THE MARK OF A BETTER DRIVING EXPERIENCE.

freightlinerchassis.com

When you own a luxury motorcoach that displays this emblem,

you know you’re getting the premium RV driving experience.

At Freightliner Custom Chassis, we developed UltraSteer as the first

line of tag axles that are fully-integrated and precision-tuned to

react to turns and other maneuvers of the coach.

When used with FCCC’s ZF IFS front suspension and compared to a competitor’s

chassis (on a fixed tag), UltraSteer delivers up to 17% reduction in curb-to-curb

turning radius— the tightest turns in the industry. And, because the rear tires

follow the ideal 12º turning path, UltraSteer eliminates costly “tire scrub” wear.

UltraSteer is available with a straight beam axle suspension (B Series),

or with independent suspension (I Series). In both cases, you can

be proud to drive a luxury RV that shares a heritage of engineering

excellence with Mercedes-Benz and the entire Daimler Family.

Look for the UltraSteer emblem on your next premium coach.

I would like to say “Thank You” to all the hard work-ing organizers and volunteers who hosted the National Rally in Myrtle Beach. It takes a great deal of time and effort put forth by many people to make a successful rally and they did a great job. I would also encourage all of our members to contact their chapter presidents and help out at future rallies. It’s a great way to meet other chapter members and our ability to hold future national rallies is totally dependent on volunteers. Our next National Rally in Canyonville, OR, is rapidly approaching. Skip Dieter, NorCal/Northwest Presi-dent, has assembled a team from his chapter along with SoCal and Southwest members. The plans for the event are exciting and include a few “surprises”. If you are interested in attending but haven’t registered, there still may be a few openings remaining, but you need to act quickly. Registration information is available in our prior magazines and on the ACA website. You will need to contact Sharon Rodrigues to check on availability. Her contact information can be found on the registra-tion form.

While in Myrtle Beach, the board selected the Expo Center in Shawnee, OK for next year’s only national rally. The dates will be June 19 – 24, 2017. The Great Lakes, Missouri Valley and South Central Chapters will be hosting this event. The Expo Center has over 200 concrete parking sites, all of them including 50 amp

electrical service, water and sewer. There are a number of buildings available for meals, entertainment, vendors and seminars. We looked at many other potential loca-tions but finding one that is centrally located and has all the amenities needed is challenging.

I would ask any member to contact me if you know of a site that meets the necessary criteria for a future Na-tional Rally. Years ago these rallies involved either dry camping or just 30 amp electrical service. Today that doesn’t work well with the newer coaches.

Elsewhere in this magazine, you will find the Bylaws changes that I discussed last month. Because of the extensive revisions needed, we have printed the changes for you to review. The current Bylaws are available on-line for comparison. I would like to thank Scott Rose, our legal counsel, for all of his work on these revisions. You will be mailed an official ballot for voting on these changes in September. The results will then be available prior to the vote for ACA President and Vice President next spring if needed. Also, as a reminder, those offices are potentially open to any member who has been an officer in any local chapter. If interested in running for either position, please contact your chapter President or Bob Clapper, Chairman of the Nominating Committee. Have a great summer traveling and I hope to see you in Canyonville.\

Editor’s note: For ease of reaching the current bylaws to compare, they have been temporarily placed in a special location for your convenience: www.myamericancoach.com/bylaws

The ACA National Rally in Canyonville, Oregon is right around the corner. Sue and I have been there before with the American Coach Chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association (ACC) and I have to say the resort is one of the most premier in the entire country! The agenda will be tons of fun; the food will be plenty and crazy good! You will be greeted by the advance team who will direct you to your space and provide any and all as-sistance you may need getting settled. Additionally you will be warmly greeted at each sponsored event. I know that NorCal/Norwest is working extremely hard and will make sure any and every concern you have will be ad-dressed promptly.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, the facility is part of the Seven Feathers Casino, which provides a variety of dining choices, entertainment and if you so desire, and also gam-ing. This facility is clean, attractive and very fun.

We’re going to the Panama Canal!!! That’s right; the 2019 ACA cruise group has decided that a westbound Panama Canal cruise is the choice for our adventure. Again this is not an actual association sponsored event, but it’s aimed at those of us members who want to cruise as a group. Friends and families of members are, of course, invited as well. So far we have 16 couples of in-terested people. The exact departure date will be released in November of this year, but the sailing month is March.

Here are the basics: We will board the beautiful Celebrity Infinity in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Some of us will no doubt participate in a “pre-cruise” in Florida before hand. This is what I like to call a “no rules cruise”. We will be able to dine together each night, but excursions, cabin levels, all activities will be up to the individual couple.

We will embark in Ft. Lauderdale and visit, Cartagena, Columbia; Colon, Panama; Panama Canal; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and disembark in San Diego, Ca.

ACA National Vice-President

If you are interested you can email me, call me or contact our travel agent, Karen Schmier.Karen SchmierMartin Travel Services4644 North University DriveLauderdale, Florida [email protected]

Karen has handled our travel needs for years. A deposit of $450 per person will need to be made in November, but final payment will not be required until December of 2018. This allows for ample cancellation time and a full refund window.

Don’t live with regrets! These events/activities are for you. Join in the fun, both at Canyonville and for the 2019 cruise.

Great LakesIt was just a few weeks ago that Kathy and I were pre-paring to travel to Myrtle Beach for the ACA National Rally. Now it’s history and June is here.

GLC was well represented with 17 coaches in atten-dance. Among them were two First Timers. I would like to welcome Bill & Rita Sunderman of Hunting-ton, Indiana and David & Mary Jensen of Kalamazoo, Michigan. We hope to see you both at many upcoming events. Kudos to the ACA National Rally team for a very fun filled 5 days. I love going to these rallies as I learn so much….not only about our motorhomes, but also about our members! We have a very knowledgeable and talented group of members in the GLC.

A couple parked next to us who reside in the GLC area, but not GLC members (I’m working on them) did some LED light replacement on their headlamps and side marker lights. It was interesting to listen to he and Rob Lowe discuss the ins and outs of revamp-ing those lights. Rick De Angeles was put to the test when he helped me realign my bay door that flew open during our rainstorm on Friday and almost sprung the hinge. And then there is AJ & Kathie Guttierrez……now dubbed the Karaoke King and Queen!!! They did a wonderful job entertaining the audience!

As we look ahead to the summer months, we have a few things on the horizon for GLC. By the time you get this, our Hearthside Grove rally will be in full swing—or over. But not to worry as we have the July rally at Dakota Meadows in Prior Lake, MN, and our Shipshe-wanna Rally in August. Both are listed in the magazine. Please take a look and come join us. Any questions, please contact me via email or my cell number listed in the magazine.

Get well wishes to Jeff Bratsburg. Jeff was running a race and did some tendon damage. We send our well wishes and hope he is on the mend, and back to normal real soon.

I would like to ask that as you travel this great country, keep your eyes open for sites that we can have a national rally at. Basic requirements are to accommodate 150-200 coaches, preferably full hookups and with facilities that can accommodate 300-400 people for meals and entertainment, some meeting rooms for seminars and a place for vendors. Not much to ask, is it?

If any of you have information that you would like to share with the group, please let me know.

One last very important message…….GLC along with Missouri Valley and South Central will be hosting the ACA National Rally at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposi-tion Center in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The dates are June 19th to June 24th, 2017. Mark your calendars. I am seeking your input, AND your help. More will follow.

As always, safe travels and I hope to see you at our up-coming rallies.

I hope this letter finds you enjoying summer adventures! Pauline and I are still winding down following the Myrtle Beach Rally and want to thank everyone that made the rally a huge success. The Myrtle Beach rally was hosted by the combined efforts of four chapters, Northeast, Mac Pack, Happy Wanderers and Southeast.

A huge “Thank You!” goes out to our Southeast rally team of VP/Rally coordinator Rich Forcier along with Ken Browning, Johnny Spacek, and Terry & Belinda Moorefield for hosting a great Myrtle Beach pre-rally! The team hosted three evening and one morning social with well over a hundred southeast folks in attendance. Their hospitality and culinary expertise was flawless! We are incredibly fortunate to have them all on our team! Rich, Johnny and Ken also did a terrific job hosting our “Spring Fling” Rally in Brunswick, Georgia just a few days before the festivities started in Myrtle Beach.

We were honored to have retired United States Air Force Lieutenant General Roy Manor attend the Brunswick rally. The General was gracious to share several of his fighter pilot experiences, including missions he flew over D-Day. Those of us that have had the opportunity to hear the General will never forget his commentary and are looking forward to future meetings!

Southeast got a new treasurer in May. Thank you to our previous treasurer Monty Campbell and his wife Barbara for their years of service to Southeast! Welcome to our new treasurer John Henning and his wife Iris! John and Iris have been active members of Southeast for several years, all of us look forward to working with John in this wonderful adventure.

Southeast will take a few months off during the summer season, but our rally hosts are already at work planning several rallies. In October we are doing something differ-ent, participating in the Lazydays Halloween Rally. The rally includes three nights at the Lazydays campground and the catering and entertainment that Lazydays does so well. We will have our own tables and a southeast specific event (TBD).

The “Southeast returns to the Keys 2016” rally received a lot of attention at Myrtle Beach and the rally is well over half capacity. After registering for the rally, you are eligible for four early (pre-rally) and four late (post rally) days at a really remarkable rally rate!

The Annual Southeast Christmas Rally at Sun N Fun also received a lot of attention at Myrtle Beach. In 2016 we have more sites and a larger meeting room. Our rally hosts have also added an afternoon sightseeing cruise in-cluded in the rally package. This one is going to be great!

The 2017 Regional registrations are coming in and I am happy to report that the number of registrants is ahead of where we were at this time last year! The 2017 Regional Rally will be held the week before the Supershow and we are looking forward to having the opportunity to attend the Supershow as a group. More details to follow!

Our VP/Rally coordinator Rich Forcier and I are looking at our 2017 Rally schedule and are always ready to receive your input! There are a few rallies I believe will return, including the annual regional, the “Return to the Keys” and our annual Christmas rally at Sun N Fun. That still leaves us several opportunities! Please provide us input and feedback!

Pauline and I feel very fortunate to be a part of this chapter and we hope to see you soon!Ray Shea

Here I am pondering what to write for our national ACA magazine article while in the background Ameri-can war stories are showing on PBS, commemorating Memorial Day. What a trip these men and women experienced fighting for our way of life, freedom, liberty and justice. Take a moment and reflect about our Americans in uniform, their sacrifice for us, and offer thanks for their willingness to take this noble journey.

Our journey to the May 2016 national rally was excel-lent. The Atlantic coastal region is beautiful and his-

South Central

torical. At the rally the seminars were full of helpful information and well attended. One order of business our national board studied was the 2017 national rally schedule. A decision was made and their decision was a good direction to go. It looks like ACA will no longer have two annual national rallies, so our atten-tion will be turning to the only national rally in 2017 at Shawnee, Oklahoma. Shawnee is located centrally and should draw from all of the chapters.

As we journey toward our next national rally in Canyonville, Oregon, my wife and I are excited about the many national treasures we will see along the way. Reflecting on journeys, it was brought to our attention by Irv Bretz at the May national rally, that we should remember that it is not so much the destination but all about the journey! Irv presented and encouraged us through a presentation and slide show of the natu-ral wonders (and parks) in the great west and it’s a trip we’re excited to make. Of course what binds us is we have chosen to take the journey in our RVs and with our friends in the American Coach Association. What a great group to travel with and celebrate life.

Vicki and I will begin our journey west in Kerrville, TX at the South Central Chapter’s rally, July 11-15. South Central Chapter will be presenting a $10,000 check to the V.A. Dogs of Texas for delivery of a companion dog to a veteran. Talk about exciting! We will meet the veteran recipient, the dog and the train-ers, most importantly giving back. South Central: doing our part. Remember, if you want to join our South Central Chapter, come on down. We have open enrollment and Robin Fagala, our membership chair is always ready for business. Rallies are such a good way to restore and nurture our friendships, learn and maintain our coaches and see more of our beautiful country. Volunteering to help in your local chapter or the national rally is important to keep the journey going.

Please remember the men and women in uniform who protect and defend our way of life. God bless you and God bless America.

Allen Meek,President, South Central Chapter

Stella and I have returned home for the early Summer months. We are experiencing lower than normal temps for now but we expect a normally hot Summer as the year progresses. We will celebrate the Summer Holidays at home before we head out again for more RVing fun on our way to the Canyonville, OR National Rally at 7 Feathers RV resort.

We will join fellow ACA members before and after the rally as we work our way to the SW Chapter rally at Zion National Park and other locales before arriving at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in Oc-tober. The year 2017 is just around the corner and we have much to look forward to and much to plan.

Here’s wishing all of us safe and happy travels through-out the rest of the year.

So what’s so special about this rally that I need to drive cross country? Well you bought that coach to travel, didn’t you? You convinced the Mrs. that if we buy this coach we will see all that this country has to offer, didn’t you? It costs too much to travel across the country. I say 6 + MPG is not bad for a house… We’ve already seen everything there is to see. I say I don’t believe it.It’s time to travel and enjoy all that life has to offer, when it’s finally time to stop I plan on coming in skid-ding and saying oh what a ride I had… Oh how I can get off track when my passion for traveling kicks in. I am writing my last article for the ACA magazine as president of MacPack. As of July 1st our chapter will be led by Larry Thomas as incoming president. I have enjoyed my time in of-fice even though I will admit that there were times I could not think of a thing to write about for this magazine.

As usual when I needed help, my fellow chapter members stepped up with an article for the magazine. I was not at the Myrtle Beach rally due to our coach having a complete engine failure. Jim Dee the treasurer of MacPack stepped up and stood in for me for the rally. I want to thank Jim and his wife

Carol for taking good care of the chapter in my absence. Of course all the other members old and new stepped up to help also, thank you to all of you also.

Even though we did not have our coach we were able to join

our MacPack chapter for the Lynchburg Air Show rally. It was an awesome rally with friends, food and a great air show. The Blue Angels put on a great show even though the ceiling was low because of overcast condi-tions. Don and

Brenda Carpenter were the perfect rally hosts. Their business was a perfect viewing area for the show and the food was deli-cious, especially the BBQ that Don fixed for us.

We were also treated to a concert Sunday evening by Todd Hallawell who is a National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion. I have always loved that you meet so many unique people in the RV lifestyle. Each one has a life story or talent that you discover with each new interaction with them. There are some pictures here from the Air Show, thanks to Jeff Hatfield for taking them for us.

I will close with wishes for continued good health and safe travels for all of you. Judy Gallion

Mac PackAs I begin writing we are attending the May 9, ACA Spring Rally at Myrtle Beach, SC. I am surrounded by beautiful American Coaches, sunshine, new and old “bonus friends”, what a wonderful life. There are 171 coaches attending - 20 more had originally made plans to addend, but ended up canceling at the last minute- Something can always come up. I am told “Ocean Lakes” is the largest RV park in the world, I believe it!

An ACA rally is a perfect time to have repairs made to your coach. Available for appointments are the ACA guys, Kevin Mallory and John with Cruising America, Lloyd DeGerald with Aqua-Hot and other special-ists. My husband Ronnie who can usually fix anything decided to upgrade our lights to led lights. I think he forgot how to count, after three trips to Kevin Mallory he got them all. Boy! What a difference. Let there be light.

After the rally we headed to Charlotte, Michigan to Spartan for their 44 point checkup. They came up with several problems that needed attention. After four days we were on our way to Celina, Ohio to Cruising Ameri-ca for roof caulking. We should be set for awhile.

The next ACA rally “Roll Your Wagons West” will be held starting August 22, 2016. They still have room in Canyonville, Oregon. Out West there is so much to see coming and going.

The board has decided to have only one rally next year. SAVE THE DATE- June 19 to the 24th. This is a dif-ferent time so please make a note. We will gather at the Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center in Shawnee, Oklaho-ma. Remember, IT’S ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN!!!

Re-reading my last article, this one will be pretty boring compared to the winter activates! EXCEPT for the recap from our Myrtle Beach national….what a fantastic pre rally we had with the Happy Wanderers, followed by the National.

Jackie and Rob Maddox, members of NE and HW were sorely missed, but happy to report they have recovered from their coach fire and are looking forward to hitting the road soon, if not already! Our pre rally had a bit of everything, mini golf, and breakfast burritos with Bloody Mary’s, burgers and dogs with pot luck sides, and great social hours! I don’t think anyone went hungry!

NE/HW mini golf team

The National rally kicked off Monday evening with a “Back to the Beach” theme, complete with beach balls, sand, and flip flops. We went on an “off the park excursion” Tuesday to the Legends show where I think everyone had a great time listening with Elvis, the Blues Brothers, Taylor Swift, and Barry White. From there we made our way to the largest, best Calabash seafood buffet in Myrtle Beach!! Best part: no one got lost, missed the show or meal!!

Our guys strutted their stuff for Karaoke and danced pretty good Thursday night, along with great Friday night entertainment to end the rally on a high note!! Brenda and James Anderson flashed a pretty good smile too, along with the Rose’s, Warren Stevens and Isabelle, and the Herman’s.

Next on our agenda is our Fall Rally in Mystic, CT, Sep-tember 15-19. You can call Seaport RV Resort directly 860-245-6038 or email [email protected]

for a 24 hour response. All are welcome to join us! That’s if for now, most of us like to stay close to home and enjoy summer in the NE! Have a fun, safe 4th of July as we celebrate our great country, and remember to keep your eyes open, you never know who you’ll see along the way!

Hey all you CampersWell… Spring is in the rear view mirror and we are well on our ways to the hot summer months! So Cal had a great Mother’s day rally thanks to the ef-forts of Susan and Scott Rose and the team effort of the all the So Cal members. Not to mention Fred and Stella Sotelo for hosting the games- And Pat Adams for the humor of the evening games.

So Cal has a June and July without any rallies so Becky and I are taking a cruise and land tour to Alaska. When we return we will be excited to head to the Wine Country RV Resort in Paso Robles Ca. for the Harvest Happiness rally hosted by the Scott’s, Gottleib’s and the Mc Lorn’s sure to be a great time.

From the Wine Country RV Resort several members, headed up by Pat Adams will be heading to Clio for a side trip on their way to The National Rally in Canyon-ville Oregon @ Seven Feathers RV Resort where we are all planning on a great rally.

Well from Seven Feathers we are heading back home in until we head out the first weekend of October for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The Adams, Ford’s and Sotelo’s to name a few plan to stay out and travel north and work their way back to the Balloon Fi-esta. While another 35 or so of us are planning a much shorter rolling rally from Southern California with a few stops at the Colorado River, Black Bart’s in Flagstaff Arizona, and staging at the KOA in Holbrook Arizona the night before the Balloon Fiesta. Many thanks to Bill Dittmer for all his efforts helping us plan the Balloon Fiesta rally a success.

Joe and Debbie Darby are hosting a Holiday Rally at the Flying Flags RV resort in Buellton December 1st to the 5th. We are going to have a great time- With the town of Solvang all decorated up for the Holidays. The Flying Flags RV resort has just completed an all new addition to the park. Becky and I visited the park last

Southern Californiamonth it turned out just great! If you have family with-out a coach, Flying flags has installed several different types of units, park models, an Air Stream trailer, even furnished tents for friends and family.

We also have our first rally for 2017 planned for March 23th through 26th at Indian Waters RV Resort. Indio Ca. Hosted by Mary and Lanny Wilson.

You all travel safe! Don’t forget it’s all about the fun. Enjoy the adventure!Bob ClapperSo Cal ACA President

Choosing a House BATTERY by Gary Brinck

In a previous issue I discussed Chassis or engine starting batteries. In this article we will focus on House Batteries and how to select one that meets your needs.

House vs Chassis BatteriesThe best house batteries are a different breed. Starting batteries are designed to provide a huge amount of power (amps) in a short burst (a few seconds) to get an engine going, but house batteries are designed to provide a smaller amount of amps but over a long period of time, hours instead of seconds. Furthermore, house batteries are often heavily discharged before being fully recharged again, what is known a “deep cycling”. A battery designed for lower but continuous power and deep cycling will last longer and perform better than an engine starting battery, often giving several years or more or service.

You can use most any battery that can produce 12v in some combination, but using an unsuitable type will result in poor battery life. That may OK if you seldom camp without shore power and want to save money on batteries. Engine starting batteries are produced in huge quantities and pricing is very competitive, so they are often much lower priced. Expect just 1-2 years of useful life is using an engine start battery in your house battery bank.

Some of our coaches have separate battery banks for a residential refrigerator. That’s still considered a house battery.

Battery Technologies for RV Use

Nearly all RV batteries use lead-acid technology but it comes in different packages. The basic package is called a flooded cell battery, in which the lead plates are bathed in a liquid water/acid solution (the electrolyte). This type loses a little of the solution each time it is charged, so requires the addition of some pure water once in awhile. So-called “maintenance free” batteries attempt to reduce the loss of electrolyte by sealing the cells except for a tiny vent hole, but this isn’t very effective under the frequent heavy charging that is typical of deep cycle use, so it is not a good choice for an RV house battery. Choose a maintenance free type for the chassis batteries, but not for the house.

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries retain the electrolyte solution in a sponge made of glass fibers and are totally sealed except for a safety valve. This type is very effective in reducing the loss of electrolyte during charging and is an excellent technology choice. Gel type batteries use a thick paste electrolyte and are also fully sealed, so they are a good choice as well. However, AGM has largely replaced Gel technology for RV use.

Battery using lithium chemistry instead of lead+acid are now coming available, but are still very pricey. There are sealed like AGM batteries and are supposed to last even longer, but nobody has much experience with them yet. This is the battery tech used in modern electric cars, so we can expect prices to come down over time.

AGM vs Flooded – Why Pay More?AGM deep cycle batteries cost quite a bit more than flooded types, but they bring several advantages:

v 7-10 year service lifev No need to check electrolyte levels or add waterv No corrosion of wires or battery areav Can be mounted in any position (even upside down!)

v No venting required

For those who tend to be forgetful about monitoring the electrolyte in flooded cell batteries or hate cleaning the terminals, an AGM battery provides freedom from those chores while also delivering excellent performance and long life. Even if you now have golf cart batteries, you will appreciate the maintenance advantages of AGM.

6 Volt vs 12v (Golf Cart Batteries)

You’ve probably heard that 6v batteries are better for RVs. This refers to the 6 volt, size GC2, deep cycle designed for use in golf carts. It is an extremely rugged, deep cycle design and two of them can be wired in series to form a 12 volt, 225 AH battery that works

This refers to the 6 volt, size GC2, deep cycle designed for use in golf carts. It is an extremely rugged, deep cycle design and two of them can be wired in series to form a 12 volt, 225 AH battery that works extremely well in RV applications. As a true deep cycle design, they will likely give many years of service. 7+ years is typical and many get 10 or more years from a set of golf cart batteries. What’s so great about 6v vs 12v? Nothing. It’s not the voltage that makes the difference – it’s the rugged construction and deep cycle design that makes a golf car battery a top choice for a house battery. Quality 12v deep cycles work just as well. However, chances are you can get lower pricing on a 6v golf cart (GC2) battery than on a 12v deep cycle of the same Amp-Hour capacity. It’s a matter of production economics – golf carts are a big market with many battery dealers and plenty of competition. Golf cart batteries must be used in pairs, so you need space for 2 or 4 or 6 of them. They are available in both flooded cell and AGM types. If you presently have 12v batteries, changing to 6V is a minor wiring change. All your existing electrical equipment won’t know the difference – it’s just 12v packaged in two boxes instead of one. How about Marine/RV Batteries? So-called “Marine & RV” batteries are a compromise design that combines the characteristics of starting and deep cycling. As with most compromises, they aren’t great for either purpose. The main advantage is that it is a variation of a starting battery and can be produced by the same manufacturing process, making it a much less expensive battery than a specialty deep cycle. Its primary drawback is that it will not last as long as a true deep cycle and rarely lasts more than 3 years as a house battery. The batteries many RV dealers install are often the Marine type, though they may also have “RV” and “deep cycle” on their label. These should be the cheapest RV house batteries, so don’t pay top prices for them. A marine or trolling motor battery from Walmart will do as well and typically costs less than one from an RV store with identical specs. If you seldom go without shore power for long, a marine deep cycle may be a cost effective choice, but don’t be surprised when you have to replace them sooner than your buddy’s AGM deep cycles.

If you seldom go without shore power for long, a marine deep cycle may be a cost effective choice, but don’t be surprised when you have to replace them sooner than your buddy’s AGM deep cycles.

Amp Hours, RC, and SuchDeep cycle battery capacity is measured in AH (Amp-Hours), meaning the total number of amps of power it can deliver over a 20 hour period. An alternative measurement is called RC (Reserve Capacity), which is the number of minutes the battery can sustain a 25 amp load. There is no exact way to convert AH to RC, but a typical 100-115 AH battery would have an RC of 175-200 minutes. You don’t have to understand the method of measuring to know that “more is better”, so a battery with a larger AH or RC rating is better (more capacity) than a smaller one.

If you are seldom without shore power, maybe just driving from home to a campground, you don’t need a lot of capacity. If that’s the case, there is no need to pay for the larger sizes of deep cycle. You might even consider reducing the number of 12v batteries from 4 to 3 (many lower priced motorhomes come with just two). Four Group 27 size, flooded cell deep cycles will provide about 400 AH of power, plenty for traveling and usually adequate for an overnight. Or use the GC2 (golf cart) 6v batteries, which combine excellent service with moderate price. Four GC2’s will provide about 440 AH of power. For more amp hours of power, move up to a Group 31 size 12v deep cycle, about 480-500 AH.

AGM and Gel batteries store about 10% less amp hours for any given size, so you probably want one of the larger sizes if you choose AGM or Gel.

Battery BrandsThere is no need to worry a lot about the brand name on a battery – just focus on the specs (AH, RC, weight and number of charge cycles). Most batteries come from the same factories and just get different labels and sometimes different warranties. These are known as private label batteries. Many of the best known battery brands, e.g. Interstate, are private label brands. Exceptions are specialty manufacturers such as Trojan and Lifeline (Concorde), who design and manufacture their own batteries for the deep cycle market.

What’s right for me?Consider your needs and then shop around for prices on the various battery types. Prices on true deep cycles can vary greatly, so don’t give up on them if the first price quotes are high. Sam’s Club and Costco warehouse stores are often an excellent source for deep cycle batteries at a reasonable price.

PROPOSED BYLAWS CHANGESThe changes underlined on the following pages were written by Scott Rose, legal counsel, reviewed by the By-laws Committee and accepted by the ACA Board. The rationale behind each change is as follows:

Article 3.3 – This addition allows Past Presidents to continue as Emeritus members at no cost if desired.

Article 8 – This is extensively rewritten and will now allow for elections and future Bylaws changes to be voted on by electronic, phone or mail in ballots as desired. The votes will be confidential, controlled so that each member coach can only vote once, and tabulated by the outside company contracted to perform this service. This will make voting quicker and more convenient for everyone. We also hope this will increase voting partici-pation.

Article 10 - This clarifies that the Bylaws Committee, rather than just an individual member, can propose changes.

Article 11 – Deleting the word “regular” allows Emeritus members to join a chapter.

Definition of “Regional Rally” – This is just to clarify the events that have taken place over the past few years.

Voting ballots on these Bylaws changes will be mailed out this fall. Thank you for your support.

Bob Frank

Editor’s note: This discussion with REV Group’s Jim Jacobs is an excerpt from the February issue of RV PRO Magazine, and essentially is the portion which relates to American Coach. If you would like to read it all, you may do so on line at this address: http://read.uberflip.com/i/631314-february-16/28 . This portion is reprinted here with the permission of the publisher, RV PRO Magazine.

Q&A with REV Group’s Jim Jacobs - Reducing the number of brands the manufacturer (Ameri-can Coach) produces allows the company to be more innovative and to focus on quality production.

By Travis O. PryorIf there’s an RV manufacturer that has seen more change over the past year than REV Group, the former Allied Recreation Group, it’s hard to imagine who that might be.

In April, ARG President John Draheim retired. In late May, industry veteran Jim Jacobs was named successor to the position. Jacobs’ experience with Forest River and Jayco offered a new perspective that set the RV maker up to go in a new direction.

In October, the company announced it would be revamping its Decatur, Ind., service center and adding new customer service centers in other parts of the country.

November saw ARG become REV in a corporate name change designed to emphasize “the forward-thinking, international leadership in the industries it serves”.

By December, REV Recreation Group was emphasizing its commitment to the RV industry with the announcement of a new manufacturing facility designated for production of Class C motorhomes for the Fleetwood and Holiday Rambler brands.

So, with a plan in place and the new leader in position long enough to become established, Jacobs took some time out from all the activity for a question-and-answer session with RV PRO. What follows are his thoughts about streamlining some of the iconic lineups REV produces, how the company plans to make use of its service centers and Jacobs’ commitment to restoring the company’s reputation for producing quality vehicles.

RV PRO: Since becoming president of REV Group, you’ve made some moves geared at streamlining and focusing your products, particularly with the American Coach products. What changes have you made there and what led to those changes?Jacobs: That product line previously had five different brands under the American Coach umbrella: the American Revolu-tion, the American Allegiance, the American Tradition, the American Eagle and the American Heritage. We felt like that was too much complexity, too many price points, and too much consumer confusion.

We completely repositioned that product at Louisville. We introduced a new Revolution Diamond Edition that gives us a product content at a price we have never been before.

We also just introduced the new American Dream. The 42-footers will be on the 450 side radiator steerable tag IFS Freight-liner platform. It’s a fantastic package at a very aggressive price point.

The 45-footers will be on a Freightliner chassis, side radiator, but a 600-horsepower with steerable tag and IFS front end. This will be the most aggressively positioned 600-horse product on the market. We know there’s a strong consumer demand to get into a 600-horse package at a much lower price point. We think our solution is going to be the best value proposition on the market.

The Heritage product was a great product. It was also a complex product to build. We’ve actually taken the Eagle brand and added a Heritage package, so you can buy a great Heritage product with some really cool features, but it’s much more ag-gressively priced because it’s easier for us to build. For an extremely high-end product, it’s a really nice package that we’ve introduced.

We feel like, from a brand-positioning standpoint, we’re really there with our American Coach products. This is going to be really strong segment for us this coming year and into the future.

As we approach the middle of summer, it’s hard to believe that another Rally has ended. I hope all of you that attended the rally in Myrtle Beach had fun and safe travels following the rally. We were happy to launch the 2017 Revolution at the rally and very excited about the customer response. Our manufacturing team is working diligently on shipping our 2017 lineup to our valued dealer network. For those of you not able to attend the rally, here are some updates I spoke about to the group.

We are pleased to announce that we are expanding our service network. We have recently purchased property in Mesquite, Nevada, were we plan to build a service center very similar to the size of our Decatur facility. Although this is still in the planning stages we hope to break ground in 2017. This will give our customers traveling out west yet another place to get their service needs taken care of. This new addition along with Coburg, OR, Decatur, IN and Alvarado, TX will give our customers from all over the country access to our Service network.

American Coach has also been working very hard at adding new dealers throughout the country. We have recently signed six new locations in the west and mid-west. We will continue to pursue good, quality American Coach dealers across the country to insure wherever your travels take you, American Coach dealers will be close by.

Although another rally has gone by, we now quickly approach the upcoming Canyonville, OR rally in late August. We will have a new dealer there representing all the new 2017 American Coach brands with a great display. We look forward to showing you our new products and changes we continue to make provided by your feedback.

We are extremely blessed this year on the growth of your business and look forward to continuing these successes the remainder of the year. We look forward to seeing you in Oregon.

American Coach. The heart of luxury, the soul of Freedom.

Sincerely yours,Lenny RazoVice President of Sales & Marketing, American Coach

Technical Tips #88© By Rob Lowe

Tire  Maintenance  and  Pressure  Monitoring  (Part  1):    With an increasing number of people joining the ranks of RV owners, some of the basics need to be passed along to provide safety while travelling. One basic precept is proper tire maintenance and care and another is tire pressure monitoring. I’ll review some of the basics in this article and provide some options for those unsure about how to monitor tire pressure in a subsequent Tech Tip. Tire Weight Carrying Capacity

Tires on RVs are specified based on the maximum weight they can carry in either a single or dual configuration. Each tire requires a specified air pressure to carry the weight of a properly loaded RV. All vehicle manufacturers must place on the vehicle, a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards

(FMVSS) label that certifies the vehicle meets the applicable standards as of the date of manufacture. On RVs, the tire pressure shown on the label is the minimum tire air pressure required to allow the RV to carry the weight of the empty RV plus the weight of the “stuff” (people and possessions) up to its maximum payload and vehicle weight capacity (GVWR). This label also specifies the tire pressures required in each axle position to meet the standards. It is located on the driver’s door post for all Class B and C (van style RVs) vehicles and is similar

to the one shown in the photo. As an example, the label shown recommends 65 PSI (448 kPa) for the front tires and 80 PSI (552 kPa) for the rear tires to meet the 8,510lb. (3,861kg) GVWR.

On most trailers, this label is located on the left front exterior wall near the bottom of the side wall. The label shown recommends 66 PSI (455 kPa) for all tires including the spare tire to meet the 3,980 lb. (1,807kg) GVWR. On larger Class A RVs, the body builder

(coach maker) usually places this label low on the interior wall near the driver’s seat. The tire pressure shown on the label should be utilized until the RV is loaded as it will be used, with all the ‘stuff’ to be taken along including people and full fuel, LP (Propane) and water tanks. On the label shown the GVWR is 26,500 lb. (12,020 kg) with the front and rear tires inflated to 105 PSI (724 kPa) tire pressure. Ideally the RV should be weighed as it will be used, preferably on individual wheel scales which measure the actual weight carried at each wheel position. This method provides the most accurate weight information. When this particular RV was weighed as it was loaded, the tire pressures were reduced to 100 PSI (689 kPa) for the front tires and 95 PSI (655 kPa) for the rear. Should the weight of things inside the RV be increased, then the tire pressures should be increased up to the maximum of 105 PSI (724 kPa). Never exceed the GVWR or the maximum tire pressure shown on the tires. If individual weigh scales are not available, then having the RV weighed axle by axle will provide somewhat less accurate but useful information. This method makes the assumption that the weight is evenly distributed side for side, since the measured

26

Page 29: Fall National Rally canyonville, oregon · Mac Pack - Larry Thomas 133A S. Little River Run, Eatonton, GA 31024 478-968-2981 / 804-314-9328 Cell thomas1676@windstream.net ... h e

weight is simply divided by two to determine the weight at each side of the axle. That may be incorrect: often one side of the RV is heavier than the other since the appliances (as an example) are on that side. A popular place to have a RV weighed is at large truck stops that have a CAT Scale. Once the weight carried on each wheel position or axle is determined, the next step is to consult the tire maker’s tire pressure and specification charts often found on the maker’s website. The weight carrying ability of each tire depends upon whether it is a single tire or as part of a pair of dual tires. Take the weight measured for each tire position and look at the chart for that weight and use the tire pressure that will carry that weight or slightly more. Tire pressure should be the same on both sides of an axle, so use the tire pressure required for the wheel position that is carrying the most weight on both sides of an axle. If the weight was provided for an axle, then divide the axle weight in half and look at the single or dual tire capacity in the charts and use the specified pressure for the next higher weight amount. As an example, if the air pressure specified on a set of dual tires is 80 PSI, then use 85 PSI as the minimum tire pressure on each tire on the axle. All of the tire pressure recommendations are Cold Tire pressures- that is the pressure should be at the recommended pressure before the tire is used. Check the pressure in the morning before heading out for the day. As the ambient temperature increases the pressure will also increase, and vice versa, so the Cold Tire pressure should be checked and adjusted before heading out. While on the topic of checking tire pressure, we can’t over emphasize the importance of an accurate, high quality, tire pressure gauge. Most prefer a dual foot style that can be pushed onto the valve stem of the outer dual tire and single tires and pulled onto the valve stem of the inner dual tire. Of course this assumes that there are no tire valve extensions. The purchase of this gauge is not the time to buy a cheap one. After purchase take the tire gauge to a truck tire shop and see how it compares to their gauge. If it does not match or read very close to the shops, then return it and get another. You need to know that the gauge you are using is reflecting accurate readings. Some prefer electronic gauges however for a number of reasons I’d suggest sticking with a good quality mechanical gauge. While on the topic of tire extensions, many tire shops highly recommend against their use. In most cases a proper valve stem with a solid extension can be installed allowing tire pressure to be read and adjusted and eliminating the risk of an extension working itself loose or being damaged, resulting in instant air loss.   Tires Don’t ‘Wear’ Out, They ‘Age’ Out Tires on RVs generally do not ‘wear’ out, they ‘age’ out. It is very rare for a RV tire to require replacement because the tread has worn down to where it needs to be replaced, barring any unusual tire alignment issues. Tag axle tires on some RVs are the most likely tires to actually ‘wear out’ since they are dragged when turning and rubber is literally scraped off the tread. Most RV tires become old and are required to be changed long before the tread wears out. Since the chassis is built prior to the RV body, in most cases, the tires will likely be one to two years older than the RV. This already puts the useful life of the tires at a disadvantage since the tires have already begun to age without any use.

The question often asked is: “How do you know how old the tires actually are?” The date of manufacture will be stamped on one side of the tire sidewall. It may not always be visible since that side may have been mounted facing the inside rather than the outside of the RV, especially in dual wheel applications. It will appear as shown in the photo following the letters DOT, a few other letters or numbers and then a ringed area with

four numbers known as the date code, such as that shown (3015). The first two digits show the week of the year of manufacture (i.e. 01 to 52) whereas the last two digits show the year the tire was manufactured. Thus the date code for the tire shown in the photo of 3015 indicates that this tire was manufactured the 30th week of 2015 or July 20th to 26th, 2015. RV tire manufacturers recommend RV specific tires be checked for condition every year with a thorough inspection at a truck tire shop beginning when the tire is five (5) years old. Any cracking or checking in the sidewalls or tread is an indication that the tire is beginning to deteriorate. When a tire is regularly used, it naturally flexes and brings the waxes and carbon in the rubber to the surface to provide protection against UV and Ozone. If the tire sits, not being regularly used, it ‘dries’ out when exposed to these conditions. Newer tires can last up to 10 years although 7 is considered the maximum by many. Any time a tire is used underinflated by more than 20%, it is subject to deterioration that dramatically shortens its useful and safe life. It should be removed and inspected, possibly replaced, since damage may have occurred. Always keep RV tires clean, using water and a brush to remove the dirt. Do not use any silicone or tire dressings to make the tire ‘look good’ since these dressings actually promote deterioration. I have found applying 303 Protectant once or twice a year to be one acceptable solution. I have also eschewed covering the tires, when parked however our RV benefits from being stored inside when not in use. Any time a RV is sitting with tires exposed to the sun for longer periods of time (weeks or months) then covering them to protect them from direct sunlight is a good idea. Ozone will still deteriorate the tires and if the covers attract heat (by being black in color) or wrap around the tire retaining built up heat, then the benefit of covering them may be greatly reduced. Conjecture has it that tires on RVs not subject to intense sun and weather conditions last longer and I would say that the annual inspections are better at determining the tire condition than where it is used. We completed a 10,000 mile (16,000km) round trip to Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon and Alaska on 8-year old tires following the full inspection and recommendation of our tire dealer that the tires were in excellent condition. We carried a spare tire, which we did not need. As the tires were entering their ninth year upon our return home, we replaced them. The ride quality on the original tires was deteriorating giving us a rougher ride than previously. I often refer to older tires as being more ‘plastic like’ not ‘rubber’ to highlight this hardening of the rubber. An example of how the rubber deteriorates with age was demonstrated on a prior RV on which we had decided to buy new tires. The tires were smaller and lighter and I could lift them up quite easily. When the Tire Technician questioned why I was changing tires when they had ‘lots of tread left’, I lifted one of the removed tires to shoulder height with my arms extended and dropped the tire to the ground. It bounced back up about 6” (15cm). I then repeated this with the new tire and it bounced back to within 6” (15cm) of the height that I had dropped it from. We both quickly understood the benefit of the new tires. Tread life is rarely an issue on RVs, Age is! In the next Tech Tip, I’ll cover the importance of tire pressure monitoring,

ACA GROUP

Hello again, Debbie & Terry here, checking in from cyber-space.

It’s summer and time to celebrate! Not only is the nation’s birthday party this summer - July 4th - but the AC Yahoo group is also cele-brating a milestone birthday. This year, on June 16, the AC Yahoo site will celebrate 15 years of providing AC owners an easy, quickly accessible forum to call out for help with their coach issues when needed. I can’t even begin to imagine the frustration and money that has been saved by members because of the knowledge gained on the forum. I know this, because WE are some of those who have seen these savings. We were able to repair things ourselves with help from the forum, and we’ve also saved service tech time by provid-ing documentation on the easiest way to do a repair with a print out from the files section of the AC Yahoo Group on something we couldn’t repair ourselves.

Thank you to ALL members for your participation. With-out you and your willingness to share your knowledge, and your willingness to trust

people you may have never met with issues on your coach, this forum would never have been as success-ful as it has been. We’ve been described as one of the friendliest forums on the In-ternet, and that due to all of you! We are nearing 2,800 members now, and that is just awesome! Happy 15th Birthday American Coach Yahoo Group!!!

The best way to celebrate these two birthdays is to get that beautiful coach of yours out on the open road this summer and put some miles on it! We are in Frederick Colorado at Transwest Truck, Trailer and RV for the sum-mer again, so a good desti-nation or stop on your trip would be to stop by and visit us. Frederick is about 20-25 miles North of Denver just off I25, so you could take a trip to the incredible Rocky Mountains either on your way here or after you leave. The dealership has a small campground (50 amp hookup with water and sewer avail-able) to spend a night or two - for free. We’ve already had visitors this summer, so stop by, we’d love to meet all of you!

If you’ve only been reading these articles and haven’t actually taken the plunge and joined us yet, we invite you to visit awhile and get to know us and get a feel for the benefits derived from our forum. To get to the AC Yahoo site, go to the Ameri-can Coach Association web site at http://www.myameri-cancoach.com and click on the “Yahoo” logo at the bot-tom of each page. I can just about guarantee you won’t regret it!

TIPS and TRICKS By DEBBIE DARBY

Today I would like to share with you some great uses for your microwave. We all have them in our coach and most of us use them daily. Microwave ovens provide a fast and expedient way to prepare a variety of foods. They also have a variety of others uses that might surprise you. I am sure most of you have heard of some of them, but hopefully I have a few you haven’t tried! (Note: not all coaches have the same microwave. Times and cooking levels may vary according to your particular model) Cleans itself: Pour white vinegar into a microwave safe bowl and heat for 2 minutes. The liquid creates steam and makes messes easy to just wipe away. De-Clumps brown sugar: When brown sugar has become hard as a rock, moisten a paper towel, place it in the sugar bag, then zap in the microwave for 25 seconds. The moisture in the towel will transfer to the sugar and make it ready to scoop! (this may take a second try if the sugar is really solid) Disinfects sponges: According to the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), one of the most dangerous sources of disease-causing bacteria in your kitchen is your dish sponge. Stick your damp sponge in the microwave and zap it for 60 seconds. Doing this weekly can help destroy household germs. Juices Fruit: Before juicing an orange or lemon, microwave the uncut fruit for 10 seconds. Take it out and roll it on the counter a few times. The microwave will lessen the fibers inside the fruit and make it easier to juice every last drop! Make a heating pad: Fill the foot of a tube sock with rice, then sew or knot the top closed and microwave in 30 second increments until you reach the desired soothing temperature. The rice makes an inexpensive heating pad you can use over and over. (Just be careful not to overheat and burn the rice inside the sock.) My husband often gets cramps in his legs on a long drive. I use one of these and tuck it under his thigh to keep the cramps away. Peels Garlic: Nuke garlic cloves for 15 seconds. The water in the garlic steams and breaks down the bond between the clove and the skin for fast removal. Peels Veggie Skins: Hard squashes and root vegetables can be tough to peel. To make the job easier, place the vegetable in the microwave for 2-3 minutes on low power and the skin will be more pliable for peeling and cutting. Rescue Stale Bread: Wrap the bread in a moist paper towel and zap for 20 second increments. The moisture will soak into the bread and make it taste fresh again. Saves Stamps: To remove a stamp from a mislabeled envelope, put a drop of water on it and then micro for 10-15 seconds. It should peel off easily. Smoothes Crystallized Honey: If your honey has crystallized, simply remove the lid and heat the honey in the microwave in 30-40 second increments until it returns to its original smooth texture. (Do not microwave honey in a plastic container) Toast Nuts: Put a handful of nuts in a microwave safe bowl and toss with a little oil. Micro in 60 second increments, stirring after each minute. Overall cooking time varies depending on the type of nut, but expect it to take around 5 minutes. This tip also works for pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

Rolling RecipesAh, SUMMER! My favorite time of the year. Blue skies, beach time, sandals, long sunlit days, and delicious, juicy summer fruit. And do I even need to mention the 4th of July! When I decided to make this for the newsletter article, my main squeeze, Ben, said “it’s suppose to be about cooking and there is no cooking in this recipe!” But of course that is why I liked it. It’s gorgeous, a show stopper, fresh, delicious, easy, and there is no heating up the kitchen. And since I just opened packages of fruit, there was not much dish washing going on, other than the colander! You can throw this together in about 15 minutes. The majority of that time is spent washing and drying the fruit. This looks fabulous on a white tray, but my white tray is gi-normous! So I took a smaller sized jelly roll pan and covered it in white parchment paper to try and simulate a white tray. But you are the master of your kitchen, so you decide how you want the final outcome to look. You can also be creative and lay the fruit on top of a white sheet cake, but these white chocolate-covered pretzels (yogurt pretzels also work) look great and are a huge timesaver. Plus, they add a nice crunch between the fruit. Enjoy! Happy Summer, Happy 4th of July!

5 – 6 cups red fresh fruit (cherries, strawberries, raspberries)

2 cups blueberries

3 cups white chocolate (or yogurt) covered pretzels

(And by the way, I did no measuring. I just started placing the fruit and pretzels on the tray.)

Directions:

Wash and dry fruit. (Eat a couple to ensure they are ripe and sweet…eat a couple more…)

Place a small bowl in the top left hand corner of your tray and fill with blueberries.

Lay out the fruit and pretzels to represent the stripes of the flag.

That’s it, you are done. Now sit back and soak in the ooooohs and ahhhhhhhhs!
