families and communities in the United States and

abroad. The United States is placing a high priority on

building up the nation's public health workforce.

A career in public health opens the door to diverse

opportunities in a variety of sectors such as federal,

private and non-governmental organizations.

Degrees

There are over 15 degrees available in the field of

1

What is Public Health?

Public health is the art and science of creating

healthy communities through education, research

and promotion of healthy lifestyles. In contrast to

the medical model of care whose aim is to

diagnose and treat illness and conditions after

they occur, public health’s goal is in health

promotion and disease or injury prevention.

Public health professionals analyze and develop

programs that protect the health of individuals,

public health by encouraging

people to make healthy

choices. For instance, you may

develop community-wide

education initiatives on health

topics ranging from nutrition

and fitness to injury and disease

prevention.

If you pursue a career in this

field, you may:

1. Reduce obesity and related

health problems in youth and

adult populations.

2. Improve the quality of life for

the growing population of

seniors.

3. Investigate and implement

health promotion programs,

such as smoking cessation

initiatives, water and sanitation

projects and occupational

safety courses.

Biostatistics

Biostatistics is the science that

applies statistical theory and

mathematical principles to

3

public health. They can be obtained

from a school or program of public

health accredited by the Council on

Education for Public Health (CEPH),

including undergraduate, master's,

and doctoral degrees.

The most common are:

• Master of Public Health

(MPH)

• Master of Health

Administration (MHA)

• Master of Science (MS)

• Master of Science in Public

Health (MSPH)

• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

• Doctor of Public Health

(DrPH)

• Doctor of Science (ScD)

Disciplines

There are over 20 major fields of

study. The five core disciplines are:

Behavioral science or Health

education

Those in this field help improve

and other sciences, including

techniques derived from

biochemistry and molecular

biology.

Health services administration

The field of health services

administration combines policy,

business and science in

managing the human and fiscal

resources needed to deliver

effective public health services.

Developing budgets for a health

department, creating polices for

health insurance companies or

directing hospital services are just

some of the careers you might

pursue. If you go into this

profession, you might work in

administration, resource

development or in the public or

private sectors. n

6

If you love science, are good at

seeing "the big picture," and tend

to be a team player, this could be

the perfect health career for you.

Epidemiology

When food poisoning or an

influenza outbreak attacks a

community, the "disease

detectives" or epidemiologists are

asked to investigate the cause of

disease and control its spread.

Epidemiology is the study and

control of disease or injury

patterns in human

populations. Professionals in this

field use statistical analysis, but

their approach and methods are

distinctly different than what

biostatisticians use.

Epidemiologists must take into

account various hereditary,

behavioral, environmental and

health care factors; they also

must make extensive use of the

contributions of biological, clinical

5

research in medicine, biology,

environmental science, public

health and related fields. Public

health biostatisticians use

mathematical and scientific

methods to determine the cause

of disease and injuries and to

identify health trends within

communities.

For instance, if you go into this

career, your research may include

estimating the number of deaths

from gun violence or determining

trends in drunk driving injuries.

Environmental health

Complex interactions between

human genetics and our physical

surroundings can give rise to a

variety of diseases and health

conditions - including asthma,

cancer, and food poisoning.

Environmental health professionals

improve public health by focusing

their efforts on identifying and

addressing these environmental

risk factors.

New Research Shows MIND Diet Slows Cognitive Decline

1

Scientists have long touted the

benefits of healthy diets in the

prevention of diseases such as

diabetes and heart disease.

However, the latest in nutrition

research has shown that eating a

healthy diet – specifically a

Mediterranean diet – can

actually reduce the cognitive

decline associated with aging. In

a recent study, Researchers at

2

Chicago’s Rush University Medical

Center showed that elderly

people who followed the

Mediterranean-DASH Diet

Intervention for

Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND)

diet were 7.5 years younger

cognitively during a period of

about 5 years than those who

adhered the most poorly.

3

What is the MIND diet?

The MIND diet is a hybrid

between the Mediterranean diet

and Dietary Approaches to Stop

Hypertension (DASH) diet, which

have been shown to reduce the

risk for hypertension, myocardial

infarction, and stroke. According

to Dr. Morris, the author of the

study, “the MIND diet modifies the

Mediterranean and DASH diets to

highlight the foods and nutrients

shown through the scientific

literature to be associated with

dementia prevention.”

The MIND diet consists of two

groups of foods: 10 “brain-

healthy” food groups to eat and

five unhealthy food groups to eat

less of.

Brain-Healthy Foods

Leafy Greens

Kale, spinach, broccoli, collards

and other greens are packed

with vitamins A and C and other

6

Nuts

Nuts contain healthy fats, fiber

and antioxidants. The MIND diet

recommends eating nuts at least

five times a week.

Berries

Berries are the only fruit

specifically recommended in the

MIND diet. The MIND diet

recommends eating berries at

least twice a week.

Beans

High in fiber and protein, and low

in calories and fat, beans also

5

nutrients. The MIND diet

recommends frequent servings of

green leafy vegetables (at least 2

servings a week).

Other Vegetables

The researchers recommend

eating a salad and at least one

other vegetable every day to

reduce the risk of Alzheimer's.

Fish

The MIND diet study found

eating fish at least once a

week helps protect brain

function.

help keep your mind sharp.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are a key

component of the MIND diet. It

recommends at least three

servings a day.

Poultry

Poultry is another part of a brain-

healthy eating plan, according

to the MIND diet. It recommends

two or more servings a week.

Olive Oil

Olive oil beat out other forms of

cooking oil and fats in the MIND

diet.

Wine

The MIND diet recommends a

glass of wine every day.

MIND diet, but the researchers say

you should limit consumption to no

more than four servings a week to

help protect brain health.

Butter and stick margarine

Butter and stick margarine should

be limited to less than a

tablespoon per day on the MIND

diet. Brain-healthy olive oil can

often be used instead.

Cheese

According to the MIND diet, eat

cheese no more than once a week (continued)

9

if you want to reduce your risk of

Alzheimer's.

Pastries and Sweets

The MIND diet recommends

limiting yourself to no more than

five of these treats per week.

Fried foods and fast food

Limit your indulgence in fried

food to no more than once a

week for optimal brain health.

healthy, that's probably also going to be brain

Guidelines, Not Dogma

According to researchers, these

new findings do not necessarily

mean that we have to follow the

MIND diet rigorously. Even if you

stray from the diet from time to

time, researchers say that it can still

have benefits. In fact, “modest

adherence” to the MIND diet

measurably reduced a person’s

chances of developing Alzheimer’s

disease.

However, the longer that you stick

with the diet, the greater the

benefits. According to lead author

Martha Clare Morris, “people who

eat this diet consistently over the

years get the best protection.”

Finally, to Keith Fargo, PhD, director

of scientific programs and

outreach at the Alzheimer's

11

Association, the findings of this

study hold a broader message:

“The take-away in general is

that if a person is eating in a

manner that is heart healthy,

that's probably also going to be

brain healthy.” n
