Lady Blue Devil headvolleyball coach JessicaMerrill hopes hard workand determination from herteam will pay off in 2012.

Brevard returns justone senior on a team ladenwith juniors and sopho-mores, many of whomhave spent the offseasonplaying club volleyball tosharpen their skills. Eventhe ones who haven’tplayed club ball havestayed in shape playingother sports.

That will be keywhen the Lady Blue Devilstake the floor this season.

“If they can get thatdetermination and team-work going early, theyshould be successful,”Merrill said. “We have a lotof talent and we have a lotof natural ability. Andthey’ve been working real-ly hard in the offseason.”

Mother Nature hasalso been kind to the LadyBlue Devils.

“We’ve grown inevery position,” Merrillsaid. “We’ve got verystrong blocking [as aresult.]”

Rising senior TealParker will anchor the mid-dle and outside as one ofthe strongest Lady BlueDevils on the roster.

“We’re looking forleadership from her,”

Merrill said. “We need herto be our go-to hitter.”

Joining Parker alongthe front will be rising junior (and returning var-sity player) KandaceKreigsman.

“Kandace hasincreased her vertical jumpand has really developedinto a hitter,” Merrill said.

Twins Caitlyn andLauren Murray return tothe back row to join HunterParrish for what should bea potent Lady Blue Devildefense.

“Those three shouldmake a solid back row forus,” Merrill said.

Rachel Cassell, a jun-ior, returns at setter, whichis the quarterback of thevolleyball team.

“Rachel alwaysshows up ready to play,”Merrill said. “She cameback the same Rachel weknew, but better.”

Peyton Bailey, a ris-ing junior, will spellCassell at setter and pro-vide a hitting option forBrevard.

Ten players on theroster give Merrill threesubs plus a libero to shuttlein and out. The Lady BlueDevils will sport either a 5-1 or 6-2 look, depending onthe rotation. A 6-2 set putstwo setters at opposite endsof the rotation. The 5-1

maximizes hitting as justone setter takes the floor.

“The girls are matureenough and skillful enoughto do that day-to-day,”Merrill said.

Merrill also knowsthat passing is the key, asthat puts the setter in posi-tion to set up the hitters.

“They know they canhit the ball,” Merrill said.“The hitting is natural tous.”

Conference Outlook

The Lady Blue Devilsare in the unenviable posi-tion of being in perhaps thebest volleyball conferencein western North Carolina,if not the state, playingalongside perennial statecontender West Henderson.

In fact, the splitnature of the 3-A/2-AWestern North CarolinaAthletic Conference putspressure on the Lady BlueDevils each and everynight of the league sched-ule. But it also alleviatesthe pressure of having todefeat the larger 3-Aschools in order to reachthe playoffs.

“There are teams theywant to beat and there areteams they have to beat,”Merrill said. “But we haveto prepare for all of them. The 2-A games are must-

win, but we want to win the3-A games, too.

“We need to be just asexcited and pumped up forthe East Henderson gameas we are the West game,”she added.

In the 2-A ranks,North Henderson has comeon strong as of late. Thatleaves Smoky Mountain,Pisgah and Brevard to bat-tle it out from there.

“We’re excited,”Merrill said. “We’ve got alot of high expectations. We’d love the communityto come out and support thegirls and cheer them on.That’s my goal — to havethem come out and followthe girls. It means a lot.”

About The Coaches

Merrill enters herfourth year as head coachof the Lady Blue Devils. She was a 2004 graduate ofRosman High School and amember of their 2002 State

Championship squad. Sheattended Brevard Collegeand was a two-sport athletethere as well, splitting timeon the volleyball court andbasketball team.

Joining Merrill andjunior varsity coach CoreyEmory this season is MaryRamey, a long-time fixture

at Rosman.“She’s a great voice

to have in the gym,”Merrill said. “She’s one ofthe best motivators I’veever seen and is passionateabout the game. We’rehappy to have her.”

Determination And Teamwork Key For Lady Blue Devils The Lady Blue Devils are off to a 2-0 start in 2012.

Expectations are highfor the Lady Tiger volley-ball team, despite beingtwo years removed fromback-to-back state runner-up seasons.

Juniors constitute themajority of the roster of 11(with two seniors, onesophomores) who won theSmoky Mountain Con-ference tournament in 2011and advanced to the thirdround of the 1-A playoffs.

Second year headcoach Amanda McCallknows they are on every-body’s radar.

“We’re going to begood, but we’re not goingto give away too much (inthis interview),” McCallsaid. “But it’s not really asecret. Everybody knowswhat we’ve got.”

What the Lady Tigershave is plenty of experi-ence, starting with setterand right-side hitter BayleeBagwell, now in her thirdand final year with theLady Tiger varsity team. She missed a season due toinjury.

“We’re still trying tofigure out how to redshirther,” McCall said. “Weneed to find her anotheryear of eligibility.

“We’re strong on theright side and we’re smarton the right side.”

India Lewis, a 5-2defensive specialist, cameout for the Lady Tigers hersenior year.

“She’s on her fourthday,” McCall joked. “I’mokay with two seniors thisseason.”

The junior class ofeight features a pair of near6-footers in Jenah McCalland Brianna Galloway, who missed most of lastseason with a torn ACL.

“We expect a lot ofblocking out of her thisseason,” McCall said ofMcCall. “We’ll be strongin the middle.

“Brianna’s just back,”McCall added. “She’s justpower. She’s stronger thanshe was last year.”

Morgan Sisk, an out-side hitter, joins HannahReese on the outside.

“Morgan played clubball in the offseason,”McCall said. “She’s proba-bly 100 percent better thanlast year — consistent andconfident.”

Reese will move tothe outside this year afterrotating through the middlein 2011 due to Galloway’sinjury. Morgan Sisk willjoin her on the right side.

“We can use Reesethere and we need herthere,” McCall said.“She’ll be competitive on

the outside.”Candace Petit, a right-

side hitter and setter, con-tinues to impress, especial-ly at the Lady Tigers’ firstscrimmage.

“For not playing clubvolleyball, she just doesn’tlose it,” McCall said. “Shejust gets stronger everyyear.”

Bethany Green,Morgan Hoxit, BrookeReese and LaurenMahoney will anchor apotent Lady Tiger defense.

“Brooke led westernNorth Carolina in digs lastyear,” McCall said. “Andso far, she’s on the righttrack.”

The Lady Tigersknow, from the MildredPowell era to their newcoach, that defense andpassing is the bedrockupon which good volley-ball is built.

“We spend a lot oftime in our gym workingon serve, serve-receive anddefense,” McCall said.“They always say ‘we wantto hit, we want to hit.’

“I always tell them ifyou can do those threethings, the hitting willcome.”

McCall said she plansto speed up the Lady Tigerson offense and get them tohit to “smarter” areas of the

court. They will also mixup some different servingstyles.

Preseason Preview

The Lady Tigers haveput in a tough scrimmageschedule, facing the likesof North and EastHenderson, Franklin,Watauga and Huff HighSchools. In that scrim-mage, Rosman won 4-of-6and tied one match.

Their next stop will bean all-day event atAsheville ChristianAcademy against more ofthe top talent in westernNorth Carolina. Thencomes a short pre-confer-ence schedule against traditional power Enka, and local rival, Brevard.

All of those matches tookplace before publication ofthis issue. And the LadyTigers historically have lit-tle time to prepare for agrueling Smoky MountainConference schedule.

Conference Outlook

“ C h a m p i o n s h i p , ”McCall said, not bashfulabout where she expectsthe Lady Tigers to end upin the fall.

The rest of the SmokyMountain Conferenceshould be playing catch-up,as last year’s regular-sea-son champion Murphy lostmost of their players tograduation.

Swain is always athorn in the side of SMCvolleyball teams.

“They’re well-coached,” McCall said.“You can’t ever take themlightly.”

Andrews andRobbinsville may alsocompete for one of the topfour slots, with the rest ofthe conference filling in thebasement, according toMcCall.

About The Coach

McCall enters her sec-ond year as head coach ofthe Lady Tigers. Prior tothat, she was a four-yearassistant with long-timehead coach MildredPowell. McCall played at Western CarolinaUniversity and for EastHenderson High School.

2012

The Blue Devils return acrop of seniors for the 2012season, presenting headcoach Jeff Bailey with acurious mix of veteransand newcomers on the ros-ter of 25.

Numbers are up fromlast year, but many ofBailey’s returning playerstook off a year or morefrom football, but decidedto come out for their finalseason of eligibility. That’sleft him with a bit of a shellgame, moving playersaround and switching roles.

“We’ve still got a lot ofkey areas to be deter-mined,” Bailey said.“Especially on offense.”

Last year’s quarterbackgraduated and another holeopened up in the backfieldwhen a player was declaredacademically ineligible.

That is one reason whyTre Pope, last year’s part-time QB, has been workingout as a receiver.

“He’s athletic and cando various things,” Baileysaid. “He’s a good, hard-working kid.”

Hank Smith, the BlueDevils’ third baseman lastyear, has stepped up to play

football this fall. He’llbring athleticism to thebackfield and has beenworking out at quarterback.

“Hank’s got a tremen-dous arm,” Bailey said.“It’s just all the little tech-nical things you have tolearn.”

Returning at fullback isShawn Harper, one of thestrongest members of theBlue Devil squad. Ondefense, Harper will moveto defensive end from line-backer.

“He’s pretty stout,”Bailey said. “He’s also anexperienced player thatgives us what you want in asenior.”

Michael Carpenter alsoreturns with plenty ofarrows in his quiver. Hecan play running back/full-back, tailback or widereceiver. On defense, he’lllikely play outside line-backer, Bailey said.

Also in thereceiver/defensive backcorps is Bolt Bishop, returning from an injury, and Mitchell Roth, who iscoming back after anabsence of a couple years.

Kevin Borgia, another

senior, returns with experi-ence as a quarterback, receiver and defensiveback.

“Kevin’s going to helpus in the secondary — wejust have to find him a spoton the defense,” Baileysaid.

J.B. Carnahan, a soccerplayer, and Austin Roberts,a kicker, have committed toplay for the Blue Devilsthis season. Carnahan willhave to split his attentionwith a potent Blue Devilsoccer team.

Another returning sen-ior, James McJunkin, returns to his spot on spe-cial teams.

“We look for some goodplaying time out of him,”Bailey said.

The Blue Devils alsoreturn six experiencedplayers to the offensive anddefensive lines.

Jalen Wilkes playedboth sides of the ball forBrevard last year and willlikely do so again.

“Jalen was honorablemention all-conference,”Bailey said. “He’s playedwith us since his sopho-more season.”

Gus McCall returns atthe offensive line and linebacker corps.

“He’ll help us on bothsides of the ball,”

Bailey added. (Continued on pg. 5)

Will McDaris playedboth lines for the BlueDevils before being side-lined with an injury. Baileyexpects his return to addneeded depth on offenseand defense.

Austin Owen and JesseSmith return at tight endand defensive line for theBlue Devils, while TannerMoore returns to one of the“to be determined” slots.

“Tanner’s got a lot ofability — we’ve just got toput him in the right place,”Bailey said.

Already, Bailey likessome of what he sees fromhis Blue Devils, praisingtheir performances on justthe second official day ofpractice.

“Day two was certainlya lot better than day one, which is good,” Baileysaid. “You should showimprovement.

“It’s a good group ofkids. I like their work andtheir attitudes.”

Bailey said there is alearning curve for thereturning players who tooktime off. Some of them willbe put in positions differentfrom the last time they tookthe field. Right now, Baileyis assessing their strengthsrelative to their playingpositions. He will makeadjustments accordingly.

One area Bailey likesthe looks of is on the line.

“A couple of the guyshave been in the systemand have significant expe-rience,” Bailey said. “You

can always tweak themaround, but we feel likewe’ve got a good mixturethere.”

The defensive line islikewise established, headded.

Preseason Look

When the season beginson Aug. 17 at home againstOwen, the Blue Devils willknow pretty quickly where things stand andwhat needs improvement.Brevard has one of thetoughest non-conferenceschedules in the area.

“We could get it handedto us, or we could pullsome of them out,” Baileysaid.

After Owen comes a tripto Polk, with an Aug. 31date against defending 1-AA champion Murphy at Western CarolinaUniversity.

“We’ll learn a lot aboutourselves in preparing forconference,” Bailey said.“And it ought to be fun forour kids to play atWestern.”

The game against the Bulldogs eliminatesBrevard’s open date, whichjust gives them anotherweek of play to prepare.

“The kids want to play,”Bailey said. “They don’tlike having an open week.Plus, we can pull thejayvees up for the gamesince they’ll have an off-week. The new staff atWestern has been hos-

pitable and ready to helpout.”

Brevard finishes up thenon-conference part of theschedule against Mitchell,a rising power in the north-ern Blue Ridge mountains.

Conference Outlook

The Blue Devils returnfor another gauntlet in theWestern North CarolinaAthletic Conference, com-prised of 3-A HendersonCounty Schools (East andWest), Franklin andTuscola; and 2-A Pisgah,Smoky Mountain andNorth Henderson.

“East Henderson looksto be the front runner,”Bailey said.

The Eagles return afourth-year starter at quar-terback and also have sizeand speed coming back. Asalways, they simply reloadwith a plethora of athletes.

“They’re the clear-cutfavorite,” Bailey said.

After that, the WNCACis a huge question mark, asSmoky Mountain andFranklin (two of last year’sfront runners) graduatedbig numbers. Tuscola andNorth Henderson have newcoaches. Bailey is certainthat archrival Pisgah willalso be improved for 2012.

“That’s one of thedownsides of not having ajayvee team last year,”Bailey said. “You used tocould look down the roadand see what kind of play-ers to expect.”

The Blue Devils did notfield a junior varsity squadin 2011, deciding becauseof numbers and emptypositions to merge themwith the varsity squad. There will be a jayvee pro-gram this year, however.

About The CoachAnd Staff Changes

Bailey returnsfor his third yearat the helm of theBlue Devils, who came onstrong to fin-ish last sea-son. Theyd e f e a t e dN o r t hHendersonand Pisgahin a pair ofhigh-scoringaffairs to earn a2-A playoff datewith eventual staterunner-up Lincolnton.

Bailey is a 1988 gradu-ate of Brevard High andplayed for Mars Hill.

A trio of coaches jointhe staff for 2012 — formerRosman Tigers JakeRaines, Wesley Whitmanand Cody Ashe. All three

are also fulltime in

the classroom.Bailey said he hopes

having the three in the hall-ways will encourage par-ticipation in the future.

“We’re excited aboutgetting them and havingthem teach on the staff,”Bailey added.

2012

There is one recurringtheme when Rosman Highhead football coachFreddie Whitman talksabout his 2012 Tiger team— hard work.

He still has numbers— 30-plus —  but a vastmajority of them have paidin sweat and pain duringthe offseason.

“We’ve got 30-someplayers and 25 have beenhere all summer, workinghard,” Whitman said. “I’mvery pleased. We’re awhole lot stronger than wewere last year. We’restronger and faster and thekids have bought into whatwe’re doing.

“They’ll see the dif-ference on the footballfield and they’ll see the dif-ference in how we play.”

Along with all thehard work, plenty of play-ers have come out for the

Tigers in 2012, givingWhitman a plethora ofchoices at a variety ofspots. He estimates thatseven players will onlytake the field when theTigers are on defense. Thatwill give them a rest if theyend up being needed whenRosman has the ball.

Even more beneficial, those numbers include 20players from last season, nine of them returning sen-iors.

“We’ve got a greatsenior class,” Whitmansaid.

The senior class isheaded up (literally andfiguratively) by quarter-back and tailback DuranScruggs, a 1,000-yardrusher and all-conferenceselection last season.

“We expect a lot outof Duran this season,”Whitman said.

Rejoining the back-field in 2012 is fullbackBlaise McCall, whoblocked for a pair of 1,000-yard rushers and picked up500-plus yards himself, splitting time at the posi-tion during his junior year.McCall has put in lots oftime on the weights in theoff-season.

“Blaise is probablyone of the strongest peoplein our conference,”Whitman said. “He maxedout at 370 pounds on thebench. He’s also one of thebest defensive ends in ourconference.”

Caleb Rice, another1,000-yarder, tore an ACLlate in the season, but isrecovering well, Whitmansaid. Rice missed beingname all-Smoky MountainConference by a singlevote.

Brett Sisk, another of

the walking wounded, broke his leg early last sea-son but is expected to con-tribute to a potent Tigeroffensive attack.

Lane Barnett, a tightend, was an all-conferenceoffensive tackle.

“He’s going to leadour line,” Whitman said.

Austin Curto, anotherlineman, put in the neededoff-season work andimpressed his coachingstaff.

“Austin dropped 20pounds and added 30 to hisbench press,” Whitmansaid.

Christian Davis, another senior, turns insome impressive numbers.

“His bench press isway up there, he runs a 4-9and squats the world,”Whitman said. “We expecthim to be a two-way playerfor us.”

Blake Burgess, thebiggest Tiger on the rosterat 6-4, 320 pounds, addsneeded bulk and strength towhat should be a potentdefensive line.

“We expect big thingsout of him on the defensiveside,” Whitman said.

Rounding out theclass of nine seniors is SamJohnson, who has made thetransition from linebackerto secondary effortlessly, mostly due to the knowl-edge of the game.

“He’s a smart kid andhe plays the game reallywell,” Whitman said. “Heplays like his 250 pounds, but he’s only 160.”

Backing up the sen-iors is a solid junior classthat should contribute tothe Tigers’ success in 2012: • Chase Brooks at quar-terback, running back, receiver and outside line-

backer;• Josh Diaz at tight endand linebacker;• Corey Holden at widereceiver;• Austin Anders in thebackfield and safety;• Caleb Perry, StetsonCauble (linebacker), DavisShelton, Coleman Daves (a6-8, 300-pound lineman),

With that many suc-cessful returning playersand Rosman’s history, there is little doubt whatthe Tigers have in store formost teams: line up and runthe ball at you.

“I think we’ve got alot of weapons we canuse,” Whitmans aid. “Wehad 400 yards rushing onthe state champs (Murphy). And our offensive line is alot stronger than last year— I’d say at least 30pounds per man. (Continued on pg. 8)

2012

And we’ve got oneof the biggestdefensive lines inthe state.”

The lineruns from 230pounds up to

a pair of3 0 0 -

p lus

pounders .And for thefirst time in

many years,the Tigers will

put up somespeed.

“We’ve just got toplay with confidence

up front,” Whitmanadded.

After a pair of scrim-mages at Easley, S.C. andWest Henderson, the Tigerswill embark on a four-game non-conferenceschedule that includes 3-ANorth Henderson, a pair ofaggressive mountainsquads in MountainHeritage and Madison, and

magnet school ThomasJefferson.

“They’re very sound foot-ball teams,” Whitman said, adding that none of themare state-champion quality. The Tigers will see plentyof that in the SMC, startingon Sept. 14 against defend-ing champ Murphy.

Conference Outlook

The aforementionedMurphy Bulldogs won the1-AA title, but lost theirquarterback to graduation.Whitman still expects themto be in the hunt again.

“Murphy’s got a lot ofspeed,” Whitman said.“Their defense and offensegot better as the year wenton.”

Their neighbors upthe road in Swain Countyhave also reloaded for2012.

The Maroon Devilsare preseason number-onein 1-A polls, despite losing21 players to graduation. They added a top widereceiver prospect fromCherokee.

“Their junior classwas so good,” Whitmansaid of Swain.

The rest of the confer-ence should be a dogfight, but Whitman will make nopredictions.

“I’d like to think wecan play with all of them,”Whitman said.

The key, as always, isball-control, something theTigers had trouble with attimes last season.

“We didn’t always

finish our drives,”Whitman said. “We’ve gotto hang onto the dang foot-ball. We have to keeprolling with it and keeprunning our offense to limittheir touches.

“If we’re rollingteams they’ll start to panic‘cause they don’t knowwhen they’re going to getthe football back.”

Whitman hopes thatwill lead to offensive mis-takes from his opponents, aiding the Tigers’ defense.

About The Coach

Whitman is in histhird season as head coachof the Tigers, but is a fix-ture on the Rosman side-lines, serving for more than20 years alongside Jim Foxas the defensive coordina-tor.

The Tigers are comingoff one of their most suc-cessful seasons in recentmemory, advancing to thesecond round of the 1-A

playoffs, where they lost aheartbreaker at home toAndrews by a single touch-down.

A graduate of MarsHill College, Whitmanplayed for the Tigers from1982-1984, when Rosmanreached the semi-finalsthree years in a row and thefinals one of those years. He has coached baseballfor 15 years, wrestling forthree years and did a stintas a basketball coach.

2012

The Brevard HighSchool boys’ soccer teamhas all the ingredients for arecipe of success in 2012— experience, talent anddetermination.

Head coach ErikWahus returns 12 seniorsand seven juniors to thesquad this year, but moreimportantly, they workwell together.

“We’ve got a lot ofnumbers out now, which isawesome,” Wahus said.“We had a big group offreshman (four years ago)who have played togetherfor awhile. The kids arereally focused, workingout twice a week playingpick-up games on thepractice field or whereverthey could find a place toplay.

“They seem to havethe right attitude, too, especially coming off athree-win season.”

The Blue Devils lostjust two players last sea-son, one on defense and

the keeper, but return plen-ty to fill in any gaps.

Austin Robertsreturns at defense to bol-ster that end of the field.

“Austin was one ofmy anchors last year ondefense,” Wahus said.“This year he’ll play a dif-ferent role, holding themidfield at the top of thedefense. He’s a strong, solid player.”

Caleb Hall givesWahus an option to puthim anywhere on the field.

“I expect even moreout of him this season,”Wahus said. “He’s an all-around good player whocan play pretty much any-where you put him.”

J.B. Carnahan alsoreturns on defense to playthe center of the field.

“He’s quick andsolid and knows thegame,” Wahus said.

Andrew Banks alsoreturns to a defensive-mid-field spot.

“Andrew is capable

of doing anything we askof him in the midfield,”Wahus said.

Shane Williams, amidfielder, is one of themore tenacious BlueDevils.

“He’s small but he’stough,” Wahus said. “Hereally goes after the ball.”

Tristan Pelletier willsee playing time insideand outside from the mid-fielder’s spot and Wahuslooks to him to make effi-cient passes.

“He distributes theball really well. He’s talland keeps his head up,”Wahus said.

Jack Williams slidesinto the goalkeeper posi-tion vacated by 2012 grad-uate Juan Mascaro.

“Jack played behindJuan last year, but when hestepped in he did a goodjob for us,” Wahus said.

Colin Fenner is oneof the seniors frequentlyseen a local pick-upgames, and his coach said

it shows.“Colin has really

improved from last year,”Wahus said. “He reallycame out this year wantingto do well.”

Senior forwardTommy Wakefield plays afearless brand of soccerfor the Blue Devils.

“Tommy’s imp-roved,” Wahus said. “Hesees the entire field andhe’s not afraid to take theshot or make the pass.”

Senior AndrewShaw gives the BlueDevils skilled depth at theforward position.

“He’s got a goodfoot,” Wahus said. “Heshoots the ball reallywell.”

Rounding out thesenior class is KevinElliott, a newcomer to theBlue Devil squad.

“Kevin’s one ofthose kids who is a coach’sdream,” Wahus said. “Hedoes whatever you ask ofhim. He plays his role and

does what he’s supposedto.”

The keys to the BlueDevils’ success this yearwill be the little details.

“We have to play asa team and play smallball,” Wahus said. “We’vegot to work on possession, passing and working theball down the field as ateam.

“We also have towork on our opportunitiesto score, and we can dothat if everybody playstheir role and does whatthey have to do.”

Conference Outlook

In the split 3-A/2-AWestern North CarolinaAthletic Conference, much of the soccer talentis stacked in favor of thelarger schools like WestHenderson and EastHenderson.

“East Henderson isprobably the team to beat, but West Henderson will

be strong,” Wahus said. The other schools —

Tuscola and Franklin—  are heavily football-focused, along with 2-APisgah. Consequently,Wahus describes them as“question marks.”

That means the BlueDevils will have to beatSmoky Mountain and/orNorth Henderson .

“It’ll be interesting,”Wahus said. “Looking atour conference, we oughtto do well.”

About The Coach

Wahus enters histhird year as head coach ofthe Blue Devils. Prior tothat he was a three-yearhead coach of the jayveesquad. He has taught atBrevard High School for10 years.

Despite last year’sthree wins, the BlueDevils advanced to the 2-A soccer playoffs, wherethey traveled to Owen.
