Fall 2015 Podium Finish at Club Champs The Fall 2015 season was full of many memorable events. However, perhaps one of the most satisfying was our 3rd place overall finish at the MAISA Club Championship held November 7-8 by U Penn and Villanova. The team qualified to compete in this event earlier in the season by being one of the top 18 club teams in the conference (out of 42 club teams!) Sophomores Vidar Minkovsky and Cailey Treyz sailed extremely well and won A division while seniors Brendan Brown-McCue and Helen Dufel finished a solid 6th in B division, allowing us to finish in 3rd place overall! This was our first year qualifying for this regatta and our best finish to date in an 18 boat fleet! It is a testament to how far our team has come in such a short time and we know that it is just the beginning of great things for SBU Sailing in the future! 1 Record Number of New Sailors Each season we welcome new sailors to the club/team. This semester we had 60 new people sail with us, a record! Some came once or twice, some got hooked and became very involved. Ultimately, this shows that there is a great interest in sailing at SBU and we are very happy we can provide sailing opportunities to any student who shows the interest! Record Number of Regattas It seems that we break the record for number of regattas attended each season, and Fall 2015 was no exception. Counting sending two teams to a few events, we competed in 20 regattas this season and had 27 sailors compete in at least one event! It is a great sign of how much the team is growing to be able to put together such a schedule. THE SEA WOLF The Newsletter of Stony Brook University Sailing

Fall 2015

Welcome “Princess Ella”! $ Last year we received a donation of a C&C 32 keelboat named “Princess Ella”. After a long process, she was finally able to set sail this Fall. She provides a wonderful opportunity for our members to get experience sailing a keelboat as well as providing an avenue to learn about the cruising aspect of sailing. A small group of our sailors used those new skills in October when they sailed her from Port Jefferson to her winter home in Greenport on the North Fork of Long Island, a journey of almost 60 miles! We are extremely excited to have “Princess Ella” and can’t wait to sail her again in the Spring!$

Fall 2015 Regatta Recap

We participated in 20 regattas this past season. We did very well at some, okay at others, and a few were a little rough. The most important thing is that we were out there and we know that being able to compete in so many events allowed everyone to learn a great deal. It allowed everyone to gain racing experience, not just the elite sailors.

!Membership Upgrade The team was upgraded to Regular members of MAISA (the highest membership level) at the Annual Meeting in Annapolis in December. SBU is now a full voting member of MAISA. Achieving this honor after having just started

the team in 2011 is another example of the hard work and dedication put in by so many members of the team, both past and present. In addition, sophomore Jessica Kurlander was elected as the North Region Undergraduate Representative for MAISA!$
