Our Guidance Staff The guidance staff, which includes three guidance spe-cialists, a registrar, a college & career center specialist, a school counselor, a student support specialist, two psychologists and an administrator, would like to wel-come you to the 2012-2013 school year. We are off to a great start with 2623 students. We look forward to supporting academic, college and career goals for stu-dents so that they will have a positive and successful four years at Edison High School. Welcome to Christina Trujillo. Christina replaces Debby Alms, our new registrar. Christina has a bache-lors degree from Cal State Long Beach in sociology and a master’s degree in counseling from Cal State Domin-quez Hills and a PPS credential. She worked in the Paramount district as a counseling assistant in elemen-tary and middle school and in Anaheim Union District at Kennedy High School. Welcome Christina!

Coastline ROP The 2012-2013 school year is off and running with over 200 Edison students enrolled in ROP classes. ROP benefits those going directly into the work force by developing knowledge and skills, which help stu-dents to qualify for higher paying positions. ROP benefits those con-tinuing on to college by providing a practical hands-on experience related to a particular major. This experi-ence can give students an edge with admissions officers when students apply for impacted programs. ROP helps because ROP reflects a serious interest and a realistic desire to pursue a particular field of study. ROP classes on high school transcripts can be evidence of career ex-ploration and can be used to enhance resumes and en-trance essays. ROP is available to any student 16 years and older and can be taken for elective credit. Edison students enrolled in ROP courses at surround-ing high schools include Administration of Justice, Art of Animation, Baking and Pastries, Careers with Chil-dren, Retail Sales and Merchandising, Computer Aided Drafting, First Responder, Fire Technology, Sports Medicine, Animal Health Care, and Entrepreneurship, to name just a few! DON’T DELAY now is the time to investigate the ROP opportunity! Mrs. Chanel Osbourne Career Center, Rm. 121 (714) 962-1356 ext. 4436

College Application information: UC applications (www.universityofcalifornia.edu) can be sub-mitted (fee $70 per campus) from November 1 – 30. CSU applications (www.csumentor.edu) can be submitted (fee $55 per campus) starting October 1st through November 30th. Most private and out-of-state application deadlines vary from campus to campus. Contact the college to ensure you meet their deadlines. The Common Application (www.commonapp.org) is used to apply to multiple private or out-of-state colleges by using one application. Requires supplemental forms for the Secondary School Report.

All seniors using the Common Application to apply to private or out-of-state colleges should see Mrs. Quay in the College & Career Center in the English hallway in room 121 to pick up and complete the Secondary School Packet of information to be used to complete the required supplemental forms. College admission testing seniors must complete their testing for the UC/CSU systems no later than the December test date. Some CSU schools may not accept the December test results). Juniors should plan to take their SAT and/or ACT tests during the second semester. Refer to the College & Career Center web-site or pick up a schedule of test dates and deadlines in the Col-lege & Career Center in the English hallway in room 121. Verify the testing requirements of the colleges and universities under consideration. Juniors and Sophomores Juniors who are thinking about attending a four-year college should take the PSAT being offered at EHS on Wednes-day, October 17, 2012, 8:00-11:30 am. The PSAT can not hurt a student's chance of admission and juniors who score well may qualify for National Merit Recognition and/or scholarship op-portunities. Sophomores who are thinking about attending a four-year col-lege should also consider taking the PSAT on October 17. Studies show that sophomores who take the PSAT, on av-erage, will score 100 points higher on the SAT than those who do not take the test in their sophomore year. It's like a second practice for the SAT -- one practice in your sophomore year and one in your junior year. Then, you will be that much more prepared for the SAT when you take it in the spring of your junior year.

Financial Aid The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will be available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov in December. The earliest submission date is January 1st with a priority filing date of March 2. All senior students should apply for financial aid regardless of financial background. All students wishing to be considered for SCHOLARSHIPS, GRANTS, WORK STUDY, and/or LOANS must fill out the FAFSA.

The first step to apply for the FAFSA online is for the student and one parent to obtain a PIN number. PIN numbers are o tained at www.pin.ed.gov and used to sign your FAFSA applica-tion online. To receive a CAL GRANT (State money), www.calgrant.org students need to fill out the Cal Grant GPA Information Release form available online in January. Your GPA along with informa-tion from your FAFSA will determine if you will be eligible for CAL GRANTS that can be used at UC, Cal State, California private institutions and California Community Colleges. This form must be submitted to Mrs. Quay by Thursday, February 28, 2013.

Any student applying to private institutions may need to com-plete the CSS/Financial PROFILE at www.collegeboard.com (this can be done now). Check with your colleges of choice for their requirements or for their own forms.

There are several web sites to help you determine if you will be eligible for federal aid. These sites calculate your tax/asset infor-mation and will give you an idea of your expected family contri-bution. Any one of the following web sites will do this calcula-tion: www.collegeboard.com , www.edfund.org , www.fafsa.ed.gov , www.finaid.org .

Edison High School’s Standardized Testing and Reporting In May 2012, 9th, 10th, and 11th graders took the Cali-fornia Standards Tests in Mathematics, English/Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Edison High School’s Academic Performance Index (API) of 872 is outstanding. An API score of 800 is considered exemplary. Congratulations to Edison High School’s students and staff! What is the API (Academic Performance Index)?

The purpose of the Academic Performance Index (API) is to measure the year-over-year growth in academic performance for California schools. The API summarizes a school's stan-dardized test results into a single number. Each school's STAR and CAHSEE results are calculated into a complex formula that assigns the school an API between 200 and 1000 (1000 being the best score). What is the CAHSEE (pronounced Kay-see)? The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE, pro-nounced KAY-see) is a test used to determine whether stu-dents have mastered key skills before graduating from high school. High school students must pass the CAHSEE in order to graduate. The CAHSEE is administered to all grade 10 students on March 12 and 13. The test is divided into two sections: English/ Language Arts and Math. The English/Language Arts portion includes the content standards through grade 10, including vocabulary, reading, and writing strategies and conventions. In addition to answering multiple-choice questions, students write an essay on a specific topic. The Math portion covers academic con-tent standards for grades 6, 7 and algebra I, including: statis-tics, data analysis and probability, number sense, measure-ment, algebra and functions, math reasoning and geometry. The CAHSEE is a pass/fail test, which is not timed. A score of 350 in each area satisfies the state’s requirement to pass the CAHSEE for a high school diploma. Edison High School’s California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) Results. In March , the Class of 2014(current Juniors) took

the California High School Exit Exam for the first time. The Exit Exam tests stu-dents’ abilities in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. Ninety-eight percent of students in the class of 2014 passed the English/Language Arts and ninety-six percent passed the Mathematics portion! Congratulations to the class of 2014 for these out-standing passing percentages. What is the STAR test? Each spring California students in grades 2 through 11 take a series of tests through the Standardized Testing and Re-porting program, more commonly known as STAR. First administered in 1998, the STAR program requires all public schools in California to test students between mid-March and mid-June of every year. The CST (California Standards Tests) are a component of the STAR. The CST’s were de-veloped to measure whether students are mastering the spe-cific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. Students with identified special learning disabilities may take a different version of California assessments known as the CAPA and CMA. These are in lieu of the STAR test. Important Testing Dates

New at EHS

The Drew Brees Foundation in partnership with Dick’s Sporting Goods have teamed up to bench concussions by providing a limited amount of high schools with a one year membership for ImPACT, a computerized neurological exam that allows for athletic trainers and team physicians to establish baseline results for their athletes prior to suffering a concussion. Holli Jackson, Edison High School’s Certified Athletic Trainer, applied for the opportunity and was granted the one year membership. In August, all Edison Football athletes were tested by Holli Jack-son and her team along with Dr. David Cruse and Dr. David Kim, in order to ensure that the proper steps are taken for providing concussion awareness and concussion man-agement. Should there be suspicion that an athlete may have sustained a concussion, a test can be admin-istered and compared the results of their baseline test. With this type of data, proper return to play guidelines can be assessed accordingly.

We now have free math tutoring every Tuesday and Wednesday from 2:45PM - 3:45 PM in room 220. Your student will receive individual and small group in-struction from peer-tutors and one of our own creden-tialed math teachers.

Your Edison PTSA is actively involved supporting our parents, teachers, and students. We support the Arts through our National Reflections Art Program. We prepare students and parents for life after high school through parent education programs on college plan-ning. Our Parent Partnership group provides support and education to students, parents and staff; working together to address teen issues such as bullying, cyber bullying and substance abuse. We also provide fund-ing for graduating senior scholarships and much more. Communicating with our members is another key focus of PTSA. As your teen navigates his or her way through high school, it is more important than ever for parents to stay involved and to know what is happening on campus. That is why we encourage you to join Edi-son High PTSA and get on our e-mail list. We also invite you to attend one of remaining Associa-tion Meetings throughout the school year at 7pm in the EHS Media Center (Library) on November 5, January 14, March 11, and May 13. At these meetings you'll hear valuable information about Edison High School and how to help students make the most of their time at Edison. Our first meeting included a parent demonstra-tion on how to use the Parent/Student Portal plus im-portant school and community updates from principal Dr. D'Liese Melendrez. In addition, a senior ASB stu-dent will report on upcoming campus activities. PTSA also offers special evening programs to educate parents on critical high school topics. The first of these programs titled, "7 Mistakes Families Make Planning for College . . . but Don't Know Until It Is Too Late," was presented September 26th . We hope you will join us for all of our activities and we encourage you to become a member. With mem-bership, you will receive valuable e-mail communica-tions and information in addition to discounts from our national PTA sponsors Hertz, Metlife and T-Mobile. Your membership strengthens our ability to advocate for the best learning environment for all children and youth. We want you to be a part of the process so please join us! Student Absence/Check Out Procedure

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year! First off, a big thank you to all of the EHS families who have already joined the Foundation this year. We appreciate your generous donations and are continually striving to use them in ways that benefit all students at Edison. Thank you to those who have given to our direct donation campaign. Our goal this year is to raise enough money to replace one of our aging computer labs. Computers are an integral part of our students’ daily lives, no matter their class load. Tech-nology-rich schools generate impressive results, including improved achievement, higher test scores, improved student atti-tudes, enthusiasm and engagement, richer classroom content and improved student retention and job placement rates. It will cost approximately $40,000 to replace one of our three labs. Please consider donating if you haven’t already.

Mark your calendar for our first event of the year, our annual Holiday Treats Boutique. Come and do some of your holiday shopping with us. This fun event will be held on Sat-urday, December 1st from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. If you are interested in being a vendor at this event please call Dolores White, Event Coordinator, at (714) 849-9571, or email her at [email protected].

Thank you again for supporting the Foundation and for helping the students and faculty of EHS through your generous dona-tions. Joy Moyers, President EHS Foundation

All of our students attended a thought provoking presen-tation with a 22 minute film drawing lessons from Col-umbine. Students came away with a deeper understand-ing of what constitutes bullying, how bullying can lead to serious consequences, and how they can intervene to stop bullying at Edison. Bullying is a reality none of us can afford to ignore. Each one of us at some point has been involved in some form of bullying. The challenge is to become aware and take a stand. As parents and educators we can take an active role in supporting the safety of all of our children. If you’re not part of the solution, you’re doing noth-ing. It’s time to deliberately do something to defend eve-ryone’s right to safety. If you are on the receiving end of a bully’s threats, tell somebody. Use Edison’s anony-mous tip line. Hang out with a buddy. Know the safe spaces on campus. If you are a witness to bullying behavior, comfort the victim. If safe to do so, confront the bully with a simple “Stop that.” Do not ignore. Do not condone. Do not par-ticipate. Do not encourage. Do not reward. Bystanders are not innocent. All too often we hear of a young person’s death by sui-cide. The isolation, ridicule, taunting, rumors, gossip, in person and increasingly via social media, become more than victims can cope with. We have an awesome oppor-tunity to become part of the solution. Model respect and tolerance. Encourage exploration of values. Praise acts of courage on behalf of those who appear different. Celebrate the richness of diversity. Teach empathy. Reward acts of kindness. Talk to your kids. Get them thinking about their impact on others. Create a safe space for them to confide in you. Listen. Empower them to seek help from any member of the staff at school. Help them really believe fear is not the only option. Monitor computer use. Review safety guidelines. One careless act can change a person’s life. One harmful act can end a person’s life. One kind act can save a per-son’s life. Together we can help our children make the best decisions. We can be the difference!

Teen Truth: Anti-bullying Assembly

New Club: "BE THE SOLUTION"

Meetings on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday

at lunch in Room 133

Unfortunately bullying is a fact of life at schools across the nation. Here at Edison we are taking steps to reduce the impact of these actions and to help our students deal with bullies. The staff is focusing on increased awareness of the problem and is talking with the students on how to prevent bullying. On September 27th Teen Truth spoke to the entire stu-dent body to help students understand the impact of their actions and what can be done to prevent the damage bullying does. As parents encourage your child to report any act of bullying to an adult here at Edison, we will act on the report and try to end the action that is causing your child’s discomfort. If you know that your child is a victim of bullying do not be afraid to contact the supervision office to report it. All information is kept confidential during our inves-tigation into the matter. Also you can help by mak-ing sure your child is not the one causing the prob-lem by talking to them about bullying. Thank you for your help keeping our students safe.

Reporting Bullying

Once again Edison is offering vol-untary drug testing to our students. Each month students are randomly selected for testing from those who signed up to participate in the program. The results of these tests

are sent to the parents of the students and the school is NEVER informed of the results. There is no cost for this service but parents are encouraged to make a do-nation to help support these efforts. For more informa-tion contact the supervision office at extension 4407.
