Let me start off ourfirst newsletter of 2019 bysaying thankyou– toyou,the readers, to those thatsubmit content, and tomyfellow staff members thatwork diligently to makethe newsletter what it is.It’s a collaborative groupeffortandeachpartmovescohesively because ofanother. Inthepastfewmonthsalone, we have receivedmany thank you notes,via both mail and email,expressing appreciationfor the newsletter and itscontent. However, thecontent is what we depend on you for, readers, so pleasecontinuetosubmitanddon’tholdback. Late last year,BradPleimlingwrote in thanking regularnewslettersubmitterRichGlennieforhisarticleonworkinginthemill,whichraninourOctober,2018edition.“Iloveallofthearticlesyousendin,”saidPleimlingofGlennie.“Yourwritingisagifttous.” It was suggested that perhaps others, too, who haveworkedinthemillcouldtelltheirstories–whynot? SubmittedbyWardMerrillExecutiveDirectorofBackusCommunityCenter Formanyofus,oureducationbeganinthe“AB”Schoolwithkindergarteninthewestendofthebuilding.Thosetworooms, the“baywindow”room and the “fireplace”room,arestillthere.Thepainted animals on thestorage cabinets stillgreet visitors to the baywindow room; the smallbathroom with the tinytoilet is still there andthe little raised“stage” isin the nookwith the baywindow. The fireplace isstillthereintheroomnextdoor;coloredalphabetlettersdancealongthewalls;itsownlittletoiletandexitdoortotheplaygroundremain. Thebaywindowroomnowservesasstorageforauditoriumseats,fixtures from the thirdfloorofBackusandequipmentfor Ruby’s Pantry (amonthly food distribution program thatserves over 250 families eachmonth). The adjoining roomnowhousesaworkshopforourcommunitytheatretroupe,theBorealisBards.Setpiecesfrom“OZ”and“GreenGables”peeroutoftheshadows. WhiletheBackusbuildingnowburstswithactivityalmostsevendayseachweekastheBackusCommunityCenter,theABSchoolstillawaitsitsfuture. That “future” is actively being pursued by Citizens forBackus/ABandourpartneragency,KOOTASCACommunityAction.Thispartnershipgivesus thebestopportunitywe’veever had to bring theABbuildingback to life. In late 2016,leaders from each organization toured the building. IsaacMeyer, Community Development Director for KOOTASCA,immediatelysawitspotentialforhousing.ByJuly2017,bothboardsadopted joint resolutions towork towardssuccessfuldevelopmentoftheprojectwhichwouldlocateKOOTASCA’sservices and Head Start programs in the AB School anddevelopaffordableseniorhousingonfloors2and3. In August 2017, Backus/KOOTASCA invited 25+stakeholders to form the Koochiching County HousingCollaborativetodiscussandseeksolutionstohousingneeds.Stakeholders include: County HRA, Koochiching EconomicDevelopmentAuthority,ChamberofCommerce,KoochichingAgingOptions,Servants of Shelter, FriendsAgainst Abuse,Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency, KoochichingCounty Health and Human Services, and the cities of:InternationalFalls,Littlefork,BigFalls,Ranier,NorthomeandKoochiching County Board, in addition to KOOTASCA andBackus. KOOTASCAreachedouttotheMNHousingPartnership(MHP) which began six months of capacity building anddiscussionswithcollaborativestakeholders inOctober2017.Consensus was reached that an up-to-date, county-wide
tHe alexaNder BaKer SCHOOl – wHat lieS aHead?housingstudywasneeded.Withinsixweeks,over$22,000wascommittedbystakeholders including: two laborunions,financial institutions, PCA, Ruby’s Pantry, Voyage Forward,BethanyLutheranChurch,NorthlandFoundation,KOOTASCA,Backus and the Ridge Runner’s Snowmobile Club. MHP
provideda$10,000grantandCommunityPartnersResearch of Faribault,MNwashiredtoconductthe study. Final resultswere shared with thepublicduringmeetingsinNorthome, Littlefork andatBackusonJanuary16and17. The draft of thestudy includes therecommendation, “That
the Alexander Baker School conversion project should bepursued.”...“Theformerschoolbuildingisconducivetorentalunits.Therearepreliminaryplansfora16-unitprojectontheuppertwofloors,includingninetwo-bedroomandsevenone-bedroomunits.” The KOOTASCA/Backus partnership has secured atechnical assistance grant from the Minnesota HousingPartnership specific to the Alexander Baker Project. Theproject brings twomajor nonprofit organizations together todevelopthefirstmulti-unithousingprojectinover30years. In late November, Backus received a $10,000 MNHistorical andCultural grant to hire a qualified professionalarchitect toprepareaConditionsAssessmentof thehistoric1914 Alexander Baker School. The assessment will detailhowthebuilding’smanyhistoricfeatureswillbetreatedduringrehabilitation. Inaddition,theprojectbenefitswitha$5,000grantfromHenryandVirginiaSweattfromtheCharlesB.andMargaretL. Sweatt Family Fund of the Minneapolis Foundation.The project has the support of thePreservationAlliance ofMinnesotawhosestafftouredtheBackusandABbuildingsinJuly.TheOttoBremerTrustalsoseesvalueintheprojectandisconsideringagrantproposalfromCitizensforBackus.

Anideathatmaterializedafewyearsagohas finally come to fruition for a Falls HighSchoolalumnus. Andtheprojecthitsclosetohome. Rich Glennie, a 1966 graduate, recently
finished writing a nearly 200-page book about the Broncohockeyteam’s59-gamewinningstreak,whichtookplacefrom1964-66.Glennieappropriately titledhis book “TheStreak,”whichhas threemainparts:background information,game-by-gamerecapsandminifeaturestoriesoneachplayer. The idea for the book came out of two, 50-year classreunionsGlennieattended—hisownin2016andhisbrotherBrian’sin2015. “SinceIknewmostofthepeopleinbothclassesandgrewupwithmanyofthem,Iattendedbothreunions,”heexplained.“At both reunions, I began hearing stories from these oldBroncosabout theirplayingdays. I thought thestoriesweretoogoodtonotbewrittendownsomewhere.Iwasafraidthey’dbelostoncetheseoldBroncospassedon.SoIdecidedtodothewritingsinceIhaveabackgroundinjournalism.” However,Glennie never thought his ideawould endupbecomingabook.

He shoots, he scores - continued from page 6 “Ijustwantedtopreservethestoriesfortheguys,”hesaid.“Ireallywasn’tsurewhattodowithallthatmaterialuntilItalkedtoPeterFichukandBuzzyChristensen,botholdBroncosfromtheera,aswellasStuartNordquist,long-timeBroncofootballcoach,whocompliedanimpressivebookofstatisticsonalltheBroncossportsteams.” For two years, Glennie researched and interviewedBroncostopullthematerialtogether. “I made numerous trips to the Falls and sat for hoursscouring the old Journals (at the International Falls PublicLibrary)forinformationaboutthe59-gamewinningstreak,”hesaid.“Itwaslikeawalkbackintotime.Whatatreat.” Althoughhestartedoutwithamodestgoal—toresearchthe1965Broncoshockeyteam,whichmanyhockeyenthusiastsconsiderthegreatestcollectionofhighschoolhockeyplayersononeteaminthestate’shistory—hesaiditeventuallyturnedintomuchmore. “OnceIstartedtheinterviews,Irealizedtherewasanevenbetterstoryinthe59-gamewinningstreak,soIexpandedmyresearchtoincludenotonlytheplayersonthe1965team,butplayersonthe1964and1966teamsaswell,”hesaid. AfavoritepartoftheexperienceforGlennie?Interviewingthepastplayers.
“By far the most enjoyable part was the interviewingof theoldBroncos (mostbyphone),manyofwhom Ihad Inottalkedtoinmanyyears,”hesaid.“Theintriguingpartformeiswhatthesefellowsdidaftertheylefthighschool.Theiraccomplishments are impressive to say the least. And if ithad not been for hockey scholarships, someof these guysprobablywouldnothavebeenabletofurthertheireducationsandcareers.” Butmanyof theplayerswenton to teachothers,whichsurprisedGlennie.
“OnethingthatjumpedoutatmewashowmanyoftheseBroncos,aswellasothersbeforethisgroupandafter,wentintocoachingorcontinuedplayingthesport,”hesaid.“Manyalsobecameteachers,whichwasquiteimpressive.” Though his goal was to preserve a bit of the Broncoshockeyhistory,Glennie’sbookisalsoatributetotheplayerswhomadethewinningstreakhappen. “I’ve always been proud of being an International Fallsnative.WheneverImentionthattopeopletheygivemethat‘you-poor-thing’ look,” he said. “But growing up in the Fallsduring thaterawasa realblessing. Ihavenothingbut fondmemoriesoftheFalls,despitethebittercoldwintersofthoseyears.” GlenniesaidhishopeistoraiseenoughfundsfrombooksalestopaybacktheFallsinsomesmallway—bydonatingalltheproceedsfromthebooktotheFallsEducationFoundation/PurplePrideprogramtohelpotherFallsgraduates. “Onethemethatcameoutofall theinterviewswasthatthecommunitysupportinthoseyearswasvitaltothehockeyteam’ssuccess.Thathasn’tchanged,”headded.“Communitysupportisstillvital,whetherit’sforhockey,someothersportorpost-secondaryeducationopportunity.” His other goal for the bookwas to show futureBroncohockeyplayershowthosesuccessfulyearsinthe1950sand1960scameabout. “These old hockey greats discuss how they did it, andwhatittooktogetitaccomplished,”hesaid.“Mightlearnafewthingsfromtheseoldguys.” Butwilltherebemoretocome? “OnethingthatcamefrommyresearchofBroncohockeywasthediscoverythattherewereactuallytwolongunbeatenstreaksinBroncoshistory.Besidesthe1964-66streakofmybook,therewasanotherfrom1962-63.Thatisadifferentcastofcharacters,butjustasinteresting,”hesaid.“Thatmightbeanotherproject.” To purchase “The Streak,” contact Gordy Dault at218-286-2083orPeterFichukat218-286-5073.
