2 | The Shadow | FALL 2014
Dear Fellow Members,
We’ve had another busy summer at Shadow
Wood and we’re looking forward to another great
year as our seasonal members return to Southwest
Florida. Families, friends, and travel have fi lled
all of our lives during this summer and we’re all
excited about everyone returning to Shadow
Wood for season. It will be so great to see you in
the coming months.
Our Board spent several days together in June at
our annual Board Retreat. Our discussions focused
on golf course improvements and maintenance,
membership off erings and privileges, our 5 year
capital plan and a 10 year look ahead. Since
becoming member owned, our Club has grown
stronger not only through membership sales, but
more importantly, through our members’ increased
activities and use of all of our Club facilities and
off erings.
We are committed to positioning Shadow
Wood at the top of the curve in the country club
market. We continue to study best practices of
high performing clubs and are devoted to steadfast
Board governance. We believe that our membership
off erings, opportunities and facilities are second to
none, and at the same time, we want our Club to
remain comfortable, fi lled with happy members,
always staying true to our commitment to value
and fi scal responsibility.
In January, we will celebrate our 5th Anniversary.
Over the past almost fi ve years, we have seen
signifi cant changes at Shadow Wood, and our
members are using our Club more than ever before.
Our events continue to sell out, our golf courses and
tennis courts are fi lled, and our food and beverage
operations continue to surge. Our card rooms are
also fi lled daily. It’s so wonderful to see so many of
you enjoying all of the amenities off ered.
Th ere are more special times ahead for all of us
this coming season. We hope you enjoy every day
you spend at Shadow Wood, a club where people
are proud to belong!
See you at the Club!

FALL 2014 | The Shadow | 3
From the General Manager
Brian BartolecGM/COO
Dear Shadow Wood Country Club Members,
It is hard to believe we are only a few short weeks away from the
majority of our members coming back to the Club. From what I have
seen, most if not all of you have had a busy summer with family, friends
and various trips around the world. We have had a solid summer here at
Shadow Wood and your team of employees has made signifi cant progress
in all areas of the Club. I am 100% confi dent your team has achieved
more this summer than any other club in the area. Th ank you for giving
us the resources to be successful!
On that note, please see my below update on some highlights of the
various happenings around the Club this summer:
Membership:Director of Membership, Danita Osborn continues to sign up new
members at a steady rate. A special thank you goes to Membership
Chairman, Mr. Ron Pierce, for his guidance as we have made adjustments
to our membership off erings. Th rough Sept./Oct. 2014 we have sold:
New Memberships Membership Total Dollar
Sold in 2014 Upgrades Sold in 2014 Amount
Golf 30 15 $1,661,500
Executive 2 1 $56,000
Sports 10 2 $91,000
Clubhouse 15 n/a $37,500
Total 57 18 $1,846,000
Our 2014 budget for membership sales and upgrades is $1,027,500.
As you can see, Danita has had a spectacular year!
In addition to sales, Danita has been tweaking our website this summer
to make adjustments to our reservation system that will result in a more
member friendly experience.
Th e member photo books have arrived and they are amazing. Th is
is a huge help to our staff and a nice touch for our members.
Our Chief Financial Offi cer, Soren Spiers, was able to create
a program that when our computers are not being used, the
member picture directory continually runs on the screens.
Our team can view the member pictures and names while in
their offi ce. Have no fear, if you missed out last season, the
photographers will be back this season. Th e member photo
book is located in the foyer of both clubhouses.
Finally, Danita was voted onto the Board of the Membership
Directors Association. All in all, a great summer for Danita and
membership sales!
Golf Operations:Director of Golf Operations, Andy Scrivner, and his team
have done an outstanding job this summer accomplishing
everything on their to do list. Head Golf Professionals, Bryan
McComb and Mark Moff at spent many hours on all three golf
courses verifying all markings. Th e Golf Committee will be
happy with their work.
Andy has worked closely with the Florida State Golf
Association to confi rm all course ratings. Th e Director of the
FSGA has off ered to meet with our Golf Committee this season
to review all ratings and further educate us on the methodology
and system the raters use.
All of the various club tournaments now have designated
tournament boards that are hanging in the club. A nice
improvement.
Both golf shops are fully stocked and all seasonal merchandise
has been ordered and is ready for delivery. Director of
Merchandise, Jeanette Fulton, has done a great job displaying the
various lines. We have a new and improved in-house inventory
system in place and our team has bought into the new system.
Th is in-house system should allow us to display merchandise in
a much more effi cient manner.
Th e Preserve Club Manager, Sandy Davison, has done an
outstanding job working with Andy and Food and Beverage
Director, Ron Cotorakas, on staff training and new programs
that will allow our team to deliver a more consistent daily
experience at the Preserve. Th e goal is to create an environment
where although the location is diff erent from the Preserve
campus to the Brooks campus, the level of service and attention
to detail mirror each other.
Andy has made progress researching and understanding the
Chelsea tee time reservation system as it relates to our larger
groups during season. He and Golf Chairman, Mr. Mike
LaForte, are coming up with a game plan for communicating
those fi ndings to the Golf Committee and our membership later
in the season.
By now many of you have met our new LPGA Teaching
Professional, Kim Grant. Kim comes to us with a wealth of
experience working with a wide variety of golfers from all
diff erent handicap levels. Kim will work closely with Andy
and our Director of Instruction, Dan Hansen, to grow our Golf
Academy. Be on the watch for new and exciting instructional
programs. Th ank you to Mr. Mike LaForte for helping us with
the vision of an LPGA Teaching Professional at Shadow Wood.
Finally, Outside Operations Supervisors, Pete Hartman and
Eric Johnson, and their teams have done a great job maintaining
our golf cars and servicing our members and their guests this
summer. It has been an extremely hot summer!
Golf Course Maintenance: I will keep this update short, as I could go on all day. Director
of Agronomy, Eric Ruha, and his entire team have worked
tirelessly this summer to renovate, maintain, and detail all
three golf courses and practice facilities. Eric’s weekly updates
have been really valuable in helping all of us understand the
complexity of maintaining 350 acres of turf in a tropical climate.
We constantly receive feedback from our members thanking
Eric for his updates. Th e South golf course is open for play
and is in excellent shape. A big thanks to Grounds Chairman,
Dr. Jay Sandza, and past Grounds Chairman, Mr. Pat Egan, for
their guidance and commitment to our team as we renovated the
South golf course. Th e renovation has been a home run!
Th e Preserve golf course opened in mid-August and helped
with our summer demand while the North and South golf
courses were closed. On a side note, our team, coupled with
Glaze Construction, has worked on several small projects during
the down time this summer on the Preserve golf course. All of
these projects were directed at helping the Preserve golf course to
be more member friendly.
Th e North Course has recently reopened. Eric’s team was able
to complete all of the necessary agronomical practices needed
this summer. We are expecting fantastic conditions for the
upcoming season on all three golf courses.
Tennis:We were able to replace fences and level courts on two of our
courts this summer. We are in year three of a four year plan. By
Continued on Page 4
4 | The Shadow | FALL 2014
Continued from Page 3the end of next summer, all nine of our courts will have
been professionally leveled and all will have new fences.
We added awnings to our courts as well this summer.
Tennis Chairman, Mr. Farris Kalil, and Director of Tennis,
David Dooley, spent quite a bit of time discussing the
new incoming members with the Tennis Committee this
summer and they have some exciting off erings set for 2015.
Th ank you Mr. Kalil.
Food and Beverage:After studying the 2014 Member Survey as it related to Food
and Beverage and digesting all of the recommendations from
the House Committee this past season, our management
team, coupled with House Chairman, Pat Egan, developed
a new plan for the Preserve Food and Beverage off erings in
2015. Th e feedback we received indicated our members
would like a casual, price sensitive option at the Preserve
with a concentration on A la Carte dining. With that in
mind, keep an eye out for upcoming information as it
relates to 2015 and the Preserve food and beverage package.
ADM/HR/Accounting/Clubhouse:Soren Spiers and Club Administrative Assistant, Karon
Bartley, have put together a fantastic employee recognition,
employee wellness, and employee on-boarding/orientation
plan this summer. Th ey hosted wellness classes for our
staff in subjects like nutrition, weight loss, and smoking
cessation. Th ey also developed an incentive program for
participating in these. With these new programs in place,
I would put Shadow Wood up against anybody in terms
of being a great place to work where employees feel valued
and cared for!
Soren and Karon conducted training for both our
management team as well as our staff in the areas of looking
out for potential fraud, sexual, and other harassments.
Attendance was very high, and reviews from the staff
showed that this form of training was very well received.
No issues have been reported, but we now have everybody
monitoring.
We have replaced all our on property computers to enhance
member services by preventing downtime of club operating
software systems. In addition, we also needed to comply
with the lack of future support of the outdated Microsoft
XP version. All old XP machines have been eliminated.
A special thanks to Club Treasurer, Mr. Ray Kostelc, and
Club Secretary, Mr. Bill Pritts, for meeting with all of our
team members whenever needed all summer long. Th e
entire team is grateful for their willingness to lend a helping
hand.
With the help of Club Vice-President, Mr. Bob Seidell,
we have developed a thorough checklist for the on course
restrooms. As we speak, our team is organizing, cleaning,
painting, and reviewing the restrooms daily. We are also
in the approval stages of adding the employee parking
crosswalk by the maintenance area, awaiting fi nal approval
from the Shadow Wood Home Owner’s Association.
By the end of the summer we have converted the entire
clubhouse and parking lot at the Brooks to LED lighting
without any signifi cant capital expense and improving
the carbon footprint of the club thereby becoming more
environmentally friendly. In addition, the reduced annual
light bulb and electricity costs will exceed $20,000 per year
due to this change over. Th ank you Mr. Bob Seidell for
working with me not only on the buildings side of things,
but on the long range plan for the main clubhouse and the
Preserve clubhouse.
I have spent most of the summer reviewing all areas of the
club with all of our Directors. Inspecting what is expected.
Soren and I have spent countless hours working closely
with Mr. Ray Kostelc, Mr. Bill Pritts and Club President,
Mrs. Nancy Nemec updating the Club’s Strategic Plan and
reviewing the Club’s capital needs for the coming years.
During the Annual Town Hall meeting in November we
will have more details for the membership in those areas.
Mrs. Nancy Nemec and I have continued our weekly
calls to discuss the Club. It is funny how our weekly calls
seem to turn into daily calls. A huge thank you goes out to
Mrs. Nancy Nemec for her leadership and support.
Th ank you for reading my update, have a great day and
we are all looking forward to a tremendous 2015 season of
fun!
Sincerely,
Brian BartolecGM/COO Shadow Wood CC

Dear Shadow Wood Country Club Members,
It has been a busy summer for the Golf Staff . We are excited about the
projects we were able to complete in preparation for the upcoming golf
season. It is now time to refocus on all of the important elements that
create the golf experience for our members and their guests. Th is starts
with the senior staff and continues through our training and coaching of
seasonal staff .
Th e Golf Committee and its subcommittees approved an exciting cal-
endar of golf events for the upcoming season. We feel strongly that the
schedule is sensitive to all Club activities while still off ering a full menu of competitive, social,
and guest golf events. Please stay tuned to your email along with information boards around
the Club to learn more details about upcoming golf events. It is important to sign up early, as
we do expect full fi elds for most of our events!
Th e Golf Academy will be off ering fresh, new instructional programs throughout the up-
coming season. Every golfer plays the game diff erently, and every student learns the game
diff erently. Your entire Golf Academy Staff is dedicated to off ering many diff erent learning
environments. Whether that is group instruction, golf schools, golf & fi tness combination
events, or individual private lessons, the staff is excited to utilize several new and exciting
programs to increase our members’ enjoyment of the game! As I mentioned once before, the
game is dynamic and your Academy Staff strive to be equally dynamic in our instructional
off erings. Please stay tuned to Club communications for more information about upcoming
instructional programs.
I look forward to working with my students on the specifi c challenges that are presented
on our three courses. I enjoy teaching individual, private lessons along with group sessions. It
is important to have a “game plan” on your way to the fi rst tee, and understanding your game
allows for the best plan! I invite our members to contact me directly to schedule a golf lesson.
Th e Golf Shops experienced some needed updates over the summer. Th ese updates add to
our excitement about the plan for merchandise off erings this season; and we feel proudly about
our ability to off er the fi nest products available to our members. Additionally, Shadow Wood
CC will host numerous Demo-Day events in order to expose members to the newest and fi nest
golf clubs on the market. Th e Professional Staff is eager to schedule personal fi tting sessions
during these Demo-Day events with members. Please remember, your golf staff is here for you,
and we are happy to assist in obtaining a particular product or size whenever possible.
In closing, on behalf of the entire golf staff , welcome back to Shadow Wood Country Club!
We are driven to meet our goal of fostering the fi nest golf experience possible, while providing
you unsurpassed service this season. Our focus is on making this the best golf season yet at
Shadow Wood Country Club!
Respectfully yours,

Dear Shadow Wood Country Club Members,
To say this year was busy on the courses would be an understatement. Besides completing all the
necessary agronomic practices to get the course ready for seasonal play, the front nine of the South
Course received a face lift.
Our team was very excited to complete the re-grassing of tees, fairways, approaches and collars. Th e
old 419 Bermuda grass turf surfaces were replaced with more uniform Celebration Bermuda. Th e
results are outstanding! Th e two acre main practice tee at the Brooks campus was also renovated to
Celebration for great turf during winter play.
Forward tees were added on the front nine of the South Course. Stand alone tee boxes at yardages
recommended by Architect, Bob Cupp, were built for those wanting to play the course from a diff erent
view and distance. Feedback to date has been very positive.
Th e sixth green complex on the South Course was completely rebuilt to USGA specifi cations with
a plan from Mr. Cupp. Th e new green provides a diff erent look than the old one and still provides a
challenge. Th ere is an upper tier to the back left on the putting surface and long shots over the green
will take fi nesse to come back on.
We are looking forward to future projects on all courses to make them more enjoyable for you! Eric W. Ruha Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Agronomy

FROM THE CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
SOREN SPIERS
With an increasing focus on improving our environment, Shadow Wood
Country Club is embarking on the transition from incandescent light bulbs to
LED (Light Emitting Diodes) bulbs. Each section of both clubhouses and our
parking lots will be transitioning over to LED lighting in the next few months
with the Brooks clubhouse almost completed. In looking at this transition it is
important to look at what would make us change over.
LED light bulbs last longer.
Without a fi lament to break or burn out, LED
light bulbs can last for over 100,000 hours without
showing their age. With over eleven years at full
brightness, this lifespan is twice that of typical
fl uorescent bulbs and twenty times longer than
incandescent light bulbs.
LED light bulbs are energy effi cient.
An incandescent light bulb loses 80 percent of its energy to heat, leaving only the last 20 percent
for light. LED light bulbs turn this around, giving up a scant 20 percent of their energy to heat
loss. Not only that, but they operate at 10 to 20 percent of the power required for incandescent
bulbs of similar brightness.
LED light bulbs are incredibly safe.
With so little energy lost to heat and so little energy used overall, LED light bulbs run cool,
which means no burnt fi ngers or fi re hazards. Th ey are extremely durable thanks to their solid-
state construction, so there’s no broken glass to deal with either.
LED light bulbs promise a brighter future.
LED light bulbs don’t contain mercury, like compact fl uorescent bulbs do. Combining that with
the fact that they outlast their energy effi cient cousins, makes the choice to go LED clear as day.
Substantial savings are possible by simply updating some features to improve the Club’s energy
effi ciency. At Shadow Wood we do our best to conserve energy resources in order to enjoy
cleaner air and a healthier environment. Your Shadow Wood team will continue to look for
ways to improve the SWCC facilities while focusing on using green power to reduce further our
consumption of energy from fossil fuels and to also lower our carbon footprint.

Soren Spiers, CHAEChief Financial Offi cer

Hello Shadow Wood Country
Club members! Over the summer
I have worked closely with the
SWCC culinary team on creating
many brand new and exclusive menus with more selection,
focusing on the wellness of the members at the Club. We
have designed new menu items to include more gluten
free, vegetarian, and heart healthy selections. Please do not
hesitate to contact me with any dietary requests as we are
able to modify and prepare most any item around your
needs. I trust that you will benefi t from these new dining
selections off ered to you by the SWCC culinary team.
Our team worked in tandem this summer with Tannis

Dear Shadow Wood Country Club Members,
As your Food and Beverage Director I would like to express to
you that your continued support this year has boosted SWCC
reservations at a record high! Shadow Wood members are proud
of this Club and it shows! Your support is very much appreciated.
We encourage reservations for evening dining, Sunday Brunch
and Special Events which are hosted at the Club. Remember
to check your email for the Dining and Social Calendar
communication each week which features the latest fl avorsome
menus from Executive Chef, Richard Crisanti, and the SWCC
culinary team.
Th is summer your Food & Beverage team met to plan the
upcoming schedule of events to include exciting new menus
and innovative, upbeat entertainment in hopes to impress the
membership. One of the best things about this time of year
is that many of our team members return to the Club for the
season! You will notice many familiar faces who are excited
about their return and many new faces who are fantastic team
additions. We are all looking forward to a great season of food
and entertainment!
As always, if you have any questions or need assistance in any
way, my door is open. Wishing you safe travels as you return
from your residences up north to your Shadow Wood homes.
