Contemporary Italian lms to premiere in Hawai‘i! Get a taste of cinema “Ital-ian style”: the hearty humor, zesty attitude, political world view and deep tradition that will transport you to Italy without a plane ticket (or jet lag)!

18 YEARS LATER ::

In this winning road movie, two estranged brothers, traveling in a classically restored Morgan convert-ible, are obliged to deliver their father’s ashes to his hometown in Calabria. Genziano and Mirko Leo) haven’t spoken for 18 years, ever since a mysterious accident involving their mother. As they travel across Italy, the brothers revisit and ght about various fam-ily secrets. A touching and funny work about sibling relations, the picturesque Calabrian countryside, and a diverse and bouncy soundtrack. Excerpt taken from the SIFF, NICE website.

Director: Edoardo LeoItaly, 2010, 100 minutes

FORTAPASC ::

The true story of a 26 year old Neapolitan investigative journal-ist, Giancarlo Siani-who in 1985 digs deep into the workings of the Camorra. Siani assigned the name Fortapasc to the borough in which he lived and wrote about. Fortapasc is Neapolitan slang for a Fort Apache under siege.

Director: Marco Risi Italy, 2009 108 minutes

HAPPY FAMILY ::

A blocked screenwriter, Ezio , is trying to nish a story about two o -kilter families (including Diego Abatantuono, Margherita Buy, and Fabrizio Bentivoglio) thrown together when their teen-age children announce they’re getting married. So Ezio writes himself into the story with a romantic part—a development his characters welcome, as they’ve got some ideas of their own for bigger and better roles. Echoes of Pirandello, Wes Anderson, and Woody Allen run through this delightful, provocative comedy, a welcome return to the genre for Salvatores (Mediterraneo, Marrakech Express). Excerpt taken from the SIFF, NICE website.

Director: Gabriele Salvatores Italy, 2010 90 minutes

A QUITE LIFE ::

A richly textured performance from the great Toni Servillo (Il Divo, Gomorrah) anchors this slow-burn dramatic thriller, a bril-liant addition to the new school of sophisticated Italian crime lms that focus more on character than action. Behind Rosario’s mild-mannered façade, glimpses of an ingrained, inescapable violence seep out even before the Napolitani show up. Direc-tor Claudio Cupellini—never once resorting to hysterical “mob movie” clichés—orchestrates a subtle, accelerating suspense around Servillo’s role as a con ̈icted family man whose attempts to pro-tect those he loves the most invite only more pain.” Taken from the Italian Cultural Institute in New York’s website.

Director: Claudio Cupellini Italy, 2010, 100 minutes
