Alumni chapter volunteers are instrumental in helping CAA bring alumni closer together. They have the ability to reach alumni in geographic regions around the nation and keep them connected to Berkeley and fellow alumni. CAA recently spoke with Yolanda Hong ’02, president of Cal Alumni Club of Puget Sound (CAPS), about her volunteer involvement with CAA.

“My experiences at Cal helped me come out of my shell. Getting involved with alumni clubs furthered my personal and professional growth by providing me opportunities to hone my leadership and public speaking skills,” shared Yolanda, who joined the Orange County Cal Alumni Club in 2003. As a member of her local Alumni Chapter, Hong attended football viewing parties and participated in volunteer projects at food banks.

In 2007, Yolanda moved to Seattle and was looking for ways to make new friends—so she joined the Cal Alumni Club of Puget Sound. “It is so rewarding to make connections with Cal alumni and hear their stories.” Within a year Yolanda began volunteering to help grow the club.

Today, CAPS is one of the largest Alumni Chapters. Approximately 900 alumni are associated with the chapter and events have up to 100 attendees. Alumni have the opportunity to attend football tailgates, basketball viewing parties, networking events, and the monthly dinner club. CAPS also provides alumni the chance to participate in CAA’s YES Berkeley! Student Recruitment program. Thanks to Yolanda the chapter has added fundraising to the list of alumni activities. Recently, the

chapter held its inaugural silent auction in conjunction with CAPS’s 30th anniversary. The money raised will help support CAA Alumni Scholarships.

“The Alumni Chapters Program empowers and invigorates us to stay connected to our alma mater. Our role is to get alumni excited," says Yolanda of her volunteer experience. “We all benefit from CAA’s support.”

The Alumni Chapters Program offers alumni the opportunity to stay involved with and connect to the University, students, and fellow alumni. For more information about an Alumni Chapter in your area, please visit alumni.berkeley.edu/chapters.

Giving back comes easily and naturally for Robert C. Aronoff ’73. Since 1978, Robert’s community service has been focused on youth and education. “I believe in mentoring young people and teaching them the value of an education. However when they turn 18, they often don’t have the money to go to college,” shared Robert. In 1990, as a board member of the Jewish Big Brothers, Big Sisters Association of Los Angeles, he established a scholarship program which on average awards 40 scholarships per year. Many of these scholarship recipients are Cal students.

This experience, coupled with an affinity for his alma mater, propelled Robert to support CAA Alumni Scholarships. In 2008, Robert became interested in The Achievement Award Program (TAAP). Impressed by the motivation and accomplishments of TAAP scholars, he endowed the Robert C. Aronoff Achievement Award. “TAAP is a great program. It provides more than cash for students in need, it has a mentoring component.”

As part of the TAAP family, Robert gets to know the students who benefit from his endowment. He has fond memories of getting to know Jeanette Vasquez ’11. Most recently, he was inspired by Lucas Nguyen ’13 who invented the Chemplate. Robert mentored and guided Lucas during the manufacturing and distribution process. “Lucas had a good idea and it was a privilege to go along for the ride. Helping students like Lucas is important to me.”

Robert continues to support CAA Alumni Scholarships. This past August he established the Robert C. Aronoff Leadership Award to express his appreciation for the University of California, Berkeley, and its impact on his life, the lives of others, and the country. “I hope to duplicate the success of the Jewish Big Brothers, Big Sisters Scholarship and the Robert C. Aronoff Achievement Award.”

In addition to establishing endowments, Robert currently volunteers as a reader and interviewer for TAAP and The Leadership Award. “Being involved with the selection process makes me more appreciative of the quality of students who need and earn these awards. It leaves no doubt that I am getting my money’s worth. It also keeps me in touch with young people.”

Robert’s passion and dedication as both a volunteer and a donor are what make CAA Alumni Scholarships possible and successful. “Supporting CAA scholarships is a chance for me to help the next generation. Education is important, not just for personal success but for our country. I am just doing my part.”

The Equity Scholarship Celebrates its 5th Anniversary

In 2008 CAA created The Equity Scholarship, a four-year, merit-based scholarship that funds five new underrepresented minority students each year with a $5,000 annual stipend.

“With Prop. 209 [eliminating Affirmative Action] being the law of the land, the problem was that there were extremely well qualified minority students who were choosing not to come here because they felt they weren’t welcome here, and nothing could be further from the truth,” says Darek DeFreece ’93, who was CAA president when the scholarship was started. “By offering them financial assistance to come here, we were directly attacking that concept.”

The first cohort of Equity Scholars graduated last spring, and we caught up with three of them to find out what they’ve been up to since then.

“I’m currently working as the intake advisor for the Biosciences Division at Cal, as well as studying for my MCAT,” says Claudia Rocha ’13. “I can’t wait to become a doctor! I really want to work in urban, low-income areas where I can be the most useful, not only because of my background but

Since 1943, CAA has recognized alumni of the University of California, Berkeley, who have made distinguished contributions to the welfare of humanity and thereby brought special credit to the University. CAA is honored to announce the selections for the 2014 Alumni Awards. We are proud to recognize and celebrate the achievements of these outstanding alumni who contribute to Cal, the state of California, and our global community.

also because I am extremely passionate about eliminating health care disparities.”

Mitra Vijeh ’13 is also headed to med school. In the meantime, she’s working as an EMT on an ambulance in Alameda County, a good preparation for her chosen specialty. “I really like working in an emergency room, and the adrenaline rush is pretty cool.”

Yet a third scholar is headed into medicine—but on the administrative side. “I want to run my own hospital,” explains Nayely Chavez ’13. A Public Health major with a minor in Public Policy, she’s currently working for Triage Consulting Group, which specializes in helping hospitals recover money due to them from recalcitrant insurance companies.

And all three say their Equity Scholarships made all the difference.

“My experience at Cal was as awesome as it possibly could be, and The Equity Scholarship had a lot to do with it,” says Vijeh. “It allowed me to be a part of Cal instead of just go to Cal.”

“Had I not received The Equity Scholarship, I would have had a very different college experience because I would have had the additional stress of worrying about money,” says Chavez.

“I can’t imagine what it would have been like to have to go to another school because of my financial situation,” says Rocha. “Because of The Equity Scholarship, I was able to attend the university I knew I was meant to attend.”

This is music to the ears of DeFreece, who credits former board members Holly Lake ’93 and Josh Fryday ’03, J.D. ’09, for originating The Equity Scholarship. “It proves to me that it was the right thing to do,” DeFreece says. “I hope it grows and more students get the opportunity to be Equity Scholars.”
