“It was a surreal experience to be in the presence of this man. I was truly blessed to be given this opportunity and hope that everyone gets the chance that I had,” said Gabrielle. “It was amazing how many people we encountered that were there for the Pope! The first day, there was the speech at Independence Mall, and my mom had actually surprised me and had gotten tickets to be in the front area of the crowd, instead of being in the back and watching from the street! We sat next to a family who had brought their two-week old child to see the Pope!” she continued.

“Also, on that same day,” Gabrielle said, “we walked over 20 miles to get to certain spots to even see a glimpse of the Pope and I absolutely believe that it was worth the sore feeling afterwards. The second day was the Mass and we watched that on the Jumbotron…There’s a great feeling that comes

with going to Mass outside with a million people surrounding you, praying the exact same prayers, and sharing the faith you have.”

“Seeing Pope Francis has definitely made my faith stronger than it’s ever been. He’s a humble person whom I genuinely admire and the fact that I saw him in person is the greatest feeling,” Gabrielle said. “I spent a weekend talking to people I had never met before, sharing experiences that I didn’t think that I would ever have, and growing in my faith, which is a lot to get from a little trip to Philadelphia.”

While Gabrielle concluded, “Thank you so much for letting me share my story!” it’s we who are thankful that she was able to share this experience with us!

Business Department Speaker Series

The Business Department, under the direction of Maria Illig, again sponsored the annual

speakers’ series, bringing in people from various fields to speak to the students at Bishop Ready. While sponsored by the Business Department, students from other classes are invited to attend.

This year’s speakers were Michelle Churchill, MPS Clinical Sales Specialist, BioMarin; Michael J. Logozzo, MBA, General Manager, BMW Financial Services Regional Services Center; and Richard Weiner, Sergeant, Columbus Police Force, and Ready alum (’88).

Each speaker brought something different to the occasion, each spoke passionately about her/his chosen field, and each gave an account of what is needed, from both an educational standpoint and a personal commitment standpoint, to achieve success. While blending science/community outreach and business, each speaker gave students a taste of the skills needed to achieve success in any given field.

Being prepared, being engaged, being committed, and being willing to change, were some of the areas covered in the series.

Students left these lectures with a new understanding of what it takes to thrive and flourish in today’s (and tomorrow’s) professional world. Whatever the area of interest, the guideposts are the same…for a successful career and a successful life!

Technology Competition: MOVEMEnTTHIS YEAR’S TECHNOLOGY COMPETITION CENTERED ON MECHANICAL, HUMAN, AND ANIMAL MOVEMENT. A total of 39 students from five Ready partner/feeder schools participated and while the title remains “technology competition,” as Ready faculty member and competition coordinator George Pritchard explains, it is really more a “participation activity,” and has been for several years.

This year’s activities were judged on teamwork, selected product, appeal of the product, quality and number of entries made in the team journal, time from start to finish, position and manner of the team identification on each product.

Among the directions were “Make four thaumatropes (a 19th century toy, using the principle of persistence of vision)… Make two phenakistoscopes (an early animation device that uses the persistence of vision principle to create an illusion of motion)…make the sound of the member’s favorite animal…make a flip book…and make one large kinetic art piece with at least one moving part for each member.”

The schools that participated are Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Brendan the Navigator, St. Cecilia, St. Mary Magdalene, and St. Patrick/London. Among the Ready students who helped during the activities were seniors Noah Cunningham, Frances Reategui, and Claire Sapp and sophomores Alexis Cramer and Haley Bush. Faculty members Jen Donaldson, Barb Stoll, and April Wilburn were also involved with the event. And, behind the scenes, facilities director Will George helped pull it all together. A special ‘thank you’ goes to Whole Foods, which made a donation of materials.

The instructions given in preparation for the event included a recommendation that team members should investigate and perhaps make some mechanical designs of various sizes, shapes, and configurations, either realistic or fantastic; team members should have an appreciation for human movement involved in skipping, running, jumping, dancing, spinning, etc.; and a suggestion that each team member think in terms of her or his favorite animal and its movement in leaping, rolling, hopping, swaying, climbing, etc.

At the end of the competition, three teams are “placed,” based on the events completed and the journal entries made by the teams. This year’s ranking is: First…St. Brendan, Team II, designated Cyan Team: Max Greene, Grace Orians, Ethan Redelberger, and Grace Vulic…

Third…St. Mary Magdalene, Team II, designated Orange Team: Eric Altuzar, Qari

Austin, Abby Conturo, and Mario LopezThe competition was, once again, deemed a

success, with the enthusiastic participation of the grade school students and the interest and support of our partner/feeder schools’ principals and faculty. The Ready participants enjoy the zeal and energy of the students and, while learning and sharing, a good time is had by all!

The Ready Band: Preparing for “Dotting the i”

Not one but two Ready alums who were in the Ready band are now members of the OSU

Marching Band. Brothers Cory ’11 and Cody ’15 Faist both play the sousaphone in the band and this year have travelled to London, played at a Bengals game in Cincinnati, and Cory realized his dream: twice he got to “dot the i” in Script Ohio during the football season.

As Cory said, “I honestly still can’t believe that this is finally happening, especially considering how drastic the size difference is between The Ohio State University Marching Band (225 members) and the Bishop Ready High School Marching Band (27 members at its largest while I was at Ready). I believe that what helped me the most to get where I am today was the drive and thirst for personal excellence instilled in me by the teachers and staff at Ready. It doesn’t matter,” he continued, “where my personal excellence is, as long as I give my best effort. For this lesson, I will be eternally grateful for Bishop Ready High School.”

At the homecoming game on October 10 Rachel Neff and Nick Durbin were crowned Queen

and King, respectively. Both Rachel and Nick are graduates of Our Lady of Perpetual Help elementary school and are members of that parish.

Rachel is an Honor Roll student and recipient of the Shannon Whyte Scholarship. She has been a member of the varsity basketball and soccer teams for all four years at Ready and has been named to the Second Team/All CCL for basketball and All CCL and Central District in soccer. She

has been captain of the soccer team for two years and has been voted Most Valuable Player on the team. She is a member of the Castle Crew, Chinese Club, Environmental Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Multicultural Club, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and Sign Language Club and was a Crew Leader for Vacation Bible School. Rachel also served on Student Council her junior year. She plans to attend college and major in computer science and engineering with a minor in international business.

Nick is an Honor Roll student, a Ready Ambassador, and a four-year member of Student Council and has served on the Council’s Executive Leadership Board for three years. A member of the football team for all four years at Ready, Nick was also a member of the school’s

basketball team his freshman and sophomore years. He is a member of the Castle Crew, Chinese Club, Environmental Club, and Future Business Leaders of America. He is involved with the Ready Campus Ministry Program and theatre, having appeared in dual roles as Jacob and Potiphar in the production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Nick is proud to claim as “siblings” the three Chinese students who are living with his family while they attend Bishop Ready. He plans to attend the University of Cincinnati and major in political science.

Ready Students Serve as Ambassadors In Multicultural Summer Experience

Thirteen Ready students participated in a 12-day multicultural experience over the summer,

focusing on interacting with a group of Chinese middle school students who were engaged in exploring the American experience.

The pictures tell the story as seven seniors and six sophomores took part in activities sponsored by IPERC, an educational exchange organization located in Dublin, OH, that promotes cultural exchange and immersion throughout the United States and China. Many of Ready’s Chinese students were made aware of Bishop Ready High School through IPERC.

From visits to the Ohio State House to a tour of OSU, sports, a dance party, and family activities included, the Chinese students received an idea of life in the States and our students were able to better understand both the cultural differences and

similarities that are found when interacting with students from half a world away.

The itinerary included overnight trips to Niagara Falls, Washington, D.C., Princeton University,

Philadelphia, and New York City. Closer to home, the students enjoyed a day at Cedar Point, a trip to the Dayton Air Force Museum, and a Robotics Competition.

There were also short-term classes in math, science, English, and art, among others, with an awards ceremony held before the “away” trips began.

Ready students who participated as Ambassadors were seniors Kathleen Colvin, Abby Ellis, Emily Genders, Bayleigh Green, Claire Sapp, Ryann Scarberry, and Henry Tokar and sophomores Mary Benedetto, Jaide Lehnert, Morgan Ritterbeck, Payton Ritterbeck, Hannah C. Williams, and Hannah M. Williams. These students gained valuable experience in leadership roles and gained further practical knowledge that re-enforced for them that personal experience can enable peoples of different cultures to appreciate and celebrate any differences.

From a kick-off and signup events, a tailgate with Ready students at a football game, a fall classic, and a service evening that included

creating blankets for area homeless shelters and home-made ornaments and decorations for Christmas, the Castle Crew experience continues to engage students in grades 4 through 8, giving them a sampling of life at Bishop Ready and an example of what it means to be a part of the Ready Family. Current membership is fairly evenly divided between girls and boys.

With a membership of over 75 representing Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Brendan, St. Cecilia, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Patrick/London, Trinity, Columbus Preparatory, Hilliard Middle, and Columbus Fitness & Preparatory, the Crew continues to grow and provide a safe and caring environment for students where they are able to have fun and contribute to the larger society.

The Fall Classic included a pie-eating contest, classroom trick-or-treats, a mummy dressing contest, pumpkin painting, and a costume contest. Approximately 50 Ready students participate in Castle Crew events and can speak from personal experience about the transition to high school and the opportunities that Castle Crew offers to these students. Many of the Ready students involved in Castle Crew attended the same grade schools that Crew members now attend.

Upcoming events include WinterFest, A Girls’ Basketball Night, In-the-Know Academic Challenge, Spiritual Retreat, and “Knight Games.”

Membership is open throughout the year. For more information, contact Dan DeCrane at 614-276-5263, ext. 231, or e-mail [email protected]. A complete calendar of events and registration form may be found on the Ready website: brhs.org under Quick Clicks.

Sophomores Spearhead “Bear necessities” Project

Sometimes we forget that young people can be homeless, too. Ready’s sophomore class not

only doesn’t forget, they do something to help teens in that situation. As part of their sophomore retreat, class members participate in the Bear Necessities Project, collecting “mobile packs” for distribution through Star House, part of OSU, which helps homeless youth between the ages of 14 and 24, not only with basic needs like a meal and a place to shower and wash their clothes, but also tries to connect them to housing, employment opportunities, education, and mental health or substance abuse therapy.

This is Ready’s fifth year of participation in Bear Necessities. While the entire school gets involved, it is the sophomore class that facilitates the drive, handling promotion of the project, daily collections, and the sorting of items.

This year’s retreat, held in November at the Run the Race Center, was moderated by Angela Lariviere, Youth Empowerment Program Director, and Rachel Muha, Director of the Run the Race Center. During the retreat, students assembled 200 mobile packs, 100 each of food and toiletries.

As Deborah DelPrince, Theology faculty member and part of the Ready Campus Ministry Program, explained, “While individual student contributions are at the heart of the Bear Necessities Drive, many clubs join efforts to increase the overall

results. The St. Vincent de Paul Chapter sold ice cream floats during Spirit Week; Mr. Pritchard’s senior theology classes had several spontaneous collections. Anonymous donors, along with gifts from teachers and students, enabled the outreach to also include a separate purchase of new men’s and women’s fleece and multiple packages of under garments much needed at Star House.”

Prior to the retreat, Mrs. DelPrince and Mr. Will George, facilities manager, transported a truckload of donated supplies to Star House. According to Mrs. DelPrince, the shipment included items for the laundry room and pantry, as well as items for the bathrooms and for the recreation and office areas.

Special thanks goes to sophomore Colby Scorese and her Cheer Club for their extra efforts in contributing to this year’s success. According to Mrs. DelPrince, “This has proven to be the most successful collection to date!”

Senior Takes Top Honor at the Ohio State Fair

Senior Abigail Whitehead, daughter of Scott Whitehead (Ready ’88), has followed her passion

for horses and competitive riding since third grade. Her dedication was rewarded this summer at the Ohio State Fair when she took first place in the Intermediate Equitation Over Fences Class Ages 9-18. She and her horse, JT, have been together for about five years; this is Abby’s second year in 4-H but she has been riding since second grade. Last year, she placed second; this year, she reached the top!

Abby also competed in Low Working Hunter (placing fifth) and Equitation (placing ninth). Her dedication and work, spending as much time as she can at the barn in Ashville, where she also takes lessons, paid off—in a special way. Competing at the Fair itself is an accomplishment, but Abby competed in the Denny Hales Arena, which is named for her great uncle, making it just a little more “special.”

WHEn CODY CuLBERTSOn, READY ’10, TALKS FOOTBALL, PEOPLE LISTEn. WHEn HE PLAYS, PEOPLE WATCH.

As The Catholic Times noted in its September 9 issue: “When Cody Culbertson’s career

ends this fall, he might hold a record for the most football games played for Catholic schools in Columbus. From St. Cecilia School to Bishop Ready High School to Ohio Dominican University, Culbertson has been immersed in the sport for as long as he can remember….”

Cody brought his enthusiasm for football and his dedication to the Catholic faith and Catholic education to the podium as the guest speaker at this year’s Spirit Breakfast. Reminding the players why they play and encouraging them on, not only in the sport but also in life, Cody brought an energy and Silver Knight pride to the event.

As always, the Ready band and cheerleading squad led the assembled group of students and guests in a rousing send-off to the team.

Another fun part of Spirit Week is Twin Day and this year was no exception. From animals to current fan favorites, students demonstrated their creativity in executing outfits from the demur to the fantastic.

The homecoming game caps Spirit Week and this year the worthy opponent was Lima Central Catholic, who were defeated by the Silver Knights by a score of 28-14. In addition to the crowning of the homecoming queen and king (seniors Rachel Neff and Nicholas Durbin), this year brought a special treat: the return of two Ready alums who are currently members of “The Best…” Band in the Land: OSU’s marching band. Sousaphone players Cory ’11 and Cody ’15 Faist received a warm welcome upon their return to their alma mater.

This year’s homecoming game was played on Saturday night; on Friday, a rousing afternoon pep rally was held and included induction into the Ready Alumni/ae Hall of Fame of Hank Martensen ’65 and Andy Allison ’95, both of whom attended the game the following evening.

8Guidance Department update

Mrs. Gramlich,

Ready ’94, recently earned a Master of Science degree in Education and Health Sciences (subject area: School Counseling) from the University of Dayton. While she holds a new position, Mrs. Gramlich is very familiar with the workings of the Department, having previously served as Administrative Assistant. She is serving as School Counselor for the 9th and 10th grades.

The new Administrative Assistant/Attendance Officer is Elizabeth McQuade, Ready ’06. Mrs. McQuade is a graduate of Otterbein University who has experience in communications and has traveled throughout Europe as a member of “Celtic Legends,” a professional Irish dance troupe.

The Guidance Department is here to help our students in their career/college choices and for guidance as they navigate through their high school years. Be sure to check out the Guidance Department web page and monthly newsletter at brhs.org.

Fools Provides Laughs and Food for Thought…

A 24-hour deadline to cure a village of stupidity; a

beautiful young girl; a young schoolteacher under the deadline; and

a script by Neil Simon: Surely, the makings of a delightful respite from the hum-drum of everyday life…and just what the doctor ordered before the hectic Christmas season!

The Ready thespians, under the direction of Jill Larger, pulled off the comedy with impeccable timing. With ten students in named roles and an additional cast of 11 as townspeople, plus a stage crew of six, there were plenty of opportunities for Ready students to shine on stage and behind the scenes.

A round of applause, please for our cast: Senior Abigail Lowry (Mishkin); juniors Caitlyn Kelley (Sophia Zubritsky), Mary Beth Mogan (Slovitch), Olivia Rowe (Lena Zubritsky), Harrison VanTilburg (Snetsky), and Andrew Pindell (Leon Tolchinsky); sophomore Kyle Ferko (Gregor Yousekevitch); and freshmen John Pyles (Dr. Zubritsky), Angelica Rivera-Martinez (Yenchna), and Sandon Skuce (Magistrate) plus townspeople seniors Gabrielle Canare, Michael Creagh, Andrea Duarte, Nathan Koch, and Andrés Walliser-Wejebe; juniors Caitlin Armistead and Erin Sullivan; sophomores Olivia French and Marie Pece; and freshmen Claire Ferguson and Daniel Hamilton.

No play can be produced without a competent and flexible stage crew.

Kudos to seniors Benjamin Young (Student Director), Elina Aceveda, Steven Fu, and Claire Sapp and juniors Kyra Bailey and Ethan Gifford.

Special thanks to Jeff Neff for Lighting/Set Design, Rob Wahl for the playbill and website artwork, and Matt Goodman for photography.

Mark your calendars for the next Ready production, Agatha Christie’s thriller And Then There Were None, February 19-21. Check brhs.org for more information.

Basketball Clinic Emphasizes Fundamentals

Over 65 girls and boys in grades 3 through 8 attended the second

annual Silver Knights Fall Basketball Skills Clinic held over three days in late October. The program is designed to enhance individual skill development in preparation for the fall basketball season. In addition to Ready Coaches Joe Lang and Dan DeCrane, former and current Silver Knight players shared their ideas and experience and gave advice on how to become a great student athlete.

8 Putting theory into practice…

Advent Wreath Blessing Ceremony

The annual blessing of the advent wreath took place on December 1 and was

broadcast to all homerooms via the internal television system. The broadcast insures that everyone can see the ceremony and is followed by prayers in each homeroom. Gathered around the advent wreath are sophomore Natalee Patel, junior Kyra Bailey, Jane Kaiser (science faculty member and moderator of the St. Vincent de Paul Society), sophomore Bennett Waldo, and senior Claire Sapp.

Rosary Rally

Two coaches, 28 Silver Knight basketball

players, families and friends took part in the Sports Leader USA Rosary Rally on November 22, the feast of Christ the King. The Rosary Rally was hosted by St. Mary Magdalene parish and all CCL male basketball teams took part in the rally...Bishop Ready, DeSales, Bishop Hartley, St. Charles, and Bishop Watterson. In all, 175 young men and 75 parents and coaches participated. According to Dan DeCrane, Ready’s Head Boys’ Basketball Coach, this event “brought our entire league together to celebrate who we truly are: Christ’s disciples. It was a unique opportunity to pray, reflect, and meditate together before our fellow league members begin competition against

one another...The encouragement of personal and team prayer and spirituality is felt by all and we will continue to build off of our experience throughout the upcoming season.”

Operation Christmas Child

The Shoebox Project (Operation Christmas Child)

is sponsored by the Ready chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) and encourages individuals, clubs, and sports teams to “adopt” a shoebox and fill it with gift items and toys, as well as a note of encouragement, to be distributed through the Samaritan’s Purse to children in more than 150 countries and territories throughout the world.

This year, 22 shoeboxes were filled and forwarded for distribution.

Cross CountryNew head coach Troy Streacker, a former

assistant at St. Francis DeSales, oversaw a program that fielded five female runners (seniors Kathleen Colvin and Elin Voksepp, junior Katherine Perry, and sophomores Olivia French and Kelly Huber) and two male runners (senior Henry Tokar and freshman Grant Cordle). According to Coach Streacker, “The cross country team saw drastic improvements over the course of the year: With an average time drop of over two minutes from the first race to the last race of the season, almost every runner set new personal bests. The season was highlighted by the accomplishments of senior Kathleen Colvin. Kathleen was runner-up at the CCL meet and earned All District, All Region, Division III State Qualifier honors, and Academic All Ohio. The 2015 cross country season was a great success and many athletes are planning to bring their talents to the track in the spring.”

Kathleen Colvin ’16 was also recognized as an outstanding scholar-athlete in the first phase of Wendy’s High School Heisman Awards.

Girls’ Soccer“This year’s team improved to a successful

overall record of 9-8, after a 6-11-1 campaign last year. Although we finished last in the CCL, we achieved a higher seed in the tournament and played a two-day game (suspended because of darkness on the first day in second overtime) that we lost in penalty kicks,” said Coach Ben Au.

There were three graduating seniors on this year’s team: Delaney Cutteridge, Anne Mesewicz, and Rachel Neff, all four-year letter winners. Those three, plus sophomore Morgan Ritterbeck, were elected team captains by their teammates.

“We have a number of commendations on our team this year,” Coach Au said. “Sixteen of our players earned varsity letters, including seven first-time soccer letter awards.”Team Awards:
