Gold Star Mothers and Family Day Sunday 29 September 2019
During World War I, military family households would put a Service Flag in the windows of their
homes. The Service Flag would have a deep Blue Star and/or a Gold Star for each family member
that was serving our country. A Blue Star represented those who were alive and a Gold Star
honored those who had lost their life.
In 1928, twenty-five mothers who resided in Washington, D.C., created a national organization
known as American Gold Star Mother’s Inc. In 1936, the last Sunday in September was designated
as the Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, which has been observed each year by a presidential
proclamation.

Hello Friends and Family,
This week, we kicked off The Legend of 1000 Combat Paper Cranes in 2019 at Pub 'N Sub in Reno and at Code Cof-
fee! Thanks to all who attended, it was great catching up with everyone. DJD Foundation, invites you to fold Combat
Paper origami cranes at Nevada Humanities' 6th Annual Lit Crawl, Unabridged. Please drop by to help Gene and Paula
fold cranes at Nevada Museum of Art, V between 3:30 and 5:30 on Saturday, September 14.
But wait! That's not all! You can also hear the stories and poetry of DJD Foundation veterans at 1:30-2:15 at Old
World Coffee, 104 California Ave, Reno, also on September 14! I hope you will leave a little early and catch both experi-
ences, or better yet, spend the whole day. For your convenience I have attached a flier for the Lit Crawl.
I am, again, attaching a flier for our first community discussion program event, known as Duty: War's Impact on
Women, which provides opportunities to share and learn about war and military service and how they impact women and
communities. This event is paired with the Legend of 1000 Combat Paper Cranes. Please join us for this 1st of many
events throughout Nevada. American Legion Post #30, 730 4th Street, Sparks, 6-9PM, Oct.14-16. Complete all three days
to receive a special commemorative gift! Please share this information with your friends and family as this is a fantastic
way to help DJD Foundation get the word out. Don't forget to get your tickets by clicking on the link for each day.
Sign up October 14
A very special thanks goes out to all who volunteered at the Pyramid Lake Sprint Triathlon. Because of your amazing
commitment and hard work, DJD Foundation received a check for $2000.00! Thank you all and especially Jo and Bill
Meacham for making it happen!

Survivor Benefit Plan School Certifications
Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuity payments typically stop for child annuitants covered under SBP when they reach age 18 unless they
are incapacitated.
However, if you attend school full-time (in high school or at an accredited college or university), the SBP annuity payments can continue
until you reach age 22 or otherwise become ineligible.
DFAS has a new, online option for submitting school certification forms.
DFAS created a new online module where students can upload a school certification form through AskDFAS on the DFAS.mil website,
which is also accessible on a mobile browser.
The online submission module is at: https://go.usa.gov/xymaH
To use the new, online module to submit a school certification form, students just need to fill in the required information in the online
screen, and then upload a PDF of their completed and signed DD 2788 - Child Annuitant's School Certification form. This online module
can only accept school certification forms and accompanying documentation. It cannot be used for other types of annuitant documents
or requests.
Students who need to submit school certifications can now receive email reminders from DFAS when school certifications are coming
due.
DFAS is developing new email reminders when it is time to submit school certifications. Student child annuitants who would like to re-
ceive these reminders just need to have a myPay account with a valid email address, and DFAS will email reminders when it is time for
school certifications to be submitted. Information on getting started with myPay is at: https://myPay.dfas.mil
School certifications for child annuitants over age 18 attending college/university full-time. Each semester, we mail a Child Annuitant's
School Certification form (DD Form 2788) to verify you are still enrolled. If we don't receive the form by the end of your school term, we
will suspend payments until we receive a properly completed form.
The Child Annuitant's School Certification form (DD Form 2788) and instructions are available for downloading on our website Forms
page.
School certifications for child annuitants turning age 18 while attending high school or college. Child annuitants over age 18 (and not
incapacitated) must be full-time students to continue receiving SBP annuity payments. A school certification form is sent before the an-
nuitant reaches age 18 to verify the child annuitant's eligibility to continue to receive SBP payments.
We will mail a school certification form to the child annuitant 60-90 days prior to their 18th birthday. The certification form must be
filled out and signed by a parent or guardian, and then signed by a school official, and returned to DFAS prior to the first day of the
month of the child annuitant's birth.
When the school certification form is received for a child annuitant that turns 18 years of age while attending college, we will certify the
child annuitant's eligibility as future intent to continue payment. However, a separate school certification will also be needed at the end
of the semester for validation of their eligibility as a full-time student. School certification forms will also be needed at the end of each of
the following semesters to certify that the child annuitant is a full-time student.
When the school certification form is received for a child annuitant that turns 18 years of age while in high school, we will certify the
child annuitant's eligibility until their high school graduation date or for one year, whichever period is shorter. If the school certification
form is not returned before the first day of the month of the child annuitant's 18th birthday, the annuity payment is suspended until a
properly completed form is received.
If a child annuitant over age 18 does not plan to attend college full-time, their annuity eligibility ends on the date of high school gradua-
tion. If the child annuitant over age 18 plans to attend college full-time within 150 days of the date of their high school graduation, they
should submit an additional school certification form to notify DFAS of their plan to attend college on a full-time basis, which will contin-
ue their annuity eligibility. A school certification form will also be needed prior to the end of the first semester for validation of their
eligibility as a full-time student. School certification forms will also be needed at the end of each of the following semesters to certify that
the child annuitant is a full-time student.
The Child Annuitant's School Certification form (DD Form 2788) and instructions are available for downloading on our website Forms
page. https://myPay.dfas.mil or call 888-332-7411
