UNLEASHING POSSIBLITIES: BUILDING A BETTER COMMUNITY THROUGH KINDNESS TO ANIMALS
IN THIS ISSUE
The St. Joseph Animal Shelter Rebuild was funded through a Purina Trust Grant, which is available to organizations in any city in which there is a Purina factory. The application was submitted by Purina employees Drs. Annie Valuska and Melanie Barnes, along with support from Dr. Kay Dowling (the PTC site director) and Matt Sadler (the factory manager). The total grant was for $100,000, of which $30,000 of it was used to fund the makeover.
The focus of the rebuild is to help get more pets adopted! We will accomplish this through an outdoor dog meet‐and‐greet area, which will give potential adopters the opportunity to see the dogs off leash in a more comfortable, low‐stress setting than the shelter currently provides, and through the addition of a cat group room with an adjoining "catio." The group room will allow the shelter to house more cats, and it will also allow the cats to meet people in a relaxed, cheery, home‐like environment that will make it easier for people to imagine them as their pets. The new cat area will also improve cat welfare by giving the kitties exercise, fresh air, and social enrichment!
Rescue Rebuild (a program of Greater Good), headed up by director Bryna Donnelly, is the
group which has the expertise to get the makeover accomplished. You can learn more about them here: http://rescuerebuild.org/. Rescue Rebuild has had their makeovers featured on the Animal Planet show "My Cat from Hell" with Jackson Galaxy!
The shelter has been doing a fantastic job of getting the dogs adopted, but the shelter has been running out of available cages for cats. This room will allow the Shelter to continue caring for more of those cats and give them a chance to find a loving home and by giving them a beautiful space and an enriched environment. This makeover is a great start, but the Friends of the Animal Shelter has even bigger plans for the animals of St. Joseph, MO. Within the next 5 years, we hope to build an entirely new shelter that will be 100% transformed from a simple animal shelter for stray animals into a valued community space that provides a great environment for pets before they go to their forever homes.
25 Volunteers helped the Rescue Rebuild group to accomplish this rebuild. Volunteers were from Shelter staff, St. Joseph Community, Friends of Animal Shelter and Purina Company. Thanks to all who helped!

Howlapalooza To celebrate the City Dog Park at Corby, the 2nd annual Howlapalooza was held July 23, 2016. The event was hosted by Jenna Keyes, the Humane Education Officer and a member of the shelter staff. The Friends of the Animal Shelter also hosted a Pet Preview at the park. The theme was "Carnival O' Canines" featuring a variety of carnival style activities for the community members and their own canine companions. Thanks to all who attended and assisted with the event.

The Friends of the Animal Shelter held a golf fund raiser on September 12. The event’s presiding sponsor was Kirby Joy of Reece Nichols Real Estate. The charity golf tournament was a 4‐person scramble format. Thirteen teams registered for the event. The event raised $7,000 for the St. Joseph Animal Shelter. All money raised will go for medical expenses for the animals at the shelter. Additionally, five committee members and five volunteers brought dogs to view during the event. The 2nd annual 5K run took place on April 16, 2016. The event was held at the SW Parkway by the Bode Ice Arena. The event attracted 367 participants in the 5K run/walk. In addition, the Friends of the Animal Shelter had 12 volunteers helping with registrations and course direction. The annual event encourages participants to bring their pet along with them on the run/walk.

Baxter Baxter was adopted by the Chamberlin family. Baxter was a Pups for Parole Dog. Read about their story under BAXTER
BAXTER Baxter was adopted by the Chamberlin family from the Puppies for Parole program. He has been a great addition to our family. We have 4 cats, so I was worried at first, when we brought him home, but he has had no issues with any of the cats, in fact, our newest addition, loves to run on him. Baxter is big, so he handles our now 6‐year‐old son very well. Baxter has a ton of energy and loves to meet people on our walks. He is a very loving dog, who just thinks he is lap size and just wants to be loved. He sleeps at the foot of our bed or in my son’s bed every night. Baxter loves to play fetch and generally just loves to run. He loves to go camping with us and we try to take him wherever we are going but because of his size, not all places let us take him. We do love our Baxter and hope to be able to get him a friend from the shelter soon. I would recommend the Puppies for Parole program to anyone. My family got a great companion from this program. H0pe the program continues to do well!
ODESSA
Odessa was adopted by Melissa Dunlap and her son, Ayden from the animal shelter. Melissa said, “We love how quiet she is, but once she sees her mouse game on a phone, she is right there trying to catch the mouse. She is also quite the hider and likes to hide under a bed or now, her new hiding place is under the baby crib. WE spoil her with special food, grain free. She is a welcome addition to our family, such a sweetheart.”
HENNY “Henny” a German Shepherd, ended up in St. Joseph, all the way from Wichita, KS. The family saw her on the Petfinder and came to redeem her. They were happy to be reunited with her.
PUMPKIN Claire Jobes sells rubber paws bracelets for our group as a fundraiser and she has adopted “Pumpkin”.

On June 16, 2016, two Friends of the Animal Shelter Volunteers were honored at the YMCA Women of Excellence Luncheon. Jeannette James was awarded "Y" woman of Merit for 2016 and Dr. Melanie Barnes was nominated for Woman in Volunteerism.

The Niemann family had been looking for a pointer dog and found “Andy’s” picture on the Puppies for Parole website. The family has had pointer dogs before and know the pointer breed and personality. They live in South Dakota and had plans to come to St. Joseph on their way to Branson for a family vacation. They offered to pay room and board for him, purchase food, and do whatever they could to be sure he would be their dog! They kept in contact with Kathy (Puppies for Parole program) weekly. Andy walked in the Apple Blossom Parade in May and pictures were sent to the family of Andy in the parade. He was quite the star!!! He was very personable wanting to shake hands with everyone, sat down in front of the children, and waited for them to pet him. He was wonderful with everyone!
The BIG day finally arrived when the family met Kathy at the prison for a “meet and greet” to be sure Andy would be the right fit for them. Andy has a very charming personality and he won them over immediately. Andy loves sneaking food. His family was unloading groceries from the car and accidentally left the back car door open. Andy jumped in the car, found a loaf of bread, drug it out of the car…ran off and ate the whole loaf!!! The first weekend they got Andy, he went camping, which Andy loved. He has since been on many camping trips with his new family and has had a wonderful time meeting new people, swimming in the lake, and going on lots of new adventures. If Andy could talk he would say, “thank you for adopting me!!!”

Friends of the Animal Shelter Volunteers Honored
Jenna Keyes received the prestigious “John Rhodes” Award from James Donovan at the Missouri Animal Control Association Banquet. This award is for the Animal Welfare Professional that goes above and beyond the call of duty, who exemplifies the role of this profession, and has made great changes that better the Animal Welfare Profession.
Dr. Annie Valuska received the “Paws for Applause’ Award in recognition of her support and dedication to the St. Joseph Animal Control and Rescue Shelter and the pets and residents of the St. Joseph Community. She received this award from the Missouri Animal Control Association at their annual conference on September 21, 2016.
The St. Joseph Animal Shelter staff and the Friends of the Animal Shelter have been working closely these past few years to update the care and improve the adoption rates of our shelter animals. New programs, medical care, advertising and transfer of animals to other animal shelter facilities have enabled our shelter to be a modern example of operational excellence.
One thing, though, is holding us back and that is the present shelter building and location. The building was not designed to be an animal shelter. It is old and has continual maintenance issues. The shelter is difficult to find, cannot be seen from the road and has very little parking or outdoor green space.
The Friends of the Shelter have taken on the project of building a new animal shelter that would be a wonderful facility for the animals, as well as an inviting place for adults and children to visit and learn about animal care. We think it would increase adoptions, lower maintenance costs, provide a healthier atmosphere for the animals and create a shining symbol for the city of St. Joseph; a city that already has a national reputation for wonderful animal product companies.
St. Joseph is a town with many animal lovers, and even at this early stage of the fundraising campaign, we are hearing enthusiastic voices. We have received a sizable grant from Nestle Purina. A local architect and photographer have volunteered their skills and services to help get the facility built. Presently we are looking for land on which we could build the new shelter or a building we could renovate. Anyone wanting to donate funds or property would find tax deductions from these donations and naming rights in the building. The citizens of St. Joseph and its animals deserve a modern, state‐of‐the‐art animal shelter.
