The Sigma SD1, launched in 2011, was the first camera equipped with the new larger size Foveon X3 Direct Image Sensor. With its expanded area, this sensor achieved an extraordinary resolution of 46 mega pixels. Pairing with Sigma's Dual TRUE II image processing engine assures high-speed processing of such massive volumes of information. The result is significantly higher image quality without sacrificing Sigma’s renowned natural realism. All new Sigma cameras are equipped with this next-generation Foveon image sensor to better realize our ideals of photographic performance.

All new lenses, body and user interface

Along with the Foveon Merrill image sensor, virtually every aspect of the DP series has received a thorough upgrade. We have optimized the lenses, body and user interface to bring out the larger sensor’s maximum potential. Although the sensor is larger, the body is as compact as ever.

A new focusing ring on the lens lets you manually adjust focus with your left hand while keeping your right on the shutter release. We have also added a command dial for shutter speed, aperture, menu selection and other operations. This new user interface gives you direct and convenient control so you can concentrate on taking great photos.

The image sensor in Sigma digital cameras uses three layers of photodiodes to gather the entire red, green and blue color information of light, forming the world’s one and only full color capture system. All three primary colors of light passing through the lens are captured at every pixel location on the image sensor. Therefore, this innovative sensor technology does not depend on a color filter array (CFA). The reward is naturally faithful color images that capture the ambience of a scene with dramatically vivid realism.
