The most successful 10 years inTivy’s history saw the Antlers posta 93-34 record under former coach
Mark Smith, a decade of excellence inwhich Tivy twice reached the Class 4Astate semifinals and recorded six seasonswith 10 or more wins.
Smith’s run between 2002 and 2011ended last February when he moved onto lead perennial Class 5A powerhouseConverse Judson, but his departure hasdone little to damage Tivy’s reputation asa team to be feared. The Antlers entertheir 2012 campaign as the San Antonio
Express News’ 10th-ranked area pro-gram, and were ranked 11th in the stateby Dave Campbell’s prestigious TexasFootball magazine in June.
Replacing Smith won’t be easy, but onereason pollsters have continued to showTivy respect is the off-season hiring ofnew head coach David Jones last March.no stranger to winning himself, Jonescompiled a 38-13 record in four years asClass 5A Cypress Woods’ front man, leading the Wildcats to the playoffs ineach season, including back-to-back tripsto the state quarterfinals in 2009 and2010. Jones’ 2011 team averaged 448yards and 41 points per game while run-ning an offensive scheme similar to the
Antlers’ prolific spread attack.Smith didn’t exactly leave the Tivy cup-
board bare, either.Jones inherits ateam with 22 re-turning lettermen, including five of-fensive and fourdefensive startersback from lastfall’s 11-3 Class4A Region IVfinalist unit. Lead-ing the way is thearea’s top quarter-back in senior Parks Mcneil. The 5-foot-10,165-pounder headlined an offensive
assault that averaged 433 yards and 37points per game, passing for 2,520 yards
and 26 touchdownsand rushing for another1,662 yards and 22scores.
Mcneil will operatebehind an offensiveline that features threebig All-District honor-able mention returnersin seniors MadisonWilmot (6-2-250) andBrian McCarty (6-0,225) and junior Hunter

Fortunately, outsiders’ percep-tion of Mcneil may finally bechanging. Texas Football notedhis value to the Antlers in its2012 high school football pre-view, writing that “HavingMcneil back is key for Tivy, ateam that appears good enoughto challenge for a state title.”The San Antonio Express Newsechoed those sentiments. “WithParks Mcneil returning for hissenior season after a big year in2011, expectations will be ashigh as ever in the HillCountry,” the Express Newsnoted.
For his part, Mcneil doesn’tworry about the accolades.
“That’s not really a big deal tome as long as we put the pointsup,” the often soft-spoken seniorsaid. “I’m pretty sure we wentfurther in the playoffs than anyof them did. That’s what’simportant to me and our team.”
Sounds an awful lot like thatquarterback from Green Bay.

Parks Mcneil’s favorite quarter-back should be Aaron Rodgers. The Tivy gunslinger and the
Green Bay All-Pro could certainlyempathizewith eachother’s bat-tle for recognition.
It took Rodgers two Super Bowlchampionships to fully exorcise thememory of predecessor Brett Favre inthe icy confines of Packerland. Mcneilhas faced a similar situation at Tivydespite putting up both victories andoffensive numbers at an equally impres-sive pace. As a starter in2011, the 5-foot-10, 165-pounder led the Antlersto an undefeated District28-4A title and a four-game playoff run, pass-ing for 2,520 yards and26 touchdowns and rush-ing for another 1,662yards and 22 scores.Included in that stretchwas a masterful 552 totalyard, six-TD showing(four rushing, two passing) in Tivy’s50-43 regional semifinal win over PortLavaca Calhoun, a victory highlightedby Mcneil’s game-winning 24-yardtouchdown run with just 31 seconds leftto play.
not that winning is anything new toMcneil. As a seventh and eighth grader,he guided Peterson Middle School’s Ateams to a 13-1-1 record over two years, then paced Tivy’s freshman team to fourwins before an injury shortened his 2009season. A year later, Mcneil passed andran for 21 touchdowns and engineeredfive victories at the junior varsity levelbefore being moved up to varsity withthree games left in the season.
Mcneil’s ascent to the starting quarter-
back position came the next fall, wherethe then-junior was saddled with thepressure of replacing graduated All-State and Parade All-American quar-terback Johnny Manziel, now astarter at Texas A&M. Despitehaving to endure compar-isons to Manziel through-out the year, Mcneilresponded with graceunder fire, capping theseason with morewins (10), total offen-sive yards (4,182) andtouchdowns (48) than anyother quarterback in District 28-4A.
Apparently, that wasn’t enough to con-vince the district’s coaches of Mcneil’s
worth. When the postseason All-District team was announced, SanAntonio McCollum quarterbackAlex Rios (2,412 total yards, 25touchdowns, eight wins) earnedOffensive Most Valuable Playerhonors, while uvalde’s Cory Raley(2,333 total yards, 24 TDs, fourwins) and San Antonio Harlandale’sJake Cardenas (1,747 yards, 14 TDs,three wins) picked up first- and sec-ond-team All-District recognition atquarterback, respectively. Inexpli-
cably, Mcneil was relegated to an hon-orable mention All-District nod.
“That’s why I’ve never really put a lotof stock into All-District teams,”Mcneil’s former Tivy coach MarkSmith said. “The guys that finished infront of him were seniors, and you don’twant to take anything away from them, but at the same time Parks is such acompetitor and wants to win so muchthat you don’t want to take anythingaway from him either. Did he get therespect he deserved last year? Probablynot, but the great thing about Parks isthat he doesn’t really care as long as histeam is winning.”

Just how dominant were the 1936 TivyAntlers, the only team in school histo-ry to reach the state championship
game in football? The numbers speak for themselves.
Over 12 games, the Antlers outscoredtheir opponents by a better than 5-to-1margin, recorded five shutouts and gaveup just six points in five other games.Tivy’s one loss, a 19-6 setback toAmarillo in the state title game at ButlerField in Amarillo, came to a Sandie teamthat wrapped up a third consecutive statechampionship with the win.
In that climactic showdown, Tivy All-State quarterback Roy Holbrook hit team-mate and Antler co-captain Alfred Rustwith a touchdown pass for the Antlers’lone score.

After two straight trips to regionals, Tivy’s tennisteam knows what it takes to be successful, andthe Antlers have a host of returning talent to make
a run at a third consecutive regional berth in 2012.Leading the way are seniors Claire Russell and GretchenStacy, and junior Sarah Hayes, all of whom recordedwins in regional final competition against GregoryPortland.
Tivy should be bolstered in its bid for another regionalberth by the play of returning seniors Gabe Schlechte andCarl Barth in boys competition, as well as promisingsophomores Cody Highsmith and Scott Schulte.
Another trip to regionals in 2011 has the Tivy girlscross country team looking for a return engage-ment this fall, and the Lady Antlers certainly have
the firepower to do so with returning senior AshleyAbrigo back. Abrigo clocked a regional-qualifying 11:55at last year’s district meet in Boerne, and Tivy had fourother returners — Sarah Muehlstein, Kendall McKenzie, nicole Fowler and Haley Poole — turn in solid districtshowings.
Tivy’s boys team should be strong too with TommyAnthony, Gage Arbogast and Kirk Hodel back from lastfall’s fourth-place district finisher.
After a strong spring showing that saw him puncha ticket to regionals, two-time All-District Tivysenior Kyle Holmes is hoping to continue his
strong play this fall. Holmes leads an Antler team thatincludes juniors Reed Jones, Adam Cowart and BriceFreedle, and sophomores Sean Stumbo and Colinuecker. Tivy missed qualifying for regionals as a teamlast fall by just two strokes.
Tivy’s girls team also has veteran talent returning inMadeline Roloff, ella Hill, Kaleigh Flowers, MarlenaLopez, Katie McCarty, Addie Clark and Faith Mayo.newcomers include Hannah Johnson and Lindsey Ivey.

Graduation pretty much cleaned the board at Our Lady of the Hills fol-lowing the Hawks’ run to a third consecutive TAPPS Class 2A six-man state semifinal berth last fall. OLH lost five starters from that 10-3
unit, including the school’s all-time leading offensive yardage producer inMarshall Walker. In addition, longtime Hawk coaches Jeremy Thornton and
Matt Casey left in the spring to pursue other opportunities.OLH took a big step forward over the summer in its
rebuilding process with the hiring of new head coachChris Ramirez. The former quarterback from Refugioinherits a team that has just one starter back from last fall’sjuggernaut, senior eli Reyna. Reyna will be relied on toprovide both leadership and offensive firepower afterrushing for 412 yards and seven touchdowns in 2011and hauling in 13 passes for another 289 yards andtwo scores.
Ramirez plans to combine Reyna’s breakawayspeed with the talents of newcomers ZachBarrientos and Wyatt Williams to com-prise an interchangeable three-waythreat at running back and quarter-back. Barrientos, a junior, pro-vides exceptional arm strengthto go along with a tough run-ning game, and Williamsdemonstrated accuracythrowing the ball last fallon the Hawks’ junior var-sity team.
Senior Love Frazer saw significant playing time lastyear and will be counted on to bring heat on the defensiverush.
Projected starters in this year’s OLH lineup includeoffensive lineman Rollins Olmsted, wide receiversDylan Huser and Zach Feller, and sophomoreZachary Ramsey.
“I look for Ramsey to make an immediateimpact on both sides of the ball,” Ramirezsaid, “and Olmsted will anchor the line ofscrimmage offensively. Huser and Felleradd experience, leadership and versatil-ity.”
Other newcomers to the Hawks’varsity roster include Luke
Martinez, Matt Williams, nicolas neave, GabrielGutierrez, Ross Potter, Andrew Chapman, CorwinKnight, Tyler Thomas, Jordan Sirianni, BrandonHavis, Scott Short and Rance Frazier.
As always, OLH’s district offers up toughcompetition in 2011 state semifinalistBulverde Bracken and a rising BoerneGeneva team.

Former Tampa Buccaneer coachJohn McKay was once askedabout his team’s execution during
a game. He famously replied, “I’m allfor it.” Center Point head coach BubbaWalters knows for his team to repeat lastyear’s success, it will come down to exe-cution.
The 2011 version of the Pirates hadone of the most successfulseasons in the program’shistory, going 6-5 and earn-ing the squad’s first playoffberth in eight years. Waltershas been pleased with theway that success has carriedover into this year.
“We had a really goodturnout during summerworkouts,” Walters said. “Itwas a lot easier this summernot having to implement thewhole system. We wereable to add stuff and thekids understand it more.
“The kids have workedreally hard and don’t wantlast year to be a one-timething,” Walters added.“They want to keep thisgoing for us and continue tomake the playoffs and evengo a step further than lastyear. They know what ittakes to win.”
Center Point’s 2011 teamdepended on a big offensiveline and the play of sopho-more quarterback andDistrict 14-ADI OffensiveMost Valuable PlayerRoberto Zendejo to movethe ball. This year’s offen-sive line is much differentand smaller, and Zendejohas undergone a positionchange to try to get the ballin his hands in situations that better suithis talent of being an elusive runner.
“We basically lost our offensive line,”Walters said. “We lost about 950 pounds
across the line. We aretrading size for speed.”
The Pirates’ linewill be anchoredby returning starterCody Martin, whogarnered first teamAll-District honorslast year alongthe defensive line.Martin will be joinedby newcomers Lupe
Valdez, Cody Smithand Matt Chapa.
Sophomore quarter-back Kolby Kitchenswill take over undercenter, mainly becauseWalters believes hisability to throw willopen things up offen-sively.
“Kolby’s ability is to be ableto throw the ball. Robbie’s(Zendejo) ability is to run the ball.us having the ability to throw isgoing to get rid of the eight men inthe box that people ran against uslast year. They aren’t going to beable to do that this year.”
Adding Zendejo to an alreadytalented skill position corp adds anexplosive element to the Pirates’spread attack. Zendejo and return-ing first-team All-District runningback Zach Custer will be joinedby power back Lemuel Ramirez todominate the lion’s share ofoffense touches. Receivers JaredVelasco, Robert Cox and WilliamPark will also handle the ball mul-tiple times from multiple parts ofthe offense and special teams.
The keys to offensive success forthe Pirates will depend largely onKitchens’ arm and Zendejo’s andCuster’s legs.
“Custer is a speed guy, and we’llhave Denver McCutcheon as hisbackup,” Walters said. “When we
run our two backs, we’ll have Lemueland Robbie back there. Robbie is moreshifty and Lemuel is more of a powerrunner.”
new defensivecoordinator AndrewCorpus will also berelying on technique andspeed to help with a lackof size defensively. Walterssaid that the defense will fea-ture stunts, blitzes and varyingcoverage schemes to force theaction.
‘”We are going to run multiple cover-ages, and be able to show different cov-erages than we are running. We’ll bequick up front, but we’ll have to playsolid technique. We’ll use quickness, speed and technique. We are going tohave to get some take-aways and takesome chances.”

position vacated by the graduation ofJuan Angel, sophomore Craig Jacobs hasclaimed the job and shown animpressive leg. Zendejo willhandle punting duties again, and his playmaking abilityallows Walters severaloptions, especially in fourth-and-short situations.
As with many smallschools, depth is the biggestissue facing the Pirates over along season, and injuries, especially to key players whooften play both offense anddefense, could derail the season. Waltersis proud of the 39 boys who came out forfootball, but that compares to 73 and 57 atdistrict rivals Mason and Harper, respec-
tively. Center Point is the smallest schoolenrollment-wise in the district.
One of the stories that came from lastspring’s uIL redistricting was the moveof Center Point into a powerhouseDivision 1 District 14-A that includespre-season district champion favorite and
defending state champion Mason,as well as three teams — Harper,Junction and Ozona — that allmoved down from Class 2A. Thedistrict also includes always toughBrackettville.
“It’s going to be tough, but allthose teams are really just like weare,” Walters said. “They are 16-,17-, 18-year-old kids, and they puttheir pants on one leg at a time. The only real difference is thattheir numbers are a lot better than
us. We’ve been pushing our kids that justbecause Mason has a horseshoe on theirhelmet, they’re not gods. They areteenage boys like us.”

A2011 campaign decimated by injuries sawSchreiner struggle to a disappointing 3-15 over-all finish and a 2-11 mark in American
Southwest Conference play, but the Lady Mountaineersare hoping to turn their fortunes around this fall.
Senior defender Desiree Frausto, an All-ASC honor-able mention selection in 2011, is back to help bolsterthe Mountaineers’ defense, which gave up just over threegoals per game on average last fall.
Senior Amanda Moon, a four-year starter, will headlinethe Mountaineers’ offensive attack, and fellow seniorsLacey Warner and Veronica Kloss should add additionalfirepower.
Returning junior keeper Lizeth De La Torre recorded88 saves in goal in 2011.
Asolid season in 2010 had many fans expectingSchreiner to compete for an AmericanSouthwest Conference postseason berth in 2011,
but the Mountaineers struggled last fall, capping theiryear at 4-13 overall and going 4-9 in ASC action incoach Paul Hayes’ 10th season at the helm.
Schreiner will try and improve on those numbers thisyear with a lineup that includes returning All-ASC hon-orable mention senior Kelan Robinson, as well as return-ing veterans Jorge Ramos, Ivan Benitez, Gio Benitez,Tim Martinez, Trevor Brown, Cody Moles, nathanielOlmos and David Machado.
The Mountaineers no. 1 objective this fall is to scoremore goals. Six of Schreiner’s losses in 2011 came by asingle goal.
