EDITOR’S NOTEWelcome to the fall issue of Folia Montana where we focus onMSVU’s continued commitment to enhancing our greatercommunity. After all, isn’t this the reason institutes of highlearning were created? The calling of any university should be tomake those in and around its campus more thoughtful andgenuine contributors to the world around them. At the Mount, this has been happening for 135 years.

In the summer issue, you saw how the Chair of the Women’sStudies Department, Dr. Meredith Ralston, is doing her part, using filmmaking to shine a light on the horror of the traffickingof young women in the Philippines. Her film, Hope in Heaven, has just received another well-deserved accolade, winning anational media award from Beyond Borders, an organizationbased in Winnipeg that deals with child sexual exploitation.

Congratulations to Ralston, Dr. Stephen Perrott of MSVU’SDepartment of Psychology, and your other colleagues involvedwith Hope in Heaven.

And, kudos to all faculty, staff, students and alumnae whosecommitment and work continues to exemplify the values of theMount. This will ensure that the Mount maintains its presence in the community for years to come.

Donna Redmond Gates, BPR ’95

Fall is a time of change – our green world becomes a brilliantpalate of colours and the relaxed summer pace gives way tobusier schedules.

Each year, we look forward to the return of our students, theinduction of new alumnae during convocation, catching up withformer graduates and welcoming new members into our faculty.

This academic year promises to be an exciting one for theMount. Our Capital Campaign, Building Tomorrow Together is infull swing, bringing our goals of a new Teaching, Learning andResearch Centre, new scholarships and enhanced academicexcellence closer to fruition.

The Mount will also create a Chair in Learning Disabililities, oneof only four in the world, to develop “best practices”programming so that the teachers of tomorrow gain the skillsthey need to ensure all children are able to realize theiracademic potential.

We continue to build on our heritage of social responsibility inthe community as we chart a course for our University to thrivelocally, nationally and internationally. Through flexible learningoptions, the Mount provides educational opportunities forpeople of all ages at their own pace, and our students gaininternational perspectives that enhance their capacity tobecome global citizens.

Research capacity at the Mount has increased by more than 200per cent over the past few years, and the dissemination of thatknowledge benefits communities around the world. Scholarshipin aging and caregiving policy, applied human nutrition and foodsecurity, gerontology and housing needs of aging AtlanticCanadians are examples of the many research projects thathave a direct impact on communities.

Faculty members have also captured grants from CanadaFoundation for Innovation and are involved in excess of 100ongoing research partnerships with community organizations.

Alumnae are an integral part of our legacy and future. Yourparticipation in our Capital Campaign and in the development ofour new strategic plan is a crucial component of our University’ssuccess, and we invite you to continue to remain engaged in theyears to come.

Awarded annually, the Mount SaintVincent Alumnae Award for TeachingExcellence recognizes both superior

teaching ability as well as a facultymember’s contributions to the standardsof higher learning. A committee of faculty, alumnae and students evaluate nomineesthrough classroom observation andpersonal interviews. Candidates are alsoasked to provide a philosophy statementon their approach to teaching. They areassessed on their attention to studentneeds, their successful communication ofsubject matter and the reputation theyhave earned from both students andcolleagues. Clare Goulet, part-time facultymember in the Department of English, waspresented the 2007 Mount Saint VincentAlumnae Award for Teaching Excellence atSpring Convocation last May.

Goulet has been a part-time facultymember at the University since 1999.Goulet’s personal teaching philosophy

states, “My approach is to try to makeeach class a tiny, lively cell with apermeable membrane – the students andmyself bringing not only our books but ourwhole lives to the class, while taking ideasfrom the classroom back into the rest ofour lives: each space informing the other.”

Understanding and embracing thedifferences in students from all disciplinesacross the University help make Goulet anexceptional educator. She often leads herstudents to the MSVU Art Gallery to writepoetry about the structural arrangementof the exhibits. Supporting a mathematicsstudent who chose to develop a play on a19th-century astronomer for a directedstudies course is another example of herdedication to the enhancement of herstudents’ critical thinking skills.

Congratulations and welcome to all new faculty memberswho have joined the Mount this year.

In The Creationist Debate: The encounterbetween the Bible and the Historical Mind,Arthur McCalla frames the evolution-creationism controversy within a historicalstudy of the intersection of Western biblicalinterpretation and the various historicalsciences. He demonstrates that modern-daycreationists oppose not only evolutionarybiology but all historical sciences in order toprotect the absolute truth of the Bible bylocating its words beyond the complexitiesand uncertainties of historical existence.

The Strengthof ScienceFunding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation is helpingBiology professor Dr. German Avila-Sakar discover more abouthow plants defend themselves now and in the climate of our future.

Avila-Sakar is examining the tolerance function in Brassica rapa,a fast growing turnip. The tolerance function relates to how theplant defends itself against predators, in this case moth larva, under certain conditions. He studies these plants because theyreproduce so quickly – up to four times a year.

The biology lab has benefited greatly from the funding as twohighly sophisticated microscopes were purchased as well as thefour growth chambers for the turnips. The chambers, whichresemble large commercial refrigerators, control the temperatureand humidity as well as regulate the carbon dioxide levels. Thissimulates the climate of our world 50-100 years from now.

It is his hope the findings will have an impact on agriculturalpolicy. “I want to find out if we really need to spend money oncontrolling pests or producing organic produce. We’re examiningthe change in seed output when the plant faces danger and whatthat means in terms of loss to the farmer,” he says.

FEATURE STORY

Folia Montana 9

The University’s commitment tostrengthening the larger community iswitnessed daily through two special on-campus endeavors: the Nova ScotiaCentre on Aging (NSCA) and the Centrefor Women in Business (CWB). Both arecelebrating their 15th anniversaries this year.

Nova Scotia Centre on Aging The Nova Scotia Centre on Aging isaffiliated with MSVU’s Department ofFamily Studies and Gerontology and has a three-part mandate of research,

continuing education and communityconsultation on age-related issues. Itdraws upon the advice and support of aneleven-member, community-basedAdvisory Board.

For 15 years, the NSCA has played aleadership role in addressing importantquestions related to caregiving, continuing care and healthy aging. TheNSCA has provided seniors, academicsand policy makers with opportunities tolearn and participate in collaborativemulti-disciplinary research in agingresearch nationally and internationally.

Caregiving by family and friends has beena primary focus for the NSCA, but otherareas of focus include technology andaging, human resource planning, seniors

housing, rural communities, prescriptiondrug use, and Alzheimer's disease.Recent initiatives include working on aWorld Health Organization initiative tounderstand what makes communitiesage-friendly, as well as the examination ofadult day programs in other jurisdictions.

The Centre has a reputation for producinghigh-quality, relevant materials such asvideos, training manuals, educational kits, issue papers, articles, fact sheets andtechnical reports. As well, it has hostednumerous educational and policy forums, round tables, town hall meetings andpublic lectures; organized conferencesand symposia; conducted evaluations;served on community boards andcommittees; and consulted with seniorsorganizations and decision makers.

The Mount in theCommunityMount Saint Vincent was built on a steadfast tradition of service to the community which lives on today,

135 years later. The Mount gives in so many ways, through the actions of our students, faculty, staff and

alumnae to the actual programs and centres on campus.

In fact, each January the University designates a special holiday, Caritas Day, to encourage those in our

campus community to give back to the broader community. This began as a way of recognizing those

that came to the Mount’s aid after the terrible fire in 1951.

The CWB, which is housed in theMeadows, operates on funding from theAtlantic Canada Opportunities Agency toprovide female entrepreneurs with thesupport, training and resources they needto succeed in business. Since its inception15 years ago, the CWB has helped morethan 4,000 women start and growbusinesses.

The CWB believes that when womensucceed in business, they contribute tothe economy, and ultimately, contribute tothe community. While the Centre’s mainfocus is to help and support women inbusiness, both women and men arewelcome to use the programs and servicesoffered by CWB. These range frombusiness advisory sessions to businessmanagement training workshops. TheCWB plans to expand its programs and

services to serve more women across theprovince.

The CWB also works with students, connecting the resources of the classroomwith the business community. This givesbusiness owners access to the leading-edge knowledge of students, whileproviding students with an opportunity tofind mentors and gain valuable real-worldexperience.

MSVU Alumnae please note: The CWB has special membership rates for ourgraduates. For more information on theCWB, please visit wwwwww..mmssvvuu..ccaa//ccwwbb.

The Community of our ChildrenAlso located on campus is the Mount’sChild Study Centre. The Centre provideschild care spots for both children of MSVUemployees and those in the broadercommunity. The Centre celebrated its 30th

anniversary earlier this year.

Ten years ago, the Child Study Centrebegan a specialized program for childrenwith autism.

“We had several children with thisdiagnosis at the time and knew there wasnothing in the community to serve thesefamilies,” says Debbie Armstrong, BCS’82, Director. “The knowledge of Autismhas grown so much since then. A decadeago, we would focus on one-on-oneteaching, but today we see the benefits ofincluding all children in activities, all witha very family focused approach.”

The child care specialists at the Centrework with the families to set achievablegoals to assist in the child’s learning anddevelopment. Teachers and others

The Mount Community continues its strong support of the CanadianBreast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. Each year theUniversity has a stellar showing which is acknowledged by theFoundation. Eighty members of the Mount community includingfaculty, staff and students donned their MSVU shirts and runningshoes in support of the 2007 CIBC Run for the Cure.

An Annual TraditionFoster was so pleased to have the students at thenews conference that he offered them a chance tocompete in a writing competition to have their workpublished on his website. The winner was TraceyBoland, currently in her second year.

Community OutreachThrough distance learning, MSVU courses reachcommunities and students near and far. Some are on-campus students, some live outside the HalifaxRegional Municipality (HRM) and some areinternational.

About half of distance students take their courses the “traditional” way which the Mount pioneered, through television, while the other half use on-lineaccess, complemented by either a live webfunctionality or teleconference with instructors.

The broadcast of MSVU courses on ASN or Channel33 (in the HRM) provides an informal learningopportunity for non-students. It has even served as avaluable recruitment tool.

For greater mobility, the courses can also be burnedto DVDs, which can then be rented. Becomingincreasing popular with students is creating digitalfiles of the courses that can be viewed on-line as adownloadable file or as streaming video which can bewatched on-line or even on a video MP3 player.

Whether on campus or abroad, MSVU’s valuescontinue to resonate with those connected to theMount. As we tell our students, MSVU isn’t just auniversity, it’s a community.
