AccordingtoScottFrith,CEOofLawnDoctor,alawncarecompanywithmorethan200franchisesaroundthecountry,manyhomeownersmakethesamebasicmistakesbeforegrassgoesdormant,andthenwonderwhytheirgrassisn'tdoingbetterthefollowingyear.Wondernomore.HereisFrith'sseven-stepprogramtogettingabeautifullawnnextyear.
1.Removetheleaves.Acarpetofcolorfulautumnleavesmaylookniceandbefuntoplayin,butthey'renogoodforgrass.Theyblockthelightandtrapmoisture,potentiallyfatalknockoutpunchesfortheunluckyturfunderneath.Sowhentheleavesarefalling,bloworrakethemawayasoftenasyoucan.Evenafterthetreesarebare,continuerakingoutthecornerswherethewindpilesleavesup.Ifyoudon't,comespringthegrassunderthatsoggy,decayingmatwillbedead.
2.Keepcutting,buttothecorrectheight.Don'tputthatmowerawayyet.Grasscontinuestogrowuptothefirsthardfrost,andsowillneedregularcutstokeepitatanideal2½-to3-inchheight.Ifyouletitgettoolong,itwillmatandbevulnerabletofungilikesnowmold.Cuttinggrasstooshortisjustasbad,becauseitcurtailstherootsystem—rootdepthisproportionaltocuttingheight—andimpedesthelawn'sabilitytowithstandwintercoldanddryness.Regularmowingalsogetsridofthosepeskyleaves,choppingthemupandleavingbehindasoil-enhancingmulch.
3.Continuewatering.Frithsaysthatpeopletendtoletuponwateringinthefallastheweathergetscooler."Theyfigurethatnaturewilltakecareofthingsforthem,"hesays.Whileit'struethatthere'smorerain,moredew,andlessevaporationatthistimeofyear,thatmaynotbeenoughtokeepthegrassrootswellhydratedandhealthygoingintothewinter.Ifyourlawnisn'tgettingatleastaninchofwateraweek—asimpleraingaugeisausefulwaytokeeptrack—thenkeepthesprinklersorirrigationsystemrunninguntiltheendofOctober.Bythattime,you'llwanttodisconnecthosesandflushtheirrigationsystemtoavoidfrozenpipesandspigots.
4.Loosenthesoil.Regularaeration—onceeverycoupleofyears,accordingtoFrith—preventssoilfrombecomingcompactedandcoveredwiththatch,athicklayerofroots,stems,anddebristhatblockswater,oxygen,andnutrientsfromreachingthesoil.Acoreaeratorcorrectsbothproblemsbypunchingholesthroughthatthatchandpullingupplugsofsoil."It'sagoodideatoaeratealawnrightbeforefertilizing,"Frithsays."Allthoseholesinyourturfwillletthefertilizerreachrighttotheroots,whereitcandothemostgood."
5.Addfertilizer.Justasgrassrootsneedwatertolastthewinter,theyalsobenefitfromashotoftheplantsugarsthatprotectrootsfromfreezingandgivetheentireplanttheenergytobouncebackinthespring.Thosesugarsareproducedbychlorophyll,whichgrassproducesinabundancewhenthere'senoughnitrogen.That'swhyFrithrecommendsalate-fallapplicationofaslow-releasegranular24-0-10fertilizer.Thenumbersindicatethepercentagebyweightofnitrogen,phosphorus,andpotassium,respectively.Potassiumisalsoimportantatthistimebecauseitaidsinrootgrowth,diseaseprotection,droughttolerance,andcoldresistance.(Asoiltestcantellyouhowmuchofeachnutrientyourlawnactuallyneeds.)Frithcautionsagainstspreadingfertilizerclosetowaterways,however;theyarevulnerabletocontaminationfromrunoff.LawnDoctor'scompanypolicyistomaintaina5-footbufferwhereverwaterispresent.

6.Spreadseed."Adenselawnalsoisgoodprotectionagainstweeds,"Frithsays,whichiswhyit'simportanttooverseedexistingturf.Notonlydoesthatfillinthinspotsorbarepatches,itallowsyoutointroducethelatestinresilient,drought-tolerantgrasses.Fallisthebesttimetooverseedbecausethegroundisstillwarm,moistureismoreplentiful,nightsarecool,andthesunisnotashotduringtheday.Buteventhen,"overseedingisoneofthemostchallenginglawn-carechores,"Frithsays.Youcan'tsimplybroadcastseedsoveranestablishedlawnandexpectthemtotakehold.Theyneedtobeinfullcontactwiththesoil,keptmoistuntiltheygerminate,andbewellenoughestablishedbeforeitgetstoocold.Rentingaslitseederisabetteroptionthanbroadcasting,butthosemachinesarenotoriousfortearingupturfandleavingyourlawnlookinglikeaharrowedfield.FrithsaysthatLawnDoctor'sproprietaryTurfTamerpowerseeder,whichsowsseedsbyinjectingthemintothesoil,isaless-damagingoption.
7.Stayonschedule.Eachofthestepsabovehastobedoneattherighttimeforbestresults.Otherwise,it'swastedeffort.Forinstance,overseedtoolateandtheseedlingswillbetootendertosurvive.Fertilizetooearlyandthegrasswillsenduptenderbladesthatwillgethammeredbythecold.Fertilizetoolateandthegrassrootswon'tbeabletoabsorballthosenutrientsyou'refeedingthem.Thinkingaboutaeratinginthespringbecauseyoucan'tgetaroundtoitthisfall?Don'tbother.Springaerationjustmakesiteasierforweedseedstogetestablished.
Ifstickingtothescheduleduringthefallisprovingtoodifficult,alawncareservicecanhandlethejobsthataren'tgettingdone.Mostoften,thosearetheonesthatrequirerentingheavymachinerylikecoreaeratorsandslitseeders,whicharehardtotransport,abeartooperate,andofteninshortsupplyattherentalyardsatthistimeofyear.Delegatingoneortwoofthosechorestoaproduringthisbusyseasonwillensuretheworkgetsdonewhenitshould—andthatyouwillbeenjoyingathickcarpetofgreengrassnextyear.

NeighborhoodSurroundingsby:LeannBrown UpdatesfromtheTownofFlowerMoundasofAugust18,2017:(Latestchangesareinred)
HeritagePark–PhaseIIIThis phase of the project includes an approximate 3000 sq. ft interactive play splash pad, a bio-swale andlandscaping. Additional amenities include: a rustic pavilion/outdoor classroom, a small restroom, 40 additionalparking spaces and connecting trails. The restroom will provide facilities for the rustic pavilion, future disc golfcourseanddogparkusers.AprofessionalservicesagreementwithSchrickel,RollinsandAssociates,Inc.,toprovidemasterplanningandconstructiondocumentsintheamountof$139,750wasapprovedbyTownCouncilonJune6,2016.BidswereadvertisedinDecember.Nobidswerereceivedfortheproject.Theprojectwasrebid inFebruarywith Northstar Construction being the lowest bidder. The award of construction contract with NorthstarConstruction,LLC.,intheamountof$1,591,910andselectedbidoptionsintheamountof$222,800,wasapprovedbyTownCouncilonMay1.ConstructionbeganJune5,2017.Contractorhassubmitteddesignplansforthesplashpadandtheyarebeingreviewedbystaffandtheconsultant.Theinstallationofthedecorativetrailfromtheparkinglottothepavilioniscomplete.Anticipatedcompletion:March2018HeritagePark–PhaseIVThisprojectwillincludeanadditionaleighteenparkingplaceswithlighting,concretesidewalktoconnecttothetrail,a wildflower meadow with designated areas with irrigation, a plaza area with signage kiosk/sundial structure, ascenic overlook, connection of a nature trail to the east side of the park via stone steps along embankment, aneighteenholediscgolfcourseandanentrysignattheplazaareaandallinfrastructuretosupporttheseelements.The professional services agreement with Schrickel, Rollins, and Associates, Inc. to provide professional masterplanningandconstructiondocumentsintheamountof$147,000wasapprovedbyTownCouncilonMarch20,2017.Staffprovided50%planreviewcommentstoconsultant.
