“Lift up Wholeness and Well-being for the members of the church to the same level of importance as Peace and Justice or Generosity” was the action taken by the 2013 World Conference delegates. HMA was named as one of the primary organizations to bring an increased focus of health to the life of the church. HMA members are integral in the First Presidency-appointed “Health and Wholeness Team”.

“Health is a state of com-plete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” as defined by the World Health Organization. This holistic approach to health is part of our basic belief in the worth of persons as creations of God. Wholeness of body, mind, and spirit expands the concept to “whole person health”. This message of health and wholeness is for each individual, each family, and each congre-gation. HMA and the Health & Wholeness Team focus is on promoting health

and wholeness for all persons through education, re-sources, activities, and worship. “Whole person health” is about serving God with all our “heart, might, mind, and strength” and as we say in HMA, its “promoting health with a heart.”

Health and Wholeness Team Meets - HMA Vice President is Chair

Kathy Robinson is Team chair for 20 members and consult-ants in 4 USA time zones and 3 Australian time zones. Three meetings by conference call and several meetings with church depts. have already taken place.

What Does “Healthy” Look Like?

“Life balance” could describe individual whole-ness in terms of positive self-talk, stress manage-ment, physical exercise, good diet choices, weight management, uplifting relationships, fellowship with and caring for others, and nurturing the spirit thru prayer, study, and meditation. When any aspect of life is out of balance, other areas become neglected, often due to “lack of time”.

Nurturing families treat each member with respect and dignity from newborn to senior, eat together to share the day’s activities, value each person’s opinion and ideas, play together and enjoy each other’s company.

Healthy congregations might be described as caring, loving people worshipping together, shar-ing meals together with foods created by God (not industrial labs) that nourish the body while feeding the spirit with fellowship, uplifting one another in prayer and communications during the week so that Sunday morning is a celebration together, and a “sanctuary” where each person is valued, encouraged, and supported. Vibrant, healthy congregations provide relevant ministry that makes each individual desire to participate in the life of the church.

Team members, Jeanne Earnest and Dan Waite, participate from the Temple while others call in.

Recent health crises around the world bring a

renewed focus on the need for indigenous

healthcare providers. Educating these workers has

been an important goal of HMA and its predecessor

organizations, MDA and PNA.

HMA is creating an Endowment Scholarship Fund

for international healthcare education post high

school. These funds will be available for a variety of

health professions, not just nursing. With donations

and bequests, HMA goal is $200,000 of endowed

funds. HMA will support indigenous students

studying in their native country. It is also important

to HMA that the educated individuals be

committed to serving in areas of greatest need.

Contributions to this endowment fund have begun.

Please consider this opportunity as part of your

planned giving legacy and/or a memorial gift

honoring a health professional passionate about

educating the next generation.

HMA currently helps young people obtain an

auxiliary nursing certificate while they complete

high school through their partnership with Friends

of Education, Honduras (formerly called the Futures

Program).

Auxiliary nurse education enables employment in

rural village government clinics. The high school

diploma allows them to enroll in university classes

for professional nursing or attend a nursing

program equivalent to LPN school in the USA. At

this time, HMA members and donors support six

auxiliary nursing students at this basic level of

health education attending high school in Santa

Barbara, Honduras.

[The $50,000 endowed scholarship fund created by the Professional Nurses Association still assists professional nursing students after they have completed half of their university classes. Though HMA does not manage these funds, HMA can recommend applicants.]
