Dear Parents, do

you realize you

are pioneers? Thirty

years ago when I

founded Chrysalis,

I didn’t realize I

was a pioneer. I

created a school for

my own children

with the core belief that children should have the freedom

to make choices about their learning. I wanted them to

have time for hobbies and to enjoy not just their school

experiences, but their lives. After 30 years of research and

observations of our many Chrysalis students, I have deepened

my understanding of how children learn; a traditional

classroom just isn’t the optimum fit for many children.

When I began Chrysalis in 1983,

I had several friends who

brought their children to my home

for school. Parents told their friends

about it and before I knew it, my home

became too small. I hired my first

employees and bought memberships

for all of the students at the Gold Creek

Fitness Center. We met there, started

the high school, and had lessons that

combined exercise with learning!

We even used the resident ducks for writing creative stories.

We kept growing and leased our first space in Bothell.

In 1990, as the idea of “Chrysalis” spread, we found

ourselves moving - again - to our current location in Woodinville.

My oldest children graduated shortly after that and as a

family, we made the decision to keep Chrysalis open even as

our children moved on to college and eventually established

successful careers of their own. Our growth continued and we

added a separate elementary and junior high campus. I find

tremendous joy in my grandchildren now attending Chrysalis.

Since opening, we have had over 1500 graduates. Careers

of former graduates include athletes, musicians, lawyers,

mechanics, and teachers. We are proud of all of them. Chrysalis

families believe in what we do - so much so that some of our

current students have parents who graduated from Chrysalis!

Being a parent with a child enrolled at Chrysalis means

you believe in those founding principles.  What I believed

about learning 30 years ago remains

true today: Chrysalis is a place that

appreciates and encourages the

talents of all of our children. We are

all pioneers because we are willing to

challenge how society traditionally

educates our children. Fortunately,

the field of neuroscience is growing

daily and research supports the

ideas and observations we have

always incorporated at Chrysalis.

Life is about the journey. From our earliest beginnings

to where we are today, it is the support of all the

pioneers - parents, students and staff - that has made

Chrysalis the successful, educational experience it is.

Margaret, their teacher, critiques their designs, teaches them a new style, and, for drawing homework has them apply the concept.

It’s Friday, and Maggie (8) is going to high school. Monday through Thursday she’s in a multi-age classroom with students from 6 to 10 years old. Friday’s are special: she takes fashion design at the Upper Campus, along with Addison and Kiah, her BFFs.

They skip out of Margaret’s office and begin work right away in the activity center, where high school students talk about their field trip to Discovery Park that morning, for Photography class. Some stop by to admire the girls’ designs, and don’t seem to pay any attention to their age.

CURRICULUM dynamic

rails“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”

− Ralph Waldo Emerson

At Chrysalis, the hobbies and interests of our students are integrated into their curriculum, ENCOURAGING their PASSIONS, and allowing them to BE WHO THEY ARE.

COLLEGEMODELING7 PARTNERING - While interacting one-on-one with

teachers, students are modeled effective relationship skills. By fostering collaboration, Chrysalis instructors build trust and promote engaged learning, which is crucial for college-bound seniors.

PRACTICING - Chrysalis’ college-like environment encourages learners to be self-directed. Over time, students effectively manage their own academic needs and foster positive habits which translate into independence and scholastic success.

PREPARING - Students have a voice and choice in their schedule options at Chrysalis. Like in college, teacher selection and time-of-day preferences are just two of the considerations where they can be actively involved.

PRIORITIZING - Typical college courses do not meet every day; neither do ours. Between class meetings, students learn the skill of time assessment and work allocation, so that they meet academic requirements and complete assignments.

PROCESSING - Developing critical thinking skills in high school is essential for future college success. Free time allotted to process learned information, absorb ideas, formulate opinions and recognize relationships between concepts promotes self-reflection and problem-solving proficiency.

PERCEIVING - As our students begin to identify and evaluate different learning and teaching styles, they become more comfortable determining which course loads and teachers will offer the best fit for personal achievement.

PROBING - By pursuing subjects in an in-depth manner, Chrysalis students become ‘experts’ in their topics. With piqued interest and sustained success, teachers can create rigorous curriculumfor students who are engaged, complex thinkers. Theseproblem-solving skills prepare them for the college environment.
