Public Speaking and Mock Trial programs are focused on grooming students’ communication skills at different levels.

“I like the formality of the mock trial. It was exciting! I learnt different points about the style of giving my speech and more

technical terms. I also developed my public speaking skills and learnt the role of the barristers.” - A.L.

Mock Trial is a highly competitive debate activity which students simulate a fictional legal case while applying real legal rules. Students study the law, write scripts for questioning witnesses, and present speeches, attempting to prove their case to a jury composed of actual lawyers.

Organized by ARCH Community Outreach (ACO), the non-profit arm of ARCH, the Hong Kong Inter-School Mock Trial Championship (www.hongkongmocktrial.org) is the largest mock trial competition for secondary students in Hong Kong. The winning team is sponsored by ACO to participate in an international competition in the US. This year, HKISMTC is in partnership with Empire Mock Trial and with support from the University of Hong Kong.

W R I T EOur Writing program guides students to develop varied writing styles and greater fluidity in their use of language.

Students are exposed to a range of writing genres, including descriptive, narrative and expository. These are explored through text analysis and in-class practice. Submodules focus on key skills required for the different writing tasks, and build on previous work to ensure students’ progress. Proofreading and editing activities are incorporated to help students internalise their learning, whilst building essential strategies for correcting mistakes and improving their own writing.

“It was a very fruitful and enjoyable course. My favorite part was the interactions in class. We bounced ideas of each other a lot which in the end made understanding all that was taught even easier!” - student in Writing Advanced

◆ How would you like to travel back in time? Explore ancient civilizations and write about how people lived thousands of years ago? In Writing Foundation, you’ll learn how to craft letters, stories and vivid descriptions while uncovering the secrets of history. ◆ Fancy yourself a Sherlock Holmes? A writer for a magazine? In Writing Junior, students learn the ins and outs of writing descriptively and effectively. You will learn expository writing and develop feature articles for a magazine! Then, using skills such as imagery and analogy, we’ll also learn how to create vivid characters and settings for detective stories.

◆ What does the future have in store? How to create your own adventure? What is literary analysis? In Writing Intermediate, you’ll dive into these topics. Use foreshadowing and flashbacks to predict the future of our planet; learn how to create compelling narratives that take your reader on a journey; and finally master the art of essay writing using quotations and paraphrases, evidence and analysis, and effective editing techniques.

◆ Manipulate narratives by bending time and switching perspective; write your own screen-play; and delve into the depths of literary analysis. You will be challenged to write multiple short stories from different view-points in “Who can you trust?” Then tackle the task of writing screen-plays using a 3-Act structure focused on characters and framing. Finally, master the essay and impress your teachers by analysing content, themes, language and symbolism.
