Fall King of the Beach ... I cannot believe another year is in the history books!

The Fall seems to be lining up nice with acres of bait and Spanish on the beach as far as the eye can see. Angler photos have already started to pour in on facebook indicating the KINGS are starting to arrive. We look forward to a good solid season. Keep the pics coming!

Also, we are proud to announce our partnership with Fishing for Hope Food Drive with Capt. Bill Miller, Average Angler Glen Pla and Reel Animals

Capt. Mike Anderson. We will be collecting food items and selling turkey certificates during the King of the Beach and Mad Beach Food Fest to help “SINK THE BOAT”. Help us exceed this years goal of 10,000 lbs of food. Help someone in need during this years holiday season and get a chance to win a prize. See the ad on page 34 for all the details.

Now, did I mention this is the 19th annual Fall King of the Beach? That will make next year the 20th Anniversary!! I can’t give away all the secrets just yet, but lets just say the largest fishing tourney and party on the West Coast is about to even BIGGER!!! Look for announcements to start in the beginning of 2013!

I am King - I can do Anything


Growing up in Treasure Island, I spent my days fishing with friends and family. I developed a true passion for the ocean and all things nautical. I spent much of my leisure time snorkeling, diving, spear fishing, sailing, and fishing.

I purchased my first boat a HydraSport in March 2000. My Dad had retired and was re-cooperating from bypass surgery. My plan was to spend some “reel time” with him out on the sea doing what we both loved. We did get to enjoy a few memorable trips together on the boat. Sadly, I lost my Dad unexpectedly in January 2002. While working through my loss I was fortunate to meet AJ McLauchlin. AJ and I started fishing together, attending Old Salts meetings and became members. We really took an interest in Kingfish Tournament fishing and started bringing our kids out to fish with us too. My wife, daughter and sisters began fishing the Ladies Tournament…they were hooked!

I take my Dad with me in my heart every time I am out there. I spent years participating, watching other teams win King of the Beach. I knew I wanted that trophy…,just once…,to have that feeling not only for me…,but for my Dad. Years of placing in the tournament…,one year so close to 25th Place…,missing it by 1/10th of an ounce.

A few weeks prior to the KOB I asked several of my co-workers if they would like to fish the KOB. They were Todd Woolf, Tim Dixon and TJ Cassidy. They agreed to fish, a good decision. We decided in lieu of taking the Blue-Runner On Top, we would take Exiting the Net (single engine boat). I thought if we caught a decent fish it could be weighted in either the single or overall division bettering our chances since Tim and TJ had never fished a tournament before. We caught bait on Friday and the team met at the boat at 5:00 am Saturday. The wind was howling that morning and I had made the decision the night before to fish a spot where I have caught Kingfish before. Team Exiting the Net set out and Tim pointed her south for well over two hours. It was dark, the seas were 2 to 4 feet, with an occasional 5 footer thrown in for good measure. As we approached our spot we noticed a shrimp boat anchored within a few miles from our final destination. We stopped, put out our baits and made a few loops around her until she

pulled her anchor and left. We did not get a single strike. I decided we would not make another stop until we reached our spot. Fifteen minutes later we were there and found that there were two other boats fishing the area. We put out our baits and trolled around for an hour before we got our first strike. I was first to the rod, the fish made a great first run. I fought her for about 20 minutes before she got wrapped around the anchor line of one of the boats fishing the area. We set the baits back out, this time TJ was first to the fishing rod. We were able to land this fish, however it was not what we were fishing for. It was a 25 pound Amberjack and TJ was happy as it

was the largest fish he has ever caught. Baits go back out again, a few more jack and a nice 45 Cobia were landed. Tim told me at the time the Cobia was the biggest fish ever landed on Exiting the Net.

Not having the luck we wanted, we made the decision to fish another spot a few miles away. As we arrived I could see the Idle Time fishing team hooked up on a fish. All I could hear was the dream screaming on the reel. We put out the baits and immediately had two strikes. Todd and TJ grabbed the rods and fought two nice 25 pound AJs to the boat. We trolled around for about 30 more minutes when she hit a blue runner on top. I grabbed the rod as she was smoking line off the reel. After a 30 minute battle I could see a large silver shadow below the boat. I knew it was a good fish. I was able to get her boat side, however Todd grazed her with the gaff. She took off on another long run. I finally got her boat side again and told Todd and TJ to sink the gaffs into her. They pulled her aboard and she hit the deck. I told the team “I think we just won KING OF THE BEACH!!!” We decided to take a nice slow ride back to the scales.

I called my wife on the way in to tell her, “Honey, this is NOT a drill. Call everyone, I got it this time!” It was nice to see 30 friends and family waiting for us when we arrived at the weigh in. We weighed in early and then sat back and enjoyed the ride. The ride of possibly being on top…possibly being number 1. And then it happened…the weigh in closed…KING OF THE BEACH…we did it! The next two hours were some of the best in my life, celebrating with everyone but most of all the congratulations and well wishes that came our way from Old Salts that I have known for years like James Malz, the peer recognition is what has meant the most to me.

2012 has been an amazing year of tournament fishing for me and I have enjoyed every moment. I have been fortunate to share these moments with Team Exiting the Net as well as having the privilege to fish with Team Delosa’s The Dough Maker and have found some terrific friends in Jim Breazeale, Morgan Dominque and Hale Wilson.

As we had our moment on stage with Tom Verdensky, Jill Foraker and other Old Salts board members, We Are The Champions on the speaker, champagne raining down on us, the trophy over our heads, our catch in our hands. The most memorable moment came with the cape on my shoulders and the crown on my head. And I finally knew….So this is what this feels like to be KING.
