LETTER FROM THE

CHAPTER PRESIDENT The fall is an exciting time here at the chapter as we gear up for our 11th Annual Women on the Move Luncheon to increase awareness of MS and advance women philanthropists; our Dinner of Champions Annual Gala where MS champions are celebrated; Bike MS NYC where lifelong connections are built and individual and collective milestones are achieved on an unforgettable ride; our Annual Meeting where we recognize supporters and volun-teers for their outstanding achievements in Fiscal Year 2016 and our Annual Day for Hispanic Families Living with MS where we connect with the community.

It is also the time of year that we resume our programs that contribute to the multi-dimensional journey of wellness. People affected by MS face complex challenges and overcoming them successfully can be navigated by making lifestyle and activity choices that contribute to one’s goal of attaining optimal well-be-ing. Accessing support groups or community excursions; joining webinars or tele-learning series on topics like diet, nutrition or the importance of sleep, can all help.

We hope you’ll take time and not only read this issue but share it with someone else so that they too will join the movement that is mobilizing people and resources to drive research for a cure and address the challenges of everyone affected by multiple sclerosis.

Sincerely,

Robin Einbinder President

STRIV ING FOR A “FUTURE W ITHOUT LIM ITS”“Multiple sclerosis’s impact has been profound,” says Donald Pettet, III, who was diagnosed with the disease in August 2013.

“It has altered my life dramatically in every aspect – goals, moti-vation, lifestyle and my beliefs.”

On Sunday, October 23, Donald and his team Kicking Asphalt will be among the thousands who will ride in Bike MS NYC. He says he is participating to raise awareness, have fun and inspire others with MS to do the best they can. He is further inspired by his two friends who were recently diagnosed with the disease and will ride on his team.

“Life is all about taking care of yourself and staying physically fit,” he explains. “When I was diagnosed, I realized that if I lived my life without being active, I wouldn’t have the best chance of having a future without limits.”

Donald is also cycling again as part of Genzyme’s “I Ride with MS” program designed specifically to support and provide visibility to cyclists living with MS.

“I think it’s important to educate others about multiple sclerosis and the response last year was amaz-ing,” he says. “People wanted to talk to me and understand what I am going through. I think it’s impor-tant to be part of the effort to show people living with MS or their care partners that an MS diagnosis is not a death sentence.”

JOIN US AT OUR ANNUAL MEETINGOur upcoming Annual Meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 15. This meeting pro-vides an opportunity to recognize supporters and volunteers for their outstanding achieve-ments and commitment to the Society’s mission to create a world free of MS.

The program brings together people living with MS, family members, friends, healthcare profes-sionals, volunteers, staff, fundraisers and board members to celebrate the chapter’s accomplish-ments and those who have helped make them possible.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Steven Schutzer, a physician-scientist who trained and was on the faculty at Cornell University Medi-cal College, New York Hospital and Rockefeller University before joining New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Schutzer will make a presentation entitled, “The Admiral Thor Hanson Biomark-ers in MS Project.” This Society-funded research focuses on analyzing proteins in spinal fluid in order to develop a new method of diagnosing early MS.

In addition, Dr. David Snyder, a neurologist on the faculty of Weill Cornell Medical College, will make a presentation entitled, “Efficacy and

Safety Profiles of Current and Emerging Disease Modifying Treatments”, which will be an update from the American Academy of Neurology on the changing landscape of the treatments for MS, along with benefit-risk assessment.

HELPING TO FIND A CURE THROUGH VOLUNTEERISMFor Lisa Cohen, volunteering has been a way to give back.

“I started volunteering with the chapter because I had received such helpful resources and genuine personal attention and concern from staff after I learned I had multiple sclerosis,” she says.

Lisa, diagnosed with MS in 2001, says “I wanted to help spread the word about the great work the chapter does for those of us living with MS and for those who care about and support the MS community.”

Since 2012, Lisa has been giving of her time at various events and is currently a Bike MS NYC Champion where she attends the event lending a personal connection to MS for riders who may not know anyone with the disease.

“Other events that I've been involved in range from speaking engagements, promotional videos, and ad campaigns to stuffing folders and event bags,” she says. “Basically, if they call me, I am going to say ‘YES!’”

Lisa highly recommends volunteerism as an important way to be involved with the chapter.

“Through volunteering you feel the satisfaction of being one of the connections in the network that keeps the Society's search for a cure moving and literally keeps those of us living with MS moving for as long as possible,” she says.

To learn more about volunteer opportunities, call Amber Young at 212-453-3258, or email [email protected]

RESEARCH

YOU CAN ADVANCE MS RESEARCHIn her late 30s, Maria Cote’s full-time work was being a mother to her three teenage chil-dren. Family life in their home in Snohomish, Washington was busy for her and her husband Don with pets, hiking and school projects. That changed just before her 40th birthday, in 2000, when Cote’s general practitioner referred her to a neurologist to investigate the tingling in her toes and ankles.

“She was running all these tests and I had no idea what she was looking for,” remembers Cote. “Then she said it was multiple sclerosis—which I had never heard of. I asked, ‘Is that fatal?”

She and her neurologist discussed several medi-cal options for disease-modifying therapies that were either injected or intravenously infused. Cote tried three of those options over the next several years, but her fear of needles affected her mental outlook and she found some of the side effects intolerable.

“I gave up,” she says.

But when her neurologist mentioned an upcoming clinical trial for an oral MS medica-tion, Cote felt a glimmer of hope. She volun-teered in hopes that the non-needle treatment

would be made available to her and others living with MS. While the study was a “lot of work,” she says it was worth it, and then some.

“That I wasn’t getting poked with a needle once a week made a big difference,” she says. And her participation helped guide the trial medication through the process necessary for U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval. There are many ways people living with MS and even family members can advance MS research. Cote chose to participate in a clinical trial of a potential MS therapy. Others have responded to surveys, shared their ideas, or participated in studies about symptom management, rehabilitation, wellness and diet approaches, and more.

Today, Cote works part-time in information technology and is the executive director of FurKidz 911 Connection, a nonprofit organiza-tion that provides foster care for dogs when their owners are hospitalized. She also participates in Bike MS® with her team, Swedish Smyelin Babes.

“I keep a positive attitude,” she says. “I feel like a strong person—not always—but that’s what I like to show to the world.”

LIVING WITH MS

NEW UNDERSTANDING OF THE COURSES OF MSBased on advances in the understanding of the disease process in MS and in MRI technology, the International Advisory Committee on Clinical Trials of MS has developed the following revision of the description of disease courses in MS:

• Elimination of the progressive-relapsing MS (PRMS) course. Individuals who were previ-ously diagnosed with progressive-relapsing MS would now be considered to have primary pro-gressive MS that is active. • Addition of clinically isolated syndrome (CIS). Although CIS may or may not convert to MS, those with CIS have a heightened risk of developing MS. Including CIS as a course of MS allows individuals to be treated with a disease modifying treatment.• Relaping-remitting MS (RRMS) can be de-scribed as active (with relapses and/or MRI ac-tivity) or not active AND worsening (increased disability following a relapse) or not worsening (no increase in disability following a relapse). • Primary-progressive (PPMS) and secondary-progressive (SPMS) can be active (with relapses and/or MRI activity) or not active AND progressing (gradually increasing disability) or not progressing. The revisions will facilitate conversations between people with MS and their healthcare providers

about what is happening with the disease at dif-ferent points in time so that they can work collab-oratively to identify optimal treatment strategies.

WELLNESS

OCCUPATIONAL WELLNESSOccupational Wellness is the ability to achieve a balance between work and leisure time, managing workplace stress and building positive relation-ships with co-workers. It may relate to paid em-ployment or volunteer activities. Because what we do for a living is a big part of our lives, it's impor-tant for our overall well-being to do what we find personally meaningful and rewarding.

When people are doing what they love, they deepen their sense of meaning and purpose.Ask yourself these questions• Do I enjoy going to work most days?• Do I have a manageable workload?• Do I have a good working relationship with my boss and co-workers?If you answered "No" to any of the questions, it may indicate an area where you need to improve your occupational wellness and our employment specialist can help you in this area.
