From the SCC Foundation Executive DirectorDear Friends,

The Southeast Community College Educational Foundation has had a positive impact on countless students because of generous donors like you. And for that, we say Thank You!

But a simple “Thank You” seems inadequate. So, as we’ve featured in previous annual reports, testimonials from SCC students who have benefitted from your generosity via a Foundation scholarship can be found on the following pages of this annual report. Our students are so grateful, no matter the size of the scholarship.

It’s important for you to see, even with a small number of personal letters, the impact you have had and are having on our students. Providing opportunities when it didn’t seem possible is what it’s all about.

The mission of the SCC Educational Foundation is to support the vitality and growth of SCC to benefit the students, staff and communities it serves through the development and wise use of financial resources. We want to ensure that SCC students have the opportunity to succeed. There’s that word again: opportunity.

The need for financial assistance is real for the majority of our students. Most SCC students work to help pay the bills, and some work a lot to support a family, all the while going to school to try to make their life, and the life of their family, better.

Scholarship support has become an increasingly important source of tuition assistance for our students. While grants and loans serve a purpose, scholarships instill in our students a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment that can lead to great things. Your support is the difference maker for many of our SCC students.

On behalf of the entire Foundation Board, thank you for your interest and commitment to the SCC Educational Foundation and to SCC. Together we are providing tremendous opportunities for our students and are making an investment in the future.

Jack J. Huck, Executive Director SCC Educational Foundation

From the SCC PresidentOn behalf of the Southeast Community College Board of Governors, administration, faculty, and staff, I want to thank the Southeast Community College Educational Foundation and all of its generous and thoughtful contributors. SCC is committed to its mission of providing accessible, dynamic and responsive pathways to career and technical, academic transfer and continuing education programs. SCC seeks to create futures through inquiry, knowledge and application. The SCC Educational Foundation plays a critical role in supporting this mission. This past year the Foundation awarded more than 3,700 scholarships totaling more than $2.4 million.

Over the past 10 years, SCC has graduated more than 16,435 students in a wide array of career/technical programs in health sciences, manufacturing, business, construction, arts, sciences, agriculture, hospitality, food services, communications, and many other critical industries. Although open access to SCC’s programs is vital, program completion is one of the primary measures of student success. The SCC Educational Foundation has helped thousands of students earn their certifications and/or degrees.

I am very thankful for the contributors and supporters of the SCC Educational Foundation. Your commitment to SCC is truly a gift to not only our students but to the entire 15-county community we serve. Thank you for your generosity, commitment and thoughtfulness.

Paul Illich, President Southeast Community College

Ways to investCash Gift or PledgeThe most popular way to give is an immediate cash gift or a pledge paid over time.

EndowmentsA perpetual resource because the principle remains intact, and investment income is used to provide financial awards to students. A new endowment in your name or someone else’s requires a minimum gift of $5,000.

Bequests by Will or Living Trust DistributionDonors may specify a gift of cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, or personal property or give a percentage of their estate or the residual of the estate after gift bequests to family members.

Retirement Savings or Insurance BeneficiaryTo name the Foundation as one of the beneficiaries of retirement funds, the donor should make arrangements through the retirement fund’s administrator. Other ways to give include naming the Foundation a beneficiary of an insurance policy, assigning annual dividends, or donating a paid-up policy.

Real EstateGifts of real estate, whether private, commercial or agricultural, may be given to the Foundation.

Stocks, Bonds, SecuritiesAppreciated assets held for more than one year may be transferred to the Foundation and deducted at fair market value, up to 30% of your adjusted gross income, without incurring a capital gains tax.

Equipment and Other PropertyThe Foundation can accept equipment or other personal property that may be used by the College or may be easily converted to a liquid asset.

Matching GiftsSome employers match charitable donations given by their employees to qualified nonprofit organizations like the Foundation.

Charitable Gift AnnuitiesA donor can transfer gifts of cash, real estate, or appreciated securities worth $10,000 or more to the Foundation to fund an annuity agreement leading to lifetime income.

Charitable Remainder UnitrustsWith a gift of $50,000 or more, donors can establish a trust, ensure a lifetime income for themselves, and support SCC! As the value of the trust increases, so does the donor income.

Charitable Lead TrustsThe Charitable Lead Trust allows a donor to establish a trust for a specific length of time, assign interest income to the Foundation, and later reclaim the asset for the donor or the beneficiary.

Commodities Gift ProgramThis is for producers who wish to gift a quantity of produce such as corn, beans, wheat, etc. to the Foundation.

Acklie Charitable Foundation Makes Major Gift for New Diesel Technology FacilityThe Acklie Charitable Foundation made a significant gift toward the building.

“Today we are celebrating a new facility that will allow these outstanding faculty to train and inspire talented students in the finest diesel technology facility in the country,” said SCC President Dr. Paul Illich.

“We now have a state-of-the-art facility to match the top-notch program content we’ve always prided ourselves in having,” said Karl Eickhoff, Diesel Technology-Truck instructor. “We can’t wait to get settled into this new facility and watch the students take pride in the spaces in which they’re learning.”

Enrollment in Diesel Technology-Truck and Diesel-Ag Equipment Service Technology programs was solid for the 2020 Spring Semester, which was interrupted in March when the College shifted to remote learning due to COVID-19.

However, both programs were full for the 2020 Fall Semester.

The $13 million facility provides much-needed space for SCC’s diesel programs, as well as welding courses. The new space allows the programs to accommodate the most up-to-date equipment, as well as expand the number of students who enroll. Applications to diesel tech programs have increased over the past 14 years, indicating a strong student interest in the field.

“Nebraska is fortunate in so many ways, but one thing we are short on is enough manpower,” said Tonn Ostergard, Crete Carrier CEO & Chairman. “So it is extremely important that we have incredibly talented young people, and that we’re giving them the education and opportunities to stay right here in Nebraska.”

According to Eickhoff, shops are in constant need of diesel technicians. In February 2020, SCC’s Career Services Office posted 84 job openings for the diesel field alone. Many of the employers offer some form of tuition reimbursement or scholarship program to students.

Besides the lead gift from the Acklie Charitable Foundation, other businesses with named spaces inside the facility are Truck Center Companies, NMC Cat, and Inland Truck Parts & Service.

I’m a non-traditional first-generation student in the Academic Transfer program. I can’t quantify

the value of what I have received from pursuing my education at SCC. Let’s just say that it has opened new doors and windows I had not seen before. Thanks in part to this scholarship, I’ve been able to focus on my studies and maintain a high GPA. Thank you again for your investment in SCC and students like me. It means a lot to me that there are organizations with resources that can give. I hope to pay it back someday by way of service or scholarship donation. – Carina O.
