As warm summer days slowly begin the transition to crisp fall nights, the Forest Preserves of Cook County will soon become a palette of beautiful autumn hues. There are numerous opportunities throughout fall to get outdoors and experience the Forest Preserves and enjoy all the season has to offer.

New this season, the Forest Preserves is joining the Let’s Move! Outside initiative. All throughout the Preserves, there are opportunities for youth and families to explore the outdoors. From playing and learning to working and serving, people of all ages are encouraged to move outside and enjoy our public lands.

And in celebration of National Public Lands Day on September 24, the Forest Preserves is hosting a party and everyone is invited. Attendees can enjoy fun outdoor activities at each of our five new and revitalized campgrounds. Daytime activities are free and open to the public, and attendees can join evening parties that will include food, drink and fun. Learn more on page 17.

If you and your young adventurers have been tracking PBS Kids’ Nature Cat through the Forest Preserves, be sure to pick up a tracking kit at any of our Nature Centers or special events. The kit encourages youngsters to experience some of Nature Cat’s favorite activities while discovering new sites throughout the Preserves.

Lastly, if the warm, vibrant colors of fall have you feeling inspired, be sure to check out the various art-related events and programs taking place at some of our Nature Centers. Visitors can participate in painting, poetry writing and more.

We hope to see you in the Preserves!

Sincerely,

Toni Preckwinkle, President

Established one hundred years ago, the Forest Preserves of Cook County is one of the oldest forest preserve systems in the nation, maintaining nearly

70,000 acres of open land for the education, pleasure and recreation of the public. We strive to protect and restore the county’s diverse

ecosystems, so all our unique native plants and animals can live and thrive. Each year, millions of people use these lands and facilities to enjoy or study nature, bicycle, hike, fish, cross-country ski, picnic, golf, canoe or

simply relax in a large preserve that leaves urban life behind.

If you have time, skills and enthusiasm to give, consider volunteering with the Forest Preserves. Our thousands of acres provide endless opportunities for

individuals and groups to get involved. From removing invasive species to picking up litter to monitoring birds and other animals, volunteering is fun

and meaningful. To find out more, visit fpdcc.com/volunteer.
