YORK RITE CRUSADER 1 Governor General’s Message Today, September 2 nd , marks one month into the 2014 2015 Biennium. Our 57 th General Assembly, held in Denver, Colorado, is now history. It was a wonderful conclusion to Governor General, Gerald A. Ford’s successful term of office and we thank him for his warmth of friendship and diligence to duty. With the loving support of his Lady Audrey, together, they have fulfilled M.P.E.D. Ford’s aspirations for service to our Sovereign College. Susan and I first attended at the 29 th General Assembly in 1986 in Calgary, Alberta. We so enjoyed the wonderful people we met there that we decided to make attendance at the General Assemblies of the York Rite Sovereign College of North America an annual event for ourselves. Since then our enjoyment has only grown. We have travelled the length and breadth of our countries and experienced many great cities and venues. We have been honored and privileged to get to know and become personal friends with wonderful masons and their ladies, meeting them year after year. R.E.D. Stanton Brown is a shining example of what I mean. I congratulate and invite the Distinguished Brethren of the Stanton Thayer Brown Class to come back again and again to enjoy the wonderful fraternal experience of our General Assemblies. “Thanks!” and “Job well done!” are certainly due to Colorado Grand Governor Roger Stene, General Chairman Grover Sardeson, and all their committee members for the way they conveniently provided for our every need and made our time in Denver so pleasant. Each beginning is exciting. Opportunities of leadership are a trust granted in hopes of dedicated and inspiring service. Each Biennium begins with the installation of the Governor General, the elected and appointed Sovereign College Officers, Grand Governors and Deputies, to provide leadership in 60 Jurisdictions together with the Regents and Associate Regents all striving in unity to achieve a common goal, the fulfilment of the Purposes of the York Rite Sovereign College. As Governor York Rite Crusader Fall, 2014 Volume XLVI -- Issue 1 General, I have great confidence in all and look forward to our labours together. Our York Rite Sovereign College is a modern Masonic body being conceived, organized and given form as recently as 1957. Our founders envisioned it as a meeting place and a forum for York Rite Leaders. Article II, “Purposes,” of our Constitution and By-laws sets out clearly our reason for existence and our rituals give it shape and form. To labor together as Companion Knights to strengthen and improve the York Rite of Freemasonry is a worthy calling. Every member has risen to eminence by merit, each a leader in his own right; we all have the opportunity to make a difference. Will you live up to this high purpose? I invite you to reflect for a moment on the Masonic Heroes you have met and admired along the path of your Masonic Journey. What was it about these Brethren that impressed you? Why were they able to have an impact on your life? How did they manage to make Freemasonry better for you? Can you strive to pay-forward what they have freely given to you? As Masons, we are bound by Duty, Honor and Gratitude to this trust. As Companion Knights, all the honors of Masonry are ours, but let us never lose sight of or ignore our one foundation, our Masonic Lodge, its tenets and principles. Whatever else you do, be sure to support your Masonic Lodge with your attendance and participation. It is our first duty in Masonry. The stronger our Craft Freemasonry, the stronger will be our beloved York Rite. In 1993, an additional purpose was added to the original six in Article II of the Constitution as paragraph (g) “To support Charitable and Benevolent endeavours of Freemasonry.” As Masons we are all encouraged to practice Charity. The York Rite Sovereign College of North America utilizes the “Charitable Fund U.S.A.” and the “Charitable Foundation of Canada” to manage its charitable works. These works rely solely on donations and bequests from our Companion Knights of York. Personally, I am privileged to serve on both the Trustees and the Board of Directors; by virtue of my office of Governor General, as Chairman of the U.S. Trust and also in the capacity of Secretary of the Canadian Foundation. I encourage every Companion Knight to make an annual donation. I challenge every member of the York Rite Colleges to become members of the Athelstan Nobility and join us in proudly wearing the distinctive jewel. Those of you, who already are, continue and renew your support. You will find information on how to participate in the Athelstan Nobility elsewhere in this issue of the Crusader. Continued on page 2

Today, September 2nd, marks one month into the 2014 – 2015 Biennium. Our 57th General Assembly, held in Denver, Colorado, is now history. It was a wonderful conclusion to Governor General, Gerald A. General, I have great confidence in all and look forward to our labours together.

The York Rite Sovereign College of North America would like to congratulate the 13 Companion Knights who were nominated to receive the Service Award at the 57th General Assembly in Denver, Colorado.

Governor General’s Message continued - I am looking forward with anticipation to travels and visitations as your Governor General. The Grand Governors have been requested to consider arranging “Regional Events.” They are great opportunities to meet and speak with many Companion Knights. Last June, when I attended the North Carolina Summer Assembly of York Rite Masons, there was a College Assembly, hosted by Smoky Mountain YRC No. 172 with more than 125 Companion Knights from all over the Southeast present; an excellent experience enjoyed by all present. This September, I will attend a Northeast Regional Assembly in Truro, Nova Scotia, hosted by Nova Scotia YRC No. 132 and a first annual Ontario Regional Assembly in Sault Ste. Marie hosted by International YRC No. 63.

It is customary to focus on what is not going well and to endeavour to make it right. Masons have been doing this for over 250 years. It is said that the only constant today is change. My Brethren, the fundamental tenets and principles of our Masonic art are as valid, worthwhile and needed today as ever. Live your life well. Focus on what is good and great. Enjoy Freemasonry! Feel the energy! Fraternally KGCY, Governor General

Illinois College No. 15 Degree Team confers Orders of Red Cross & Malta

to help Chicago-area Commanderies advance Templar Candidates

Continuing their mission to assist and support the York Rite bodies, Illinois College No. 15 maintains a highly proficient degree team that periodically confers the full-form Illustrious Order of the Red Cross and Order of Malta on candidates from Commanderies of Knights

Templar in the Greater Chicago area.

Like many Colleges, Illinois No. 15 has four appointed Heralds, one each for the Blue Lodge, Royal Arch Chapter, Cryptic Council and Commandery, identifying assistance needs and coordinating officer slates. Serving as the Chivalric Orders Herald is Companion Knight William E. Jegen, OPC, Right Eminent Past Grand Commander of Illinois.

The most recent conferral for 13 candidates was hosted by Mizpah Commandery No. 53 in the south suburb of Oak Lawn on May 31, 2014. Participants included Apollo No. 1 of Wheaton, Joliet No. 4, Sycamore No. 15 of DeKalb, Ivanhoe No. 33 of Kankakee, St. Bernard No. 35 and St. Elmo No. 64 of Chicago, Bethel No. 36 of Palatine, Evanston No. 58, and Trinity No. 80 of Downers Grove.

“Most Commanderies are no longer able to assemble a team to confer the Red Cross and Malta in full form, which also requires equipment and uniforms they may no longer have,” said Preeminent Governor Jack D. Chasteen, DSA, OPC. “Our College coordinates quality degree experiences that help rejuvenate the York Rite bodies while preparing candidates to receive the Order of the Temple.”

Among the larger and more active Colleges, Illinois No. 15 meets quarterly at venues throughout the Greater Chicago area, and maintains an updated website (www.chicagoyorkrite.org/college) and members-only Facebook page. Past Grand Governor of Illinois James W. Patton, OPC, currently serves in the elected line of the York Rite Sovereign College of North America.

He was also the District Deputy Grand Master for Kings County in 1985. Although Scotia Lodge has gone into darkness, Kentville Lodge No. 58 accepted him and to this day he serves as Historian of that Lodge. For his community involvement, he served as the Clerk for the village of Canning, NS. He was a faithful member of the Canning Volunteer Fire Department, and a true member of ‘St. Michaels and All Angels’ Anglican Church. He is also a supporting member of the local Royal Canadian Legion for 50 years. He also managed to own and operate ‘Canning Pharmacy’ during this time and repeatedly donated food and toys to needy families at Christmas time. And to think, if that wasn’t enough, he volunteers his

time as a ‘Tutor’ with the Kings County Literacy Program.

He is a truly deserving mason for the Gold Honour Award.
