S Senior Lunch Program

Presented by SeniorServ and the City of Yorba Linda Make new friends while enjoying a hot and nutritious lunch at the Yorba Linda Senior Lunch Program! Lunch is served Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 11:30 a.m. and Wednesdays at 11:15 a.m. There is a $3.00 suggested donation for guests ages 60 and older and a $5.00 fee for guests 59 and younger. Lunch is available on a first come, first served basis and we recommend guests arrive 30 minutes early to reserve their lunch. Check-in for lunch begins at 9:30 a.m. Coffee and tea are also

available for purchase at that time for those who want to come early to socialize. A monthly lunch menu is available at the Community Center front counter or the City of Yorba Linda website.

Senior Grocery Program 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month, 8:30 a.m. In partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, the Yorba Linda Parks and Recreation Department offers the Senior Grocery Program, a twice-a-month “pop-up market” where senior attendees can select from various grocery items, including fresh produce, dairy, meats, eggs, and canned goods! No registration is required and there are no income requirements. Thursdays, January 5 & 19, February 2 & 16, and March 2 & 16.

Due to new CA legislation, we are no longer able to distribute plastic bags; please bring your own reusable bags.

Since heavy or bulky items may be distributed, at least 3-4 reusable grocery bags are recommended per person. A personal cart is also recommended.

Attendees will receive a number as they arrive. A number lottery will then be conducted and participants will receive food as their number is called. Doors open and numbers are distributed at 7:30 a.m. Distribution of food begins at approximately 8:30 a.m. Attendees should enter through the Imperial patio doors.

Refrigerated/perishable items will be distributed. Plan to head straight home to distribute your refrigerated items.

Distributed items are at, or close to, their “sell by” date. Items should be checked carefully for freshness before consuming.

Tips for Success at the Senior Grocery Program:

By Jack Patrona, Senior Club Treasurer

One of the more prolific, but silent, abuses of the elderly may actually come from within their own family. Too often, a trusted caregiver (commonly an adult child) will quietly begin to use a senior’s bank account almost as their own or will even sell a parent’s asset(s), keeping the proceeds for themselves! They may even feel entitled because of the care they are giving. Without an advanced written voluntary agreement made while of sound mind and not under any kind of pressure, there is no justification for that behavior. It is theft. The more affluent seniors are at greater risk because they are more likely to live longer. But modest income or net worth is no guarantee of safety. If you feel that this may be happening to you or someone you know, you may need to contact Adult Protective Services in your county. APS agencies investigate reports of abuse of elders and dependent adults who live in private homes, apartments, hotels or hospitals. The contact number for your county’s APS can be found at http://www.cdss.ca.gov/agedblinddisabled/PG2300.htm. General information about adult protective services can be found at http://www.napsa-now.org/get-help/ . The phone number for Adult Protective Services in Orange County is (800) 451-5155 (24-hour hotline).

Healthy Balance with Dan Balance is a control system that enables us to maintain our vertical position in space. When a person says “I lost my balance” what is actually being described is a breakdown in interaction among various components of the balance system. The tangible sense of “balance” that we experience is a synergy that results from the combination of balance system components. A basic understanding of the balance control system can help us lower the risk of falling. This class will address factors involved with falling, how balance works, and techniques to keep you safe and mobile. For more information, please visit www.DanLayne.com. 2017 Senior Club Executive Board

Dear Members, It looks as though we may have a wet winter. We will probably have one because no one said we were! We have a great year planned so far, including our luncheons, entertainment, trips, and several other programs. Remember, anyone over fifty years old is invited to join the Senior Club and is encouraged to get involved.

“Give the World the Best You’ve Got” People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building someone could destroy overnight; build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; be good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; give the world the best you’ve got anyway. You see, in the final analysis between you and your god, it was never between you and them anyway.

Poem by Kent M. Keith Yes, it is very important to get involved and do your best in everything you do. We are all part of this large family of seniors. Wally Stairs 2017 Club President
