No Place Like Home Event Hits Home With Donors This year’s 2013 “No Place Like Home” dinner and auction saw more success than ever before, setting a new standard for years to come. Due to the generous support of our sponsors, donors, and guests, North Shore CDC raised over $52,000. The support of our donors will go directly back as an investment in our local neighborhoods to create thriving communities throughout the North Shore. A special thanks to our Host Sponsors, Eastern Bank, Endicott College, and Landmark Construction, as well as our hosts for the evening Jenny Johnson and Billy Costa.! Our guest speaker, Dorothy Stoneman, CEO & Founder of YouthBuild North Shore was inspirational and our YouthBuild students were thrilled to showcase the birdhouses they made, representing what a home meant to each of them individually. Again, we thank all of those who were apart of the night and look forward to next year’s event!

Every year, North Shore CDC hosts a local Toys for Tots campaign for our residents in Beverly and Salem. This year, North Shore CDC not only provided gifts for all our young residents, we also hosted a regional Toys for Tots campaign for families throughout the North Shore. Many families that weren’t connect-ed with a specific social service organization had the opportunity to sign up through Toys for Tots to receive holiday gifts for their children. Overall, North Shore CDC provided gifts for 315 families.

YouthBuild North Shore’s “What a HomeMeans to Me”

YouthBuild North Shore has been building homes in Lynn this past semester. They shared the impact of this project by explaining what a home personally meant to them.

Home is a place that I sleep at night. Home is a place where I won’t be judged for simple things like my stinky feet after a long day. Last but not least, home is where I interact with family and friends over dinner -Dylan

Born and raised in Massachusetts, a home to me is where you can spend time with pals and watch the Boston sports. Home is where the heart is I guess -LuisMy dad and I have stuck together through it all. To me, my family is where I belong, that’s my home -Jasmine

Over the past 10 years, the number of people living in poverty on the North Shore increased by more than 20%. Recognizing the importance of the growing poverty in our region, North Shore CDC hosted a forum to respond to the deepening crisis. With our co-hosts, Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) and North Shore United Way, the forum discussed municipal poverty trends over the past decade. Using their analysis, MAPC found that most poverty on the North Shore has remained concentrated in Salem, Peabody, Beverly, and Gloucester.

The forum welcomed guest speaker, Elizabeth Kneebone of the Brookings Institution, author of Confronting Suburban Poverty in America who highlighted the efforts of metro areas throughout the nation. Her discussion centered around how local leaders are learning to do more with less and are adjusting their approaches to address the metropolitan scale of poverty by integrating services and

service delivery, collaborating across sectors and jurisdictions,& using data-driven and flexible funding strategies. Our own local leaders, Lucy Corchado of the Point Neighborhood Association, Mickey Northcutt of North Shore CDC, Julie LaFontaine of The Open Door, and special guest Lisa Davis of the Ford Foundation shared their experience on collaborating across sectors to produce strong local planning and policy options that address poverty in our region.
