The 2019 Run in the Sun was held at the Sitting Bull College Student Services Center on Thursday June 27. We had an all-time record number with 96 attendees! This event had a color run, bouncy house, waterslide
and lunch. The event was free and all attendees received a Sitting Bull College T-shirt for participating in this event. We would like to extend a warm thank you to everyone who came out that day to join us and for all the
student volunteers that helped make this fun day possible!
If you missed this year’s event, we welcome you to come and participate at next year’s
Run in the Sun 2020.

Dakota/Lakota Summer Institute
The 13th Annual Dakota/Lakota Summer Institute was certainly another success for the books! Traditionally, the 3 week summer Dakota/Lakota language boot camp has been a collaborative effort between Sitting Bull College and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe; however, this year we added a new partnership with The Standing Rock CDC. There were several highlights of this year’s institute. Participants travelled in from across the Standing Rock Reservation and the globe including California, New Mexico, Colorado, Minnesota and Arizona. One student was returning to participate for her 3rd summer all the way from Transylvania! In addition to our own Standing Rock Community members, there were guest participants from all across Indian Country. We had members from Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Rosebud Sioux Tribe, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe attend this summer’s event. This year saw approximately 130 participants over the 3 week period. There were 14 official instructors and 4 “shadow” instructors who were in training to be lead instructors here on Standing Rock or in their respective tribes and communities.
Always and most importantly, we must recognize the importance of DLSI as an integrational opportunity. A place for our youth, our next generation of leaders, teachers and Dakota/Lakota language speakers to connect with our fluent elder speakers. This gives our future generations a direct connection to the knowledge, teachings and love given freely from the generations of the past.
Sponsors of the event included Sitting Bull College, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Bush Foundation – Community Event Sponsorship, National Archives and Records Association, National Endowment of the Humanities –Master Apprentice Grant, First Nations Development Institute – Native Language Immersion Initiative and various small donors and participants.

NATURE EPSCOR Summer Academy
Junior High Summer Research Camp
Nature EPSCOR Summer Academy has been around since 2008 with an average population of 24 high school students in attendance. The purpose of the Summer Academy is to generate an interest in math, science, engineering and technology among the high school students through involvement in hands-on and thought-provoking activities.
The students learned about environmental design technology. They did activities relating to the building of green roofs, construction of rockets, how to fly and operate drones, electrical circuits, construction of environmental friendly bridges, magnetism (magnetic fields) and team building activities.
These activities highlight real concepts of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as they applied to the Environmental and Engineering Sciences.
The purpose of the Sitting Bull College TCUP (Tribal College and University Program) Junior High Research Camp is to generate an interest in scientific research and the scientific methodology among our junior high school students. This is done through their involvement in hands-on and thought provoking scientific research projects.
The students took a field trip to the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery in Riverdale, ND. It was here where they learned about the different species of fish in the state and the recovery program for endangered species of fish, such as the Pallid Sturgeon (pictured above, right).

Farmer/Rancher Program
Sitting Bull College Farmer/Rancher Program is offering equipment operation instruction and demonstrations. Caine Demery and Laura Grijalva (pictured right) learning to drive the skid steer while Joe Dunn, the Farmer/Rancher Program Assistant, instructs them.
Titan Baker and Delaney Lester (pictured left) are setting up round pens for the upcoming projects with the Farmer/Rancher Program. These two young gentlemen have been working hard in the horse pastures and have spent many hours in our garden (pictured below).
Sitting Bull College Farmer/Rancher Program and The Oyate Community Development Corporation have collaborated on a Youth Incentive Agriculture Project. The Youth Incentive Ag Project includes a loan up to $5,000.00 to promote opportunities in Agricultural Businesses to minors or young adults between the ages of 10-20 years. A parent or
guardian is responsible for co-signing the loan and providing any collateral deemed necessary. Call Joe Dunn at 701-854-8068 if you are interested in the Youth Incentive Agriculture Project.
The Sitting Bull College garden has an array of vegetables and tuber crops that will later be cooked for theFarmer/Rancher Program trainings or sold to the communities to fundraise for clinics.
