A PUBLICATION OF THE EL JARDIN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
BAYFEST 2013 WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
I heard that Volunteering is at the heart of a strong
community.
Bayfest 2013 is just around the corner (Oct 12th) and we
have already started preparing for the big day. For it to be a
big success we are in need of volunteers.
Please consider volunteering a couple of hours or more to
help with our largest community event. We will need
volunteers for the kid’s games (Cake Walk, Ring Toss,
Fishing, Ticket Sales Table, Raffle, and more.
If you would like to volunteer please contact Melissa Conkling
at 281-701-9743 or by email at
Thank you in advance!

EASTER EGG HUNT 2013
Submitted by: Tanya Schmidt
Howdy neighbors, better late than never…but I wanted to tell everyone a
BIG THANK YOU for helping to make this year’s Easter Egg Hunt at the
Weiss House “egg”cellent! So many neighbors dropped off eggs at my
house! And another BIG THANK YOU to the EJCA Board who donated
so many eggs and a bunny suit! The kids got a real treat when the
Easter Bunny himself showed up!
We had “egg stuffing parties” at my house for many nights before the
hunt. When we spread the eggs the ENTIRE park was covered in Easter
eggs!! It was quite the sight!
So again, thank you all for your help and support. We could not have
pulled it off without your help. I can’t wait for next year’s Easter Egg
Hunt…but I might ask for a little more help stuffing all those eggs!!
CONSTRUCTION ON PORT ROAD
Submitted: Mary Anderson
There are currently two construction projects underway along Port Road. One is the Northbound flyover from Port Road to Northbound Highway 146. Estimated completion is 4th Quarter 2013. And the project just getting started in the vicinity of the Bayport Terminal Exit Gate is to create another lane for westbound traffic with plans that this will allow room for through traffic in the left-most (and middle) lanes, and allowing the trucks the room they need to pull out of the terminal onto Port Road.
SIGNS HAVE ARRIVED!
Signs will be posted around the Bay front park indicating that the Bay front park (El Jardin side) is for use by “paid” members of the El Jardin Community Association. If you have not paid your dues yet ($35 a year, which covers June of 2013 through May of 2014), now is the perfect opportunity. See the attached form (page 5)
Fall General
Meeting
The El Jardin
Community Association
has two General
Meetings a year. The
second meeting will be
the second Sunday in
November. That will be
November 10, 2013.
The meeting will start at
4:00 PM. The main
focus is the overview of
the recent Bayfest. We
will not serve dinner but
we will have soft drinks
and water. Please mark
your calendar and come
visit with your
neighbors.
COMMUNICATIONS DURING AN EMERGENCY
Talks are underway with the Port of Houston and the neighboring chemical plant communities to assure that the Port of Houston has a plan and method in place to communicate with the truck drivers, cruise guests, and the neighboring communities in the event of an incident. This includes POHA developing a plan should there be a Shelter in Place called due to an incident at one of the neighboring chemical plants.
A Little of This and That
Submitted by: Sue Hayes
I have been told this and as of yet I have not tried it. Home Depot
sells orange cleaning concentrate stuff and if you mix it as directed
pour it on ant mounds and they will die. The orange cleaning stuff is
really good for cleaning also. Another tip I have been told is to mix
one gallon of vinegar and a tablespoon of dish soap and spray on
weeds and they will die. I have not tried this either but I am going to
try both.
I told you about the Mayors Hot Line (713-475-5555) is the number to
call if you have a problem with the city. One of our neighbors found
two large pot holes on Youpon and call the hot line and told them
about the big deep pot holes and they were out the next day to fix
them. This shows that the hot line works.
Mike Jackson from the police department came and talked to us at the
June General Meeting. One of the things he stressed was NOT to leave
stuff in your car that people walking by can see. Car break-ins increase
greatly in the summer. Keep this in mind when you leave your car.
Another thing he told us is that El Jardin is one of the safest places to
live in Pasadena. We do have police call outs but they are lower than
any other area of Pasadena and they usually are not of a severe
nature. That is good news. A number you may want to have by your
phone is the non-emergency number for the police department 713-
477-1221. If you call the number just mentioned you can request
vacation patrols for your home while you are gone.
Neighbors Night Out
Neighbors Night Out will
be October 2, 2013. We
will be serving hot dogs
with all the trimmings.
We will meet at Weis
House about 5:30 and
hopefully start serving
shortly afterward. We will
serve until the hot dogs
are gone, since we buy
over 100 dogs we will be
serving for awhile. We will
put signs out to remind
you the week before.
Martyn Farm Harvest Festival
at Armand Bayou Nature Center
This great event is going to be November 9-10, from 10:00 AM to
4:00PM at the Armand Bayou Nature Center. You can experience Gulf
Coast life during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The kids can make
candles, wash clothes on a scrub board, make a yarn doll, stuff a scare
crow and many other activates. They will have local artisans demonstrating
forgotten crafts, live music and other entertainment. The cost is $10.00 for
adults and $5.00 for children 4-12 and seniors. This cost covers all
activates. At the “Martyn’s Mercantile” you will be able to purchase
homemade jams, jellies, pickles, local honey, homemade pies, and historic
clothing and dolls. Also food and drink will be available to purchase. The
Martyn Farm Harvest Festival helps to provide funds for the Hands on
History educational program at the nature center.
CRUISING…….. WITH PRINCESS
Starting November 2013, Princess will be sailing out of Houston's Bayport Cruise Terminal. Caribbean Princess will sail 27 departures to the Caribbean isles this coming Winter and Spring calling on ports at Island of Cozumel, Island of Roatan, and Belize City
Port of Houston Practice Drill
On Saturday, August 24, 2013 starting at 8:00 AM the Port of
Houston plans to conduct an Active Shooter Exercise at the
Bayport Cruise Terminal. There will be about 100 participants.
There may appear to be mass causalities but they will just acting.
A lot of emergency vehicles and other equipment will be at the
cruise terminal so don’t be alarmed if you see this activity. If you
monitor the emergence channels you probably will hear chatter
about the drill.

The El Jardin Community Association, a non-profit
organization, needs your monetary support!
Where does this money go?
It keeps the common areas (like the parks) maintained.
It pays for gasoline and tractor maintenance for lawn mowing.
It pays for the maintenance costs for the playground equipment.
It keeps the electricity running at the Weis House.
It gave us our awesome new entrance sign.
It pays for mosquito spraying twice per month….You don’t want West Nile, do you?
Historically, only about 12% of households pay these low annual dues. Just think of what we could
do it everyone donated! Please do your part to help make our community the best it can be!
