From the General Manager

Summer of 2014 was another one in the win column, not just based on what we feel, but

the commentary heard around the club. We can’t thank you enough for your generous support and critical feedback that helps us to shape the daily path of the Club and programming efforts. While now is the time to make the larger shifts and review the directions we are headed, in sum-mer we rely on you to help us make continual daily and hourly refinements in an effort to deliver the experience you want and service levels you expect.

I know I say it each of the last 10 years, but it really was another great summer. The grounds looked better than ever, the tennis was strong, Chef and Lauren delivered a remarkable food, beverage, and service experience. In the Wellness Center article, Joanna highlights many improve-ments that have taken our Spa & Fitness center to new levels. The enthusiasm from the pool, westies, swim team and camp was overflowing.

Not to be forgotten at all are the two incredible captains, Captain Smitty new to Westmoor 1 and our extraordinary Captain Scott, now a veteran and true steward aboard Belle. Both have to be technically proficient, and incredibly service minded all while operating within a very small team. I know there was the occasional service “miss” throughout year but we are making less and less each season. The graph below shows our usage spike for the summer season. The interest-ing note is to remember 18 days before the trend line starts, there are less than 20 employees here and they too ramp up to a roster count of 150 and 15 days after the trend line ends, we are back down in head count. This is Nantucket, but sometimes we forget how incredibly drastic the season is.

Many of you have heard me say why I believe this club, this Westmoor community is so special and so successful: 1.) Well designed and main-tained facilities; 2.) Engaging, service minded and cultured employees who strive to please; 3.) Supportive, fun, energetic members who add to the sense of community of health, wellness and the best of Nantucket. So many clubs that we all know have one attribute, maybe two but it is rare that a club has all three attributes that work at such a high level year after year, and we do. Our collective TWC community keeps improving and although we do miss the mark on occasion we (members and staff) constantly strive to be bet-ter tomorrow than we are today.

I am so excited to be part of this incredible com-munity as we celebrate our 10th anniversary in 2015. Please complete you membership survey, continue your feedback and continue to relive your wonderful memories of summer with us, your family and more so, share those memories with other great families you would like to see enjoying The Westmoor Club experience. With much gratitude,

J. Brent Tartamella

As the Club continues to grow, special events and our regular programming play a huge role

As I reflect back on the summer, what I realize is just how quickly it passes in the whirlwind of

activity that takes place at The Westmoor Club in July and August. Every morning when I arrived at work, it was so refreshing to see the tennis players of all ages concentrating so thoughtfully on their game – away from cell phones and other distractions of daily life. The children’s camps were always busy with fun and engaging activities. It was wonderful to see so many members at the 4th of July celebra-tion with their friends and family all dressed up on a beautiful July day. Our ever evolving Bridge pro-gram was quite successful this summer as we were able to start a Westmoor Bridge Committee and host a very successful and well-attended Bridge Festival with master Bridge player Larry Cohen.

A special thank you to all of our Trial Program members who experienced the Westmoor Club for the first time with fresh eyes and provided valuable insights into the program. Your input helps us offer the best program we can and I am always open to hearing your feedback. I certainly hope to see you as regular members in 2015! Please don’t hesitate to tell your friends about how much fun you’ve had this

past summer and to send them my way if they have any interest in our Trial Membership Program.

As the new Director of Membership this summer, the one thing I didn’t get to do was to personally meet all of you. I hope to meet you soon and I en-courage you to stay at the Clubhouse during the off-season. Both the Clubhouse and Spa are open year round. Nantucket is always a great destination. In the fall, the weather is cooler and less crowded and the bulk of shops and restaurants are still open for business. Winter brings the Christmas Stroll, the Clubhouse Caroling event and gingerbread house making for the children. Spring offers a time of renewal and growth with the beautiful Daffodil Festival as well as spring specials on services and rooms. Keep an eye out for seasonal promotions on our Clubhouse rooms and special events throughout the year.

Hope to see you soon!

Warm regards,

Regina G. Vorce

Food and BeverageThe Westmoor dining experience continues to grow in 2014

2014 was a whirlwind! Consecutively, the Clubhouse Dining Room and Beach Plum saw extraordinary

numbers this season and we cannot thank you enough for your support. We thoroughly enjoyed serving you all and any feedback on this season’s menus and wine program are always encouraged and deeply appreciated.

From a service standpoint, the food & beverage team was blessed to have had a high retention rate, many returning from either John’s Island or The Windsor Club in Vero Beach, Fla, as well as The Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach, Fla. We look forward to welcoming these excellent team members back for the 2015 summer season.

Looking ahead, we can’t wait to welcome you all back next year and celebrating the fourth of July– let’s hope there is no hurricane this season. Later on in the season, we are excited to “la bienvenida a España” for the annual member gala which will be even more colorful, flavor-ful and exciting than this year’s successful Midsummer Night in Cote d’ Azur. Aside from these large events of the season, Chef and I look forward to offering you great food and wine. The wine and oysters event on Wednesdays are extremely popular and we look forward to hosting another extraordinary roster of wineries.

Again, without your support and feedback, we wouldn’t be able to deliver the food and wine that you all so greatly

enjoy! Thank you for dining with us continually this season. We are already looking forward to 2015!

Cheers,

Lauren DiStefano Executive Chef Bruce Sacino

The camp program continues to grow in numbers and quality this season

TWC Day Camps

Another wonderful fun filled summer comes to an end for the Westies camp program.

I want to thank everyone for all your support and for sharing your children with me every day. Your confidence in the program is why we all work so hard to make the summer experience at the Westmoor Club an enjoyable one. Your children are special to all of us involved in the Westies camp programs. My staff and I have truly enjoyed seeing each child grow, learn and smile every day.

Please write to me at the e-mail address below with any suggestions that you may have. Please watch for upcoming newsletters this win-ter and check the website often for camp infor-mation. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at [email protected].

Fall is in the air in Pennsylvania. School has started, but I think about Nantucket every day. The summer flew by and we are already planning

the summer of 2015 with a few changes to make the camp more enjoyable for everyone. I honestly felt that this summer was one of the best in the last 8 years. The camp staff worked hard and the campers were having fun participating in the activities and meeting new friends.

Sincerely,

Annie Lehmann

BelleGet aboard Belle during her fall travels! (See included brochure)

It was another great summer on board Belle!

Fun was had by all. There were many highlights in 2014, but I just want to mention a few that our membership really seemed to enjoy:

The Boston Pops Cruise was the pinnacle mo-ment of our season as a full boat of members and their guests watched the symphony per-form, followed by an amazing performance by the world’s foremost Abba tribute band, and of course the great fireworks display. Mama Mia!

We managed to see whales and a full variety of sea life on our family Whale Watching Cruise in July.

September has been the August we didn’t get as far as the weather was concerned, and we con-tinue to have well-attended brunch, cocktail and dinner cruises through the end of the month.

It is now just about time to switch gears as we head to Boston on September 28th. We will be offering cocktail cruises in Boston, Greenwich, CT and New York City. Belle will also be avail-able for private cruises through the end of October, so be sure to book a charter when we

pass through your neck of the woods. Please take a moment to check out the Belle Fall Travels brochure included in this packet.

So whether it is a get together with friends or a business cruise, please contact us and we hope to see you this fall!

Smooth sailing,

Captain Scott Oliver

Westmoor 1

After writing my weekly report today it brought back lots of fun memories from this season’s

fishing trips.

As a seasoned captain, I still get as or more excited catching fish than some of my customers. I hope my love of the water and its treasures never goes away and I still have the opportunity to continue to share my gifts with old, and new friends.

This is my chance to thank all the folks for my first season fishing on the Westmoor 1, again I’ll reflect on many fond moments, whether it was a youngster with there first scup or a hard fighting large mako shark jumping behind the boat, I hope I was able to help create memories that will last a lifetime.

Here’s to the 2014 season and the promise of many more filled with awesome Nantucket fishing.

A great season of fishing continues thru Columbus Day

Stay tuned as I’ll continue to fill my weekly report with timely happenings on the island throughout the winter. Once again thank -you all for an awe-some summer and the promise of another summer fishing on the Westmoor 1.

Tight Lines,

Captain Doug “Smitty” Smith

Westies build traditions through fun and sportsmanship this year

This year’s Westmoor aquatic season comes to a close with memories of fantastic fun, great

accomplishments and a big thank you to all of our membership who participated in the season.

Your positive comments to me and my staff about the season are deeply appreciated and your thoughtful cards made the 2014 season a memorable one.

Our Westmoor Westies swim team established itself from the beginning as a determined and dedicated group of youngsters. The wonderful events that we conducted in July and August, have given the Westmoor families something to talk about. The entire season brought so many pleasant memories and made a difference in the spirit surrounding The Westmoor Club. The Fire-cracker Swimming Invitational, Pajama Relays, the Mini Olympics, Nick Name Relays and the Sports Awards Dinner, were the talk of the Club and Nantucket.

Our thanks goes out to all the parents who made the effort to get their children to the afternoon practices, the invitational events, Saturday morning mini swim meets, time trials, as well as all those who volunteered to be timers and rib-bon presenters. We could not have done it with-out you.

Our special thanks to the children who have con-tinued the Westmoor tradition of summer fun. We hope that you will take some time to join a winter program and work on your swimming skills so that next summer we will do even better. (We are looking into off-island swim meets next season and more fun for all).

Our Adult Pool was a tremendous hit and the peaceful, quiet and restful atmosphere became a premium experience for many members. Please

let us know how we can continue to provide you with a top notch adult facility.

We will look forward to seeing all of our West-moor Westies back next season, and we hope that you will keep in touch over the off-season at [email protected]. Please look for some special announcements about next year’s team in the coming months.

Our swim lessons were well-received by so many families this season. We will look forward to many more children being part of our lesson program next summer, and the addition of the Sports Camp Aquatics Program was very well received.

The newly formed Mermaid Hour program was so much fun to provide. We hope to have many more students next season. I would also like to thank all the members who helped to make my, and Annie’s, eighth summer here at TWC a very enjoyable one. Your kind-ness is deeply appreciated. Happy fall and we look forward to seeing you all next spring!

Club SportsTennis, Paddle, Squash, and Croquet - a game for every athlete

Yet another great summer has come and gone, and once again I sit and wonder at just how

quickly it all went by!

It is particularly striking right now, as those of us lucky enough to still be on the island have been experiencing some of the best weather we have had in the past few years or longer.

Up to the last, the ladies tennis players have been in strong attendance for the morning clinics and arranged games. I hardly thought it possible after season 2013, but this year we had even more atten-dance than ever!

Cardio tennis got a shot in the arm too, with the ladies showing many men just what is possible! This is sure to be continued on into the future!

The children’s tennis clinics too saw lots of action, and our great team of tennis pros – Keith, Alex, Godwin, Alet, Tim and Willy – kept everyone on their toes.

Apart from our internal tournaments, Westmoor seniors and juniors had matches against the Nan-tucket Yacht Club and the Great Harbor Yacht

Club, splitting the honors with them.

Squash had a first for the Club when a visiting “off island” team came all the way from St. Louis to compete against us in squash doubles. Some of the local restaurants didn’t know what hit them when these boys turned up, as I can attest to first hand!

As ever the squash courts were jammed packed each day with clinics, lessons and competitive play at all levels. Joe and his team were run ragged all season long!

The Nantucket Invitational Croquet tournament was played over Memorial Day Weekend. Alan Wor-den displayed vastly improved form, but was just pipped at the post by Donna Dixon of Houston.

Every weekday morning it was impossible to miss the throng of children enjoying both the Westies and Sport’s Camp activities. Their unbounded exuber-ance is always a thing to see!

As our club matures it is fun to see the younger players starting to dominate across the board, with the possible exception of croquet – and even there the gap is closing between the “old hands” and the youngsters.

So hearty con-gratulations to all our tourna-ment winners, and all players in general for a wonderful sum-mer season!

Best Wishes,

Wayne Davies

The Wellness CenterNantucket native and national triathlon champion joins Club’s staff as he continues to pursue dream

Thank you all for making this summer at The Well-ness Center fun and positive and full energy! The

spa team and I have so enjoyed getting to know you and your families and helping to shape your health and fitness habits. This year we saw a huge jump in the number of young people using the gym, personal train-ers, and taking the teen classes. Families were clearly committed to spending time together enjoying fitness activities. We were fortunate to have offered a few special and unique programs that were so popular that we will continue them year-round. Fencing, with Jed Dupree will be expanded for next season and offered all winter long on select Saturdays. And Meredith Hanson who hosted our painting and wine tastings, will be offering a kids camp all winter as well as some special evenings for adults.

This fall we have decided to take on a special project – many of you met Beau Garufi this summer, he ran teen gym, taught swim class in the adult pool and was occasionally called on to teach the mermaid hour. If you didn’t meet him then you likely read about him as he won both the triathlons on island this summer. Beau is a Nantucket story of skill and determination and we want to help him realize his goal this year of becoming a professional triathlete and as he continues to compete in the professional circuit, pointing him in the direction of the World Triathlon Series.

A native Nantucketer, and completely self-schooled, Beau swam competitively as the team captain and now assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. A year ago, he was recruited out of his first race by Barb Lindquest of the USA Triathlon and be-gan working very seriously toward his triathlete goals. The Westmoor Club was so inspired by his humility, his determination, and his dedication to his dreams that we have agreed to sponsor him for his last two races of 2014 and for the 2015 season. Part of this sponsorship is to help him find the resources he needs to train prop-

erly, specifically he needs a professional running coach who can help him shave his running times to around 5 minutes a mile, and additional corporate sponsors who can help defray costs of travel and equipment. Any suggestions you all may have are welcome, I look forward to hearing your thoughts. You can follow Beau on Facebook or Instagram and we will let you know how he does in these next few critical races.

Some of the greatest joys in life can come through helping others, The Westmoor Club’s strong fitness community is committed to supporting Beau and helping him to reach his goals.

Yours in health,

Joanna
