This past August, Mission of Mercy was chosen to lead the medical providers portion of the inaugural Baltimore Project Homeless Connect initiative to address the many needs of the city’s homeless community. The project, which served more than 1,000 participants at M&T Stadium in downtown Baltimore, pulled resources from multiple charities, allowing each to collaborate in this single effort, taking a holistic approach by providing support for every aspect of the attendees’ lives. M.O.M.’s mobile clinic served as the primary medical component, treating the health needs of those seeking medical care.

In my first four months, I have had the privilege of meeting patients and their families as well as donors from all around the region. One thing became abundantly clear—Mission of Mercy is truly beloved. We have a very special mission, to restore dignity, and that mission is delivered by providing really good medicine and by keeping a focus on prayer and being an instrument of God’s Love.

Our reputation for mobility and compassionate care had the United Way of Central Maryland recommend us for inclusion in the Baltimore Project Homeless Connect on August 2, 2012. The coordinator, a Johns Hopkins’ doctoral candidate, requested that we take the lead medical role working side-by-side with such fine institutions as Johns Hopkins, Mercy Hospital, University of Maryland’s nursing school and the local clinic, Healthcare for the Homeless. What an extraordinary experience! But that’s just another day at the “office” for the volunteers and staff of Mission of Mercy. In every community we serve, we rely on these kinds of outstanding partnerships to ensure that we deliver our services in the most efficient and cost-effective manner—benefitting not only the patients but also the community at large.

Coincidentally, just prior to the event, I was contacted by one of our Gettysburg patients seeking to “move” her file to the Reisterstown site. For her, Mission of Mercy is her “medical home” and she appreciated our quick response. She shared she was not accustomed to being treated with this kind of respect—being someone who was newly homeless—she often feels dismissed. I mentioned the homeless event and she promised to stop by and say “hello.” Through our series of interactions, her dignity was restored, feeling she was someone who now was worthy of being treated respectfully. At the event she stopped by our triage area and introduced herself. She was smiling and joyful, one more testimony to our mission being fulfilled and dignity being restored.

I look forward to continuing to magnify our heartfelt impact through our loyal and trusted community leaders and partners, volunteers, and funders. Thank you for your commitment to the patients and families we serve. We certainly could not do what we do without you and, as my partner on this journey, I welcome your ideas and feedback.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Charlton, Executive Director

We were grateful for this opportunity to serve alongside other charities and volunteers who sought to improve the lives of those in most need. Thanks to our generous supporters and collaborative partnerships, we were able to make an enormous difference.

One of the attendees at this year’s Project Homeless Connect event was overweight and barely able to walk. He couldn’t even muster the strength to lift himself in the medical van to be seen by our volunteer physicians. He had a history of heart problems, and on that day, was experiencing a tightness in the chest and shortness of breath coupled with alarmingly high blood pressure. Mission of Mercy staff acted immediately summoning emergency care to transport him to the local hospital.

Mission of Mercy was honored to have been selected by the Frederick County Commission for Women as one of the beneficiaries of the LPGA Symetra Tour’s recent Challenge at Musket Ridge in Myersville, Maryland.

The event, which was held in August, featured 144 professional women golfers from more than 30 different countries, all competing for a coveted spot on the 2013 LPGA tour.

Through this effort, much needed funds were raised for the patients of Mission of Mercy.

ConneCtions ProGram

This fall, Mission of Mercy’s Arizona program is set to complete the first year of a three-year pilot program, Community Connections. The program is funded by a generous three-year grant from the Bruce T. Halle Family Foundation. The foundation was created by Discount Tire Founder Bruce T. Halle and his wife, Dianne, and is designed to identify partnerships that provide health literacy, patient education and family support services, and “connect” patients directly with them. Mission of Mercy is committed to expanding

the Community Connections program to all five clinics in Arizona, as well as its Maryland/Pennsylvania and Texas sites. a CommUnity CHamPion

Marilyn Seymann, Chief Executive Officer of the Bruce T. Halle Family Foundation, explained that the Community Connections program aligns with the Foundation’s commitment to linking critical healthcare and human services to families and children living in Phoenix’s West Valley. Here, the greatest strain of the economic and housing crisis is felt. “Mission of Mercy’s ability to serve as a ‘hub,’ linking families to critical support

services in addition to primary healthcare, demonstrates the nonprofit’s commitment to impacting long-term outcomes for patients with a model that not only works, but is also sustainable. It’s the sort of program that will yield results and help strengthen the safety net for thousands of families who might otherwise slip through the cracks,” Seymann said. As Community Connections unfolds, Mission of Mercy will continue to identify additional resources through innovative collaborations and partnerships. As long as there is a need, the possibilities for Community Connections are limitless.

We were honored by the Texas Medical Association Foundation to receive the John P. McGovern Champion of Health Award Program in January. This honor, which comes with a $5,000 award, is given to organizations that are making a difference in improving the public health within a community. This award validates the exceptional work Mission of Mercy provides in the respective areas we cover.

Since the founding of the Texas Program, we have made diligent efforts to apply for funding to the Meadows Foundation. In March, we learned that an award for funding was approved for our program. Persistence

paid off, allowing us to continue operational support to maintain free medical and dental services for economically disadvantaged residents of South Texas.

Mission of Mercy Chief Medical Director, Dr. Michael Sullivan, received the Pius X High School Outstanding Alumni Award for 2012 in August.

This award is presented in appreciation of Sullivan, an outstanding representative of Pius X High School

in Lincoln, NE, who serves as an example of leadership and service to his family, friends, community and country.

Sullivan, a 1968 Pius X graduate, was born in Lincoln, NE in 1950. He attended Blessed Sacrament School through the 8th grade along with his two sisters. For two years, he pursued the discernment process for the priesthood at Our Lady of the Ozarks Minor Seminary in Carthage, Mo. He returned to Pius X High School for his junior and senior years, and then earned a combined academic/athletic scholarship to Regis College in Denver, Colo., where he graduated as valedictorian in 1972.

In 1993, Michael married Dr. Gianna Talone. Together, Michael and Gianna launched Mission of Mercy, which has served more than 85,000 patients in four states.

The most moving testaments to the power of our mission in the community often come directly from the mouths of our patients…

They treated me like a valuable human being with respect and with courtesy. People usually pass over me and don’t really see me. But they didn’t. They were a blessing to me. A blessing.

— DOnAlD G

It didn’t matter that my body was a walking wreck or that I had no money. Dr. Sullivan saw the human being in me and that was it. no doctor has ever just taken me for the person I was and treated me with such compassion, caring and understanding as Dr. Sullivan and his staff did.

— CAROle G.

each week the hardships that I would encounter at the shelter or on the street would be completely neutralized by the love and kindness that came from the “Angels” of Mission of Mercy. I am now working part time and with their help and prayers, I will soon be totally self-sufficient. each doctor and nurse and all who are affiliated with Mission of Mercy have my undying gratitude.

— JIM M.

Dear Mission of Mercy Team,

August 2nd was the single largest outreach service event for the

homeless in Baltimore history, and we were honored that Mission

of Mercy joined us in this endeavor. Every participant that I

talked to was overwhelmed with joy and thankfulness. For me,

Project Homeless Connect is a reminder of our basic humanity,

and your staff treated the guests with the respect and dignity

that they so deserve yet rarely receive.

Your team was simply amazing. From my perspective of having

connected with literally every service provider in the Baltimore

area, I say now with confidence that there is no other organization

that could have provided medical care to the homeless and

underserved as effectively and compassionately as you did.

You and your staff are truly on a mission of mercy, and it means

so much to me and to the people you serve to know that.

On behalf of all of us, thank you.

Sincerest regards,Scott Gottbreht, Johns Hopkins University
