Membership Makes a Difference Dear Friend, Five years ago, my mother’s dementia got so severe that she needed round-the-clock care right away. I called Greenwood House to see if there was a room available for her. Much to my surprise and relief, the response was, “How is Thursday!” My grandmother had been a resident there 26 years earlier and my mom always told me, “When it’s time, just drop me off at Greenwood House.” Thank goodness her wish could be granted. Greenwood House’s membership campaign has enabled the provision of exemplary senior care for 80 years. Gifts to the campaign offset the $1M deficit between state reimbursement and actual cost of care. Before mom got there, she was so confused and we thought we were losing her. Then, arriving at Greenwood House, she was greeted by some familiar faces and so many smiling and energetic staff members. Within weeks she seemed to bounce back! For me it was a miracle. Three years later, my father took a fall that would forever leave him wheelchair-bound. And so it was that Rita and Paul would sit side by side in their wheelchairs at Greenwood House- holding hands like they had for their 65 years of marriage. They lived their last few years together at Greenwood House, where they got the best care possible. For the staff that took extra time to give my Dad a salute, the daily hug and kiss, the back scratch that he craved, sang to him for an hour straight on the day that he was dying, fed my mom every meal, laughed and cried with her, I am forever grateful. Please join me today in renewing or enabling new support to Greenwood House by making an annual gift or pledge. We are so fortunate for the care and professionalism of this non-profit home in our community. I’m honored to do my part to ensure we have Greenwood House for countless years to come. Through your generosity Greenwood House meets residents’ needs with the utmost skill and compassion. Please consider a personally meaningful gift to our 2019 Membership Campaign. Membership Makes a DifferenceDear Friend,

Five years ago, my mother’s dementia got so severe that she needed round-the-clock care right away. I called Greenwood House to see if there was a room available for her. Much to my surprise and relief, the response was, “How is Thursday!”

My grandmother had been a resident there 26 years earlier and my mom always told me, “When it’s time, just drop me off at Greenwood House.” Thank goodness her wish could be granted.

And so it was that Rita and Paul would

sit side by side in their wheelchairs at Greenwood House- holding hands like they had for their 65 years of marriage.

Sincerely,

Sherry Havier Grateful Family Member

Friends Circle Memory Café Art Program The September 10th Friends Circle Memory Café was a great success with loads of fun – placing attendees’ creative talents to the test.

ARTZ Philadelphia was there to provide motivation and inspiration. Many hands, inspiration, connection and heart were brought together to create a collective masterpiece.

Get Involved - Volunteer at Greenwood House! At Greenwood House, we believe that our volunteers are at the heart of what we do: compassionately care for others, a legacy that is honored in all we do. Our volunteers come from all ages, backgrounds, and experiences, and bring their time, talent, and energy to make a difference in the lives of residents on our

campus. Along with the difference our volunteers make, Greenwood House is a fun and vibrant place to volunteer. Whether you have just a few hours a month to volunteer or are available for a weekly assignment, we have an opportunity that is right for you. And if you are a college student interested in gaining practical experience in aging services or a teenager who needs to fulfill a community service requirement for school, we can work together to make your experience at Greenwood House rewarding and educational.

Read about one of our volunteer’s experience:Since July, Maddy Stoner is a weekly volunteer. She is a life-long resident of Ewing, NJ, and graduated in 2018 with a degree in business from The College of New Jersey. Maddy is an avid tennis player, and when not volunteering works nearly full time at the Hopewell Tennis and Swim Center. Also, she has recently decided to go back to school to pursue a career in nursing! Volunteering has inspired her to specialize in geriatrics. While at the Greenwood House, she enjoys leading exercises, talking tennis, and playing Rummikub!

For more information on volunteering opportunities, please contact Christine McCormick at [email protected] or 609-883-5391 ext. 393.

Meet Naomi Browar, Director of Social Work, MSW, LCSWNaomi Browar is the Director of Social Work at Greenwood House. She is in charge of managing the long and short term care of residents, which includes completing a bio-psycho-social assessment for each resident upon admittance. Her responsibilities range from providing supportive counseling to residents and their families to working with families, residents and home care companies to smooth the transition either into GWH, home, or another facility.

Naomi grew up in Forest Hills, NY, until the age of 12, moving with six other families to form a kibbutz (communal farm) in the suburbs of Tel Aviv, Israel. Naomi studied modern dance at The Juilliard School in New York City and received her teaching certification. Naomi was a Hebrew school teacher and directed an Israeli folk dance company.

During her teaching career, Naomi came in contact with social workers. As an avid reader of psychology, education, history, and politics, she started to learn more about the field. Naomi's husband, Robert Youdin, received one of the first Ph.D.'s in gerontology, is an author, and currently a research collaborator at Princeton University.

Both Naomi and her husband have private psychotherapy practices in Princeton. Naomi had previous experience in working with older adults at Jewish Family and Children's Services and was a social worker in the emergency room at Hunterdon Medical Center. Naomi also enjoys baking, cooking, singing, and listening to classical, urban folk and ethnic music.

Technology to Stay Active and Connected – It’s Never 2 Late Program (IN2L) Greenwood House is so excited to formally announce that we are beginning to roll out our new It's Never 2 Late™ (IN2L™) program! IN2L is an innovative computer system designed just for our residents and patients in our care. This touchscreen computer is programmed for activities, games, therapy, reminiscing, music, virtual travel, and so much more. We can't wait to get started!

One of our favorite features is the opportunity for our residents to connect with the world around them, particularly with their family and friends. We look forward to being able to get everyone acquainted with the user- friendly email, and best of all, our new Skype program! Skype is an easy-to-use live video chat service: you can download it for free and use it on any computer with a webcam and internet connection. With the click of a button, you can visit with family and friends on another continent, across the country, or down the hall!

There are many opportunities for family members to impact your loved one through IN2L in a meaningful way. If you're interested in emailing, setting up a video chat, or learning about the great ways you can interact with your loved one from the same room or a great distance, let us know!

We know that this addition to our community is going to be a great success! Feel free to stop by and experience IN2L first hand. We truly believe that It's Never 2 Late to have a little bit of fun with technology.

This technology was made possible by a grant through the Sephardic Foundation. Giving to Greenwood House is like giving to family because we touch almost

every family in our community.

When you make a donation to Greenwood House you are supporting: • Greenwood House Skilled Nursing Residence and the expansion of services to meet changing

community needs

• The latest technology available to support health restoration

• A robust roster of opportunities that support social, spiritual and emotional needs of all who relyon us

• The 10,000 meals a year provided to the community through our Kosher Meals on Wheels program

• High-quality outcome-focused rehabilitation services and our ability to care for medically complexconditions
