Breaking Ground on a New Era of Health Care in TroyOn September 30, St. Peter’s Health Partners broke ground for its $99 million Troy Master Facilities Plan (MFP) – a strategic redevelopment project aimed at transforming the face of health care in Troy, Rensselaer County and the surrounding communities.

St. Peter’s Health Partners’ Center for Philanthropy has established a strong partnership for our legacy foundations and is leading the way to raise awareness and financial support for our organizations’ shared commitment to the communities we serve.

In this spirit, the Northeast Health Foundation and the Seton Health Foundation have joined together to help keep pace with the ever-changing needs of our health care system.

We are beginning our journey with the launching of the Transforming Health Care in Troy capital campaign.

Our hospitals are facing unprecedented challenges due to federal health care reform, which focuses on expanded primary and ambulatory care, and continued reductions in state and federal reimbursement.

Through this campaign, we are embarking on the most significant capital investment in the history of Rensselaer County. The Troy Master Facilities Plan will reconfigure and

consolidate the hospitals to provide greater access, efficiency and fiscal sustainability, with the ultimate goal a reinvigorated, state-of-the-art health care presence for the community.

The plans are ambitious, and our vision bold. It will take time to implement these plans and an enormous commitment of resources to bring them to fruition. Our goal is to raise $25 million toward the project cost in an effort to meet the community’s evolving health care needs today and prepare for a healthy tomorrow.

This vision and passion would not be possible without your generous support of our organizations. Thank you. Together, we can look forward to creating a new future in health care.

$10 Million Anonymous Troy MFP Donor Revealed

James K. Reed, MD, President & CEO, St. Peter’s Health Partners, Heinrich A. Medicus, Ph.D and Norman E. Dascher, Jr., CEO, Samaritan and St. Mary’s hospitals, and Vice President, St. Peter’s Health Partners.

At the September Troy Master Facilities Plan (MFP) ground-breaking ceremony, St. Peter’s Health Partner’s President and CEO, James K. Reed, MD, introduced the crowd to Heinrich A. Medicus, a 95-year-old resident of Beechwood, The Eddy’s independent senior living community in Troy. Medicus had anonymously pledged the $10 million gift in March 2013, just months after St. Peter’s Health Partners (SPHP) first announced the Troy MFP in November 2012.

Heinrich was born in Zurich, Switzerland on Christmas Eve 1918 to an artist mother and philosopher father. His father, Fritz Medicus, had come from Germany to Switzerland before WWI. When the Nazis took over in Germany in 1933, he and his family resigned their German citizenship, becoming Swiss. Heinrich would become an American citizen when he settled in Troy later in his life.

Heinrich studied physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, where Einstein and Roentgen had studied, completing his doctorate in 1949. The following year, he came to the U.S. where he was a fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. He moved to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), completed his fellowship and was offered an instructorship.

In 1955, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) made Heinrich an enticing offer. He made the Collar City his home.

In 1978, Heinrich and his siblings inherited a considerable fortune from their German industrialist uncle. But, Heinrich did not change his lifestyle after receiving the inheritance and as the stock market started its long assent, his wealth grew.

Over the years, Heinrich became a donor and philanthropist quietly and slowly, giving some of his fortune away through gifts, always with great purpose.

A few years ago, when his wife Hildegard passed, Heinrich decided he wanted to include in his legacy an area health care institution – his hospital of choice – Samaritan Hospital. So he pledged the $10 million gift – the largest individual gift ever bestowed upon a health care institution in the history of Troy and Rensselaer County, and one that would have a considerable impact for bettering the whole community.

In appreciation for Heinrich’s remarkable gift, the planned five-story pavilion at Samaritan Hospital will be named The Heinrich Medicus Pavilion upon its completion.

The Albany Memorial Hospital Emergency Room expresses their deep gratitude for a generous donation of Pediatric Immobilization Backboards. The gift was made in memory of the hospital’s long-standing volunteer, Susan Rosenthal by her daughter. The boards will allow staff to stabilize a child’s head, neck, back and leg during a trauma ensuring there is not further injury from additional movements decreasing the chance of the injury becoming permanent.

Visions of Strength 2014Many thanks to everyone who helped make Visions of Strength 2014 an outstanding success! The event was held on October 23 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy and all proceeds benefit the Integrative Wellness Programs at the Cancer Treatment Center at Samaritan Hospital.

We are especially thankful for this year’s presenting sponsors:

The Legacy Circle Luncheon was held on June 30 at Wolferts Roost Country Club in Albany. This annual event was established to honor and thank those who have made a planned gift through a bequest, trust, gift annuity, life insurance or other charitable estate gift to a Northeast Health or Seton Health affiliate through the Legacy Circle and the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton recognition societies. Our Foundations are non-profit entities whose sole purpose is fundraising for affiliates of the Northeast Health and Seton Health systems. Both organizations have been very fortunate to have received bequests and other estate gifts which have been instrumental in supporting the excellent services that we have today.

The St. Mary’s campus will be transformed into a leading-edge outpatient facility, including: • an Emergency Department/Urgent Care Facility; • Outpatient Medical Oncology/Chemotherapy;• Women’s Health Center; • School of Nursing;• Primary Care;• Sleep Lab;• Physical Therapy;• Wound Care; • Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation;• Outpatient Endoscopy;• Ambulatory Surgery.

Music to their ears …On August 18, Glen Eddy, the Eddy’s senior living community in Niskayuna, celebrated the launch of its new music program in partnership with the Union College Concert Series.

Many Glen Eddy residents have been life-long concert-goers and supporters of the arts. However, due to mobility or convenience issues, many find that they can no longer attend concerts on their own. The music program at Glen Eddy promises to bring high caliber musicians in house for all residents to enjoy. The program is not intended to replace the community’s many scheduled cultural and entertainment outings.

The Glen Eddy Music Program was made possible by the generous financial and programing support of its founders: Marilyn and Bob Beadle, Helen and Hal Webster, Roy and Rita Calkins, Derek Delaney, and Alberta Peroutky. Other significant contributors include Dr. Sue Wright, Rae Chen, Trudy Carpenter, David Raycroft, and Hilda Clohesy.

Samaritan Hospital and Seton AuxiliariesOver the years, the Samaritan Hospital and Seton auxiliaries have supported our hospitals through their many fundraising and humanitarian efforts.

When asked to help support our initiative to transform health care in Troy, there was no hesitation. This was a once- in-a-lifetime opportunity for the auxiliaries to continue their legacy and long history of giving time, talent and financial support to our hospitals and to help transform the future of health care for generations to come.

Combined over their long history, and including their most recent support of this campaign, the two organizations have donated more than $2.6 million dollars.

The Nancy B. Clemente Cancer FundOktoberBreast was held Oct 18 at Troy Hilton Garden Inn. With more than 150 people in attendance, the event raised $10,500 for the Nancy B. Clemente Cancer Fund. Nancy and her family are dedicated to raising awareness, promoting and supporting educational programs developed for cancer survivors. They work in collaboration with Samaritan Hospital’s Cancer Treatment Center.

Auxiliary presidents, Pat O’Brien, Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary and Fran Hyde, Seton Auxiliary.
