HOUSING SELECTION

WHERE WILL YOU LIVE NEXT YEAR? Whether you are an incoming freshman, transfer, returning sophomore, junior or senior, or graduate student, we encourage you to consider Temple’s on-campus housing accommodations. Using our online housing selection program, Student Web Self-Assign (SWSA), you can select roommates and request specific housing options.

HOUSING SELECTION PROCESS The housing selection process works on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you submit a deposit, the better your chance of getting the housing you prefer. Though demand is great and we can’t make guarantees, if you submit a deposit on time in accordance with our proposed schedule, you should receive on-campus accommodations. If you do not receive housing, your deposit will be refunded or applied to your university account. Twenty-four hours after the Bursar’s Office processes your housing deposit, you can log in to the MyHousing website via TUportal to book your room with Student Web Self-Assign (SWSA).

Note: Delays in processing deposits might occur on nonbusiness days and holidays and during system upgrades.

MEET YOUR MATCH —

Finding a roommate can be one of the most challenging parts of the housing process. At Temple, we understand that as you transition from high school to college, finding a compatible roommate is a crucial part of your decision-making process.

To make it easier to find a compatible roommate, we use RoomSync, a special roommate-matching program available as an application in Facebook. According to research, students who use RoomSync perform better academically. In part, that’s due to the choice you have in selecting the right roommate for a successful residential experience.

After submitting your housing deposit, you are automatically added to RoomSync, where you will be able to create a profile, search for other incoming Temple students and hopefully identify someone who could become your ideal roommate.

You will be able to begin your search in the early spring 2015 semester and continue as we open the housing selection process for new students.

Check out tutorials from RoomSync and University Housing and Residential Life to see the applications in action. Visit housing.temple.edu, select Your Housing and click Tutorials.

Learn more about the RoomSync app on the Temple University Housing and Residential Life Facebook page.

COMMIT TO LIVING ON CAMPUS Once you have committed to living on campus by submitting a housing deposit, you’ll receive an email inviting you to join our private RoomSync network. (Only those who submit housing deposits will be allowed to join.)

We also send out periodic reminders to encourage as many students as possible to join the matching network during its active period.

ENTER YOUR INFORMATION To create the best match, we ask key, detailed lifestyle questions, such as preferred bedtime, visitor frequency, and preferred academic majors and residence halls.

INTERACT WITH THE OWL COMMUNITY Once you’ve joined our RoomSync network, you can begin connecting with other students by posting on our online community wall, a place for students to meet potential roommates and also to create new friendships.

SEARCH FOR ROOMMATES You may search for roommates based on your lifestyle preferences and filter down to those who fit within your ideal range. Or you can view your most recommended roommates determined by lifestyle compatibility.

Additionally, if there is a specific interest you would like to have in common with your roommate, you can search for users with related keywords listed in their Facebook profile. You can also search for roommates by academic major and preferred residence hall.

REQUEST ROOMMATES ON FACEBOOK, CONFIRM IN STUDENT WEB SELF-ASSIGN (SWSA) You can request a roommate with RoomSync. Once the selected roommate confirms the request, you can access the completed roommate request in the RoomSync Administration site. Then include your new roommate in the Student Web Self-Assign (SWSA) booking system by adding Residential Management System (RMS) ID and TUid numbers.

–THE LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITY PROGRAM AT TEMPLE UNIVERSITY–

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUCCESS

— Temple’s Living Learning Communities (LLCs) enhance students’ academic, personal and professional growth by offering dedi cated residential communities. They combine a challenging curriculum with thematic experiences that take learning beyond the classroom and integrate it with daily campus life. And with so many opportunities for student-created programming—such as community service and artistic performances—that comple ment the classroom, LLC students’ responsibilities are, in many ways, their own learning tool. They’re also a great way to have a well-rounded college experience.

12

TEMPLE'S LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITIES PROVIDE • partnerships with faculty and staff.

• dialogues with peers about academic and social issues outside the classroom.

• increased satisfaction with the overall academic experience.

• enhanced connections with Temple and the city of Philadelphia.

• increased satisfaction with the transition to a large university.

We have become like a big family; we eat together, study with one another, and are always willing to help each other out. We all have our own friends and activities outside the LLC, as well, but when you come home, you’re welcomed with open arms."

LAKIN DAYNOROWICZ Civil Engineering, Class of 2016

I am really glad I chose to be a part of the Fox LLC. It helped me immerse myself in the student life here at Temple. Through the program I met really great friends, which made the transition to college life a lot smoother."

PEER MENTORS

HELPING OUR RESIDENTS LIVE, LEARN AND GROW Temple University’s residence halls support the academic achievement of our residents and strengthen the academic mission of the university. The Office of University Housing and Residential Life is committed to creating an environment that values and promotes an appreciation for diversity of lifestyles, cultures and people. Peer mentors are similar to resident assistants: They work to create a positive living environment by fostering a sense of community, providing help and assistance, and working with students and staff to ensure the best possible conditions in residences. They also work closely with staff and students over an extended period and can positively influence your growth.

PEER MENTORS ALSO are knowledgeable about their specific department and the university overall.

convey appropriate information to residents.

encourage academic achievement.

take an active role in residence hall programming.

Through community service, I’ve been able to work with kids that I cherish.”

KRISTINA LINDO Childhood Education, Class of 2018

Members of the Fox LLC are provided with numerous resources through a university seminar, your assigned peer mentor and your residence assistant. Additionally, you can participate in networking and social activities early on in your college career, developing your professional skills and meeting students and professionals in the business community.

THEATER, FILM AND MEDIA ARTS (TFMA) LOCATED IN JOHNSON RESIDENCE HALL The TFMA LLC affords theater and film students the benefit of many value-added resources such as convenient proximity to the Tomlinson Theater/Annenberg Hall instructional complex, enhanced academic advising, access to exclusive workspaces, as well as fostering closer ties to key faculty. GLOBAL LOCATED IN TEMPLE TOWERS AND MORGAN SOUTH RESIDENCE HALL The Global LLC brings together students from all over the world to learn from one another. The Global LLC addresses issues of isolation and cultural and language barriers and supports cultural experiences among community members. MAJOR EXPLORATION LOCATED IN JOHNSON RESIDENCE HALL The Major Exploration LLC helps undecided students transition from high school to college with others who are uncertain about which major to declare. Being undeclared can feel alienating when surrounded by peers who appear to have it all figured out; the Major Exploration LLC aims to help you understand how hard it can be to know what to major in as a freshman, and that it is OK to take a semester or two to make an informed decision.

MUSIC AND DANCE LOCATED IN JOHNSON RESIDENCE HALL Close to Presser Hall and Conwell Dance Theater, Music and Dance LLC students (who major in programs in the Boyer College of Music and Dance) attend special events and lectures at cultural venues on campus and throughout Philadelphia. This LLC allows you to collaborate in the classroom, practice and perform together, and be involved in community activities.

In this LLC, you will actively participate in academic workshops and educational, recreational and cultural programs and trips. In addition, tutoring support is offered in your residence hall during your first year to help you earn a high GPA.
