Inclement WeatherInclement weather is a tricky issue at the DACC. If school closes, the districtdoes not plow the road from the school down to the Center on a regular basis. So, if you are traveling to the DACC and school is closed, please chooseanother route.

Because we care about the safety of our members and our staff, it is sometimesnecessary to close early or open late. These unscheduled closures will beposted on our website and on Facebook. There will also be a message on our phone.

Morning Fitness Classes (classes beginning before Noon) will be cancelled ifschool is cancelled. If there is a two-hour delay, regular classes will begin withthe 10:00 am, regularly-scheduled classes.

If in doubt, please call the DACC at 570-275-3001.

The Skills’ Test to exit swim lessons, and begin a lifetime of swimming for exercise and enjoyment, is the following:

• Enter deep water fully clothed (bathing suit, shorts, T-shirt, and sneakers)• Remove all clothing except bathing suit • Float for 10 minutes • Swim six laps (must swim at least two laps of front crawl with rhythmic

breathing and one lap of back stroke – other three laps are swimmer’s choice) • Demonstrate two water safety skills in response to a “staged” emergency

Each swimmer who completes the Skills’ Test is awarded a DACC medal.

One of the most important topics of discussion at the DACC recently has beenabout how difficult it is to communicate information to large groups of people. Each person thinks that every other person receives information in the same wayas he or she does. Of course, that’s not true. As a result, organizations like theDACC must communicate in a variety of ways. The DACC will use these methods of communication and add others as needed:

• The website: www.thedacc.com

• Email Blasts: However, if we don’t have your email address at the DACC, wecan’t email you. The next time you come to the Center, please check that wehave your proper email or call the DACC at 570-275-3001. This is a member privilege.

• Program Booklets: Program Booklets were previously mailed to all members. Beginning August 15th, the DACC Program will be available on the website and in hard copy at the Center.

The DACC will continue to send postcard notifications for special events, submitarticles, photos, and announcements to the newspapers, and send letters regardingimportant information. Please read them. We don’t send very many.

At the Center, we want you to know “What’s Happening at the DACC.”

Please read the test to exit Swim Lessons (below). Would you be able to passthis test? Would your children be able to pass this test? If not, they needswimming lessons and the DACC, with an indoor, heated pool, is the place foryou and/or your children to take lessons. If you have any questions, please callthe Center at 570-275-3001. We want every person in our community to be safein, on, or around the water!

See you at the Center, Jean

The DACC Learn-to Swim Levels Intro to Swimming: This class is for children who are at least three years old.Skills to be learned include paddling with hands, proper kicking, slipping andclimbing out of the water, submersing head, and floating.Level I: Skills at Level I include jumping into the water, paddling and reaching, floating for 10 seconds without a belt, and demonstrating the elementarybackstroke and breast stroke (arms only). Level II: Belts are not encouraged at this level. Skills learned at Level II includethe elementary backstroke, traditional backstroke, and rhythmic breathing for theAmerican crawl. Also at this level, the basics of jumping and diving are taughtand swimmers learn to jump into deep water, push off the bottom and then pushto the top (a very important skill). Swimmers work on floating for longer periods of time. Level III: Swimmers will work on refining the backstroke, elementary backstroke,American crawl, and breaststroke. Diving, treading water, and jumping in andpushing off the bottom to a floating position are emphasized. Students begin towork on developing endurance.Level IV and Stroke Clinic: Stroke refinement and technique are the primarylessons at this level. Swimmers begin endurance work.

BEFORE YOU ENROLL YOUR CHILD IN SWIM LESSONS, pleaseunderstand that learning to swim is a commitment. It may take your child oneyear to complete all the levels of the DACC’s program or it may take three years. It will depend on many factors: readiness to learn, consistency, and practice. You can help your child advance his or her swimming skills more quickly bybringing your child to the DACC pool – or to any pool that is properly supervised– to practice and/or play in the water. If your family’s schedule will not permit a period of ongoing enrollment in swimlessons, perhaps waiting for a bit would be wise. New swimming skills buildupon learned skills and permit the child to proceed more quickly through thelevels.

DACC Learn-to-Swim Program

If you know a child who should be taking swim lessons and whose parents are unable to provideclasses (at all levels) because of a financial need, please contact us. Our annual United Way allocation provides for memberships and – because they are so important – swim lessons!
