By Roz PhillipsAutumn will soon be here and with autumn comes Halloween. Hallow-een is one of those holidays that can be challenging and preparation and thought should go into this holiday. Some concerns during this holiday are scary costumes, extra visits, can-dy concerns, Halloween decorations and Halloween sounds. If still at home and you feel the con-stant ringing of the doorbell is too much, just turn your lights off to dis-courage people from coming to your home. Or if you still want to partici-pate in the festivities, place a bowl of candy at the door with a note “Please take one”.Most facilities have extra guests, chil-dren from the community coming in costume and staff dressed for Hal-loween. Some residents will enjoy the events and others may shy away. Here are a few tips to consider for Halloween.

1. Be realistic about your expecta-tions for Halloween and individual stress.2. Discuss your plans with the in-dividual; just don’t go into a lot of detail.3. Be prepared to alter your plans. Go at a time when it is not as crowded.4.Avoidcandles,usenon-flamecan-dles or lights.5. Put pumpkins and mums up on tables to avoid tripping.6.If youfindtheindividualpickingat decorations, remove or take them down.7. Limit decorations. They may cause confusion and agitation.8. Try non-scary decorations like pumpkins and fall leaves vs. ghosts, goblins and witches.

9. Consider not using scary sounds but instead try Halloween songs.10.Avoidfloormatsthatmakescarysounds, decorations that are voice activated.11. Avoid using tapes and CDs with creaking doors, ghost screaming and other scary sounds.12. Limit sugar intake, offer fruit.13. If the individual is not over whelmed encourage them to hand out the candy but supervise them to avoid elopement or other risky be-haviors.14. Create new memories by baking a pumpkin pie, decorating sugar cookies, painting a pumpkin with chil-dren or others.

OCTOBER NEWS AND UPDATES

Janet Lytton, R.H.I.T., N.H.A.

Director ofReimbursement

Oh Boy, the month of October! The month that we prepare for all our ghosts, goblins and monsters. I would say that is statement is very appropriate as this is also the month that all the new Medicare rules and payments go into effect. As Manag-ers in each our Facilities, we need to be prepared with computer systems brought up-to-date as well as making sure our Staff has the most current information. The 2015 FY Medicare Part A reimbursement rates have been emailed to all our RHD fa-cilities. This shows a small increase over last year but not to the extent that our expenses have increased. Another monster that appears in October is the Medicare Part D drug

plan possible changes. It is strongly encouraged that each facility go through your residents and their plans to assure they are in the most appropriate plan. Your Medicaid residents can change throughout the year if needed as they are dual eligible. However, in seeing many of the pharmacy invoices/statements that Facilities receive, it is observed that perhaps some of the pharmacy costs, that the Facility pays for, for our Medicaid residents, may be due to the resident not being in the most appropriate plan. The Open Enroll-ment period is October 15 through December 7 of each year. Visit with your Residents’ Families to assure they are in the most appropriate

plan. Be prepared for the Medicare and Medicaid ghosts, goblins, and monsters and don’t let them scare you!
