softer, but also more elastic, and even more durable than standard wool. It also offers superior breathability, temperature regulation, and moisture and odor control. That’s why Merino is considered a super-wool.
