Remembering the Great War, 1918-2018

8/20 and 22 No Lecture on Tuesday at Janet Leigh

George Yagi, Professor at S.J. Delta Community College and at Pacific

The First World War was one of the bloodiest conflicts in modern history, with an estimated 41 million casualties, including soldiers and civilians. Known as the lost generation, their deaths created a massive void in society, which could never be repaired. As we approach the 100th anniversary of the ‘War to End All Wars’ on November 11, 2018, this lecture will commemorate the fallen and the families they left behind. Beneath the Scarlet Sky 8/27, 28 and 29Michael Lella, Son of Pino Lella

Speaking about the untold true story of his father Pino Lella and his role in the “Forgotten Italian Front” of World War II, as told by author Mark Sullivan in Amazon’s #1 Best Seller Beneath A Scarlet Sky. Michael Lella worked closely with author Mark Sullivan in the research and the writing of the book. He now spends his spare time traveling and sharing his father’s epic story. A recent movie deal has been signed by Columbia Pictures and Pascal Productions starring British actor Tom Holland (of Spider-Man fame) to play the role of Pino Lella in Beneath A Scarlet Sky.

No lecture 9/3, 4 and 5 due to Labor Day holiday.

What is Orientalism?

9/10, 11 and 12Renata Bricka, MA in Fine Arts, Art History and Opera Costume Designer

An interesting look into the 19th century Fine Arts: painting and sculpture, produced in Europe, purchased by many well-to-do Americans. Using examples from our Haggin Museum collection, we will explore the art history of painting and sculpture in the style that is closely connected to the historical and political developments around the world produced in the second half of the 19th century. These styles were influencing all the arts, including the fine arts, music, fashion and jewelry. During these fashionable-to-travel times, when many who could afford it, would travel to exotic destinations, such as Egypt, Morocco, Turkey and Iran. The arts were an important part of their nostalgia and served as souvenirs. Valley Fever

9/17, 18 and 19Helen Gross, OLLI Member, Volunteer and Committee Co-Chairperson

What is coccidioides immitis? Helen Gross will explain this sometimes deadly disease which is endemic to areas of the San Joaquin Valley, the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The lecture will focus on the causes, symptoms, treatments and possible vaccine to prevent it. If you have a Valley Fever story (Cocci’s common name) to share, come prepared to witness your experiences and help those who do not know of this disease. Helen’s focus will be presenting information about Valley Fever and to relate her own story. It is hoped this lecture might one day save a life of someone you know. A video

produced by U.C. Davis will also be shown, explaining what Valley Fever is and how it is treated.

The Folk Singers and the Bureau, Part 1

9/24, 25 and 26Aaron Leonard, Writer and Historian

The most prominent folk singers of the twentieth century, Woody Guthrie, ‘Sis Cunningham, Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Burl Ives, were also political activists with various associations with the American Communist Party. As a consequence the FBI, along with other governmental and right wing organizations were monitoring them. Using music, video, news clippings, and records from extensive Freedom of Act filings-including never before released material-this lecture will bring to life these artists and the systematic way they were subject to government surveillance and suppression. (Part II will be offered in Spring 2019)

Stockton Magnificent, Barrio Bravo: Public Muralism in Stockton and Mexico City.

10/1, 2 and 3Josh Salyers, Digital Curator at Pacific Library

Public muralism is often used by communities as a form of activism and a way to tell a community’s story. In this presentation, we will compare the uses of muralism in two different cities (Mexico City and Stockton) to explore how murals communicate local identities and reclaim city space. After a brief discussion of his work studying Mexico City murals, Josh will engage the audience in a study of local Stockton murals, practicing interpretation and exploring what stories the artists wanted to tell about this city.

Reversing History: From Hard Times to Good Time Remedy

10/8, 9 and 10Gene Bigler, Retired Visiting Professor

Contemporary experience contrasts with the rise of Fascism which was a hard times remedy. We will explore the historical roots of earlier authoritarian episodes in both the U.S. and other countries to emphasize the difference in our current experience and show how authoritarianism differs from more millennial movements, such as communism.

Authoritarianism across the Globe: Some Common Threads of our Modern Malaise 10/15, 16 and 17Gene Bigler, Retired Visiting Professor

We will look closely at the experience of a few countries, especially Venezuela, the Philippines, Turkey, Hungary, and Russia, to identify underlying similarities of recent experience and how they compare with the rise of Fascism in the early 20th Century.

Authoritarianism in the U.S.: Does the Strong Man Ethos Put the U.S. in the Same Boat?

10/22, 23 and 24Gene Bigler, Retired Visiting Professor

Critics of the Trump Administration claim that his approach represents a turn toward authoritarianism here. How valid is the claim, and what does history and contemporary experience suggest about how authoritarianism can be resisted?

The Legal Principles Affecting Decisions at the End of Life

10/29, 30 and 31John Sims, Professor of Law, McGeorge School of Law

California’s End of Life Option Act (EOLA) took effect on June 9, 2016, and since then over 500 individuals have ended their lives with drugs obtained from

physicians through use of the law’s procedures. A court ruling temporarily interrupted the operation of EOLA during the spring of 2018, but currently the law is once again effective, and an appellate court is reviewing the lower-court decision that struck down the law on procedural grounds. Even apart from the legal technicalities surrounding EOLA, the debate over physician assistance in ending one’s life is an intense one. There is substantial support for EOLA, which closely followed the path taken by Oregon twenty years ago, and several other states have more recently adopted similar statutes. However, there is also strong opposition, based on moral principles and on fears of abuse. This debate raises a number of interesting constitutional issues, and also calls for renewed attention to the use of advance directives for health care, and to the medical issues raised by palliative care for extreme pain.

The Future of Production Work: Manufacturing and Logistics Service

11/5, 6 and 7William Price, Emeritus Professor Operations and Engineering Management

Today, we are at the beginning of a Fourth Industrial Revolution. As entire industries adjust, most occupations are undergoing a fundamental transformation. While the impending change holds great promise, the patterns of consumption, production and employment created by it also pose major challenges requiring proactive adaptation by corporations, governments and individuals. The current technological revolution need not become a race between humans and machines but rather an opportunity for work to truly become a channel through which people recognize their full potential.

‘Tis the Season: Holidays and Human Identity

11/12, 13 and 14Rex Hamilton, Professor of General Education and Religious Studies

Holidays—seasonal, civil, national, and religious—are an important and essential component of human culture. This

lecture will examine some of the ways that these important days and weeks function in terms of personal and social identity. To do so we will engage some of the features of holidays: their history and development including the narratives that give them content, their personal and social functions and effects, and their ritual and material accoutrements like parades, music, services, food, and drink!

No lecture 11/19, 20 and 21 due to Thanksgiving holiday.

Note Taking and Brain Activity: Validation of Old School Tools

11/26, 27 and 28Paula Sheil, San Joaquin Delta English Professor and director of The Write Place

Paula will discuss the benefits of cursive writing, the resultant brain activation, and its effects on learning. Her topic draws on the work of María A. Pérez Alonso at the University of Applied Sciences, Austria and that of Karin H. James and Laura Engelhardt in Psychological and Brain Sciences, at Indiana University. The research has implications for anyone needing to get more from what he or she reads. For teachers, this research is especially important because students learn more material by writing and mental editing as they take notes. Faculty should stop giving away PowerPoint slides or letting students take phone “pictures” of the notes on the board and require handwritten notes.

Lessons of the Stockton Bankruptcy

12/4: Janet Leigh Theatre Only

Robert Benedetti, Professor Emeritus This lecture will describe three lenses through which to view and evaluate Stockton’s bankruptcy. First, Stockton will be placed in the context of the political economy of two “world cities” San Jose and San Francisco. Secondly, Stockton’s relationship with the State of California will be analyzed. Finally, Stockton’s political environment and its evolution since the mid-20th Century will be explored.

Join us for Rosie Friday and meet an actual Rosie, a Home Front worker from World War II.
