    Fall Is a BeautIFul tIme

    to VIsIt amIsh Country

    Since 1865, when three Pennsylvania

Mennonite families rst settled in central

Illinois, the area has become known sim-

    ply as Amish Country.

    The communities of Arthur, Arcola,

    Tuscola, Taylorville and Sullivan are

home to about 4,500 rural Amish. Their

    presence, combined with their English

neighbors, have together created a haven

    for tourism.

    Arthur

Big-box stores and modern lifestyleshopping centers are in stark contrast to

the Amish inuences so evident in the vi-

brant central shopping district in down-

town Arthur. Located in central Illinois in

the heart of Amish Country, the town

is abuzz with Amish-owned shops selling

    hand-crafted clothes, custom cabinetry,

    home furnishings and unique gifts.

There arent any chain restaurants in

    Arthur. Instead, locally owned eateries

that serve lovingly prepared comfort food

abound. Dont forget, all Amish businesses

    are closed on Sunday.

Central Illinois best Labor Day cel-

ebration, the Amish Country Cheese Fes-

tival, has been expanded this year to three

days, Sept. 4, 5 and 6. Enjoy the festivalatmosphere throughout Arthur. Eat a corn

dog, sample the free cheese, take in a trac-

tor pull, watch a parade and listen to some

music. Of course, visitors are encouraged

to shop the sales in town.

    Arthur hosts several annual festivals

and ongoing events, such as the Down-

town Arthur Market, held the third Satur-

day of every month on the Gazebo park-

ing lot and featuring an array of crafts

and antiques. The Gunny Sack Revue is a

weekly favorite. Held every Thursday at 7

p.m., this bluegrass jam attracts, on aver-

    age, more than 100 listeners.

Located just to the southwest of Ar-thur, The Great Pumpkin Patch runs Sept.

15 through Oct. 31, open daily from 9

a.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors can pick their own

pumpkins from the patch or select from a

variety of pumpkins, squash, and gourds

from the boulevard. Meet Wanda the

    Witch and the Werewolf.

A barbecue competition on Oct. 8 and

9 will attract more than 50 top competitive

barbecue teams from across the country.

There will be plenty of barbecue vendors,

large and small smokers and equipment to

check out. Bring the family to Downtown

Arthur for this fun, and tasty, event.

A great way to see the Arthur Amish

Country is to book a tour through ACM

Tours. Visit the Arthur Amish shops andenjoy a meal in an Amish home. To book,
