September, 2012 Holy Family High School today following the completion of landscaping of the stadi-um and construction of a concession build-ing.

The 90th HFHS freshman class consisting of 175 young men and women, entered the doors of HFHS. They will experience many of the same traditions along with some new. The 90th anniversary school year consists of 606 students, 76 faculty and staff. 14 of those faculty and staff are alumni. During the late 1960’s, 6 Catholic High Schools in the Denver Archdiocese closed. In addition to HFHS grads, Jim Gerk who attended Mt. Carmel and St. Joe’s and Kathy Martinez and Diane Franca, who are Cathedral grads also work at the school.

1999 Sr. Mary Rose Lieb, O.S.F., principal of HFHS, supervised the school’s move to the new Broomfield campus. The new location boasts a chapel, theater, gymnasium, modernized science labs, athletic fields and parking lot for students and staff.

2008 The Holy Family community provided the funding for a new Holy Family statue at the Broomfield campus.

2012 The 87th graduating class of 129 celebrated with the first outdoor ceremony. The event took place at the newly landscaped Mike G. Gabriel Stadium.

The Class of 1962 celebrated its 50th reunion and Golden Diploma weekend on August 3rd, 4th and 5th. Holy Family High School hosted a Golden Diploma Mass on the 5th followed by brunch at the school which was pre-pared by HFHS Cafeteria Manager, Vicki Burke an HFHS alum. It was in June of 1962 that all graduating seniors from Denver's Parochial Schools assembled in the City Auditorium to receive their high school diplomas. Now fifty years later, the Holy Family Class of 1962 shared their Golden Diploma celebration with the 1962 graduates from the six other Catholic High Schools which closed in the late 60s and early 70s. They also invited grads who started their high school years at Holy Family but moved to another high school to share in the Mass of Celebration and to receive a Golden Diploma. Class members come together again at the Homecoming football game which will be celebrated on September 28. A representative from the class of 1962 will crown the 2012 Queen and King. Contact Patty Gabriel at the school for further information. View pictures of the Golden Diploma celebration at http://holyfamilyhs.com/golden%20Diploma%20pictures%201962

The Class of 1972 will hold their 40th year reunion the weekend of September 28-30, 2012 in conjunction with Holy Family’s Homecoming and 90th Anniversary weekend. If you haven’t received an invitation, please let the com-mittee know by emailing them @ [email protected] or by calling Jeanne (Langfield) Norville at 720-519-0821. Holy Family Parish Bazaar was the kickoff venue for the Class of 1982 reunion. On July 13, 14, 15 the class en-joyed memories of their years together on Utica Street. The Class of 1987 celebrated their 25th reunion during the weekend of August 24-26. Events included a Cocktail Reception on the 24th, a 9-hole golf outing on the 25th at Willis Case Golf Course and a family pot luck picnic at Berkley Park on Sunday the 26th. They shared memories of the past in the old neighborhood. The Class of 1992 will join former classmates as they celebrate their 20th high school reunion. Events will take place over Homecoming weekend, September 28th and 29th. September 28th they will join the homecoming festiv-ities at HFHS for the Chili Supper and Homecoming football game as they sit together to cheer on the Tigers. On Saturday, September 29th members of the class will take part in the Alumni Association Bocce Tournament. Later that night, the class will meet at Ernie's Supper Club in the old neighborhood. Monica Stokes Class of 2013 Over the summer while most students were enjoying the freedom from school-work and professionalism, I had the privilege to put on a dress, a media pass, and some black flats to attend the Installation of Samuel J. Aquila as the fifth Arch-bishop of Denver. On July 18, the Archdioceses of Denver and the Vatican gave Denver its eighth bishop and fifth archbishop at Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver. As I entered the cathedral before the 800 invited guests, the vaulted ceil-ing and soaring 60-voice choir gave the feeling of a heavenly and peaceful at-mosphere. Flags whipped in the wind above the Cathedral’s doors, which welcomed the procession made up of the Knights of Columbus, papal knights and women from many orders. Over 300 priests and dea-cons, 39 bishops, Cardinal J. Francis Stafford, Former Archbishop Charles J. Chaput were in attendance. U.S. Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano also attended as representative for Pope Benedict XVI. Archbishop Aquila was ordained a priest at the Cathedral Basilica in 1976, which is ironic and unique because he had the privilege to be installed as archbishop in the same place he began his journey. “Never did I imagine 36 years ago that I would be standing here,” said Archbishop Aquila. Archbishop Aquila previously served as the bishop of Fargo, North Dakota and many from his Dioceses attended the installa-tion mass to support their fellow bishop in his next step. The installation process was very unique and nothing that I have had any past education on. Archbishop Vigano read what is called the apostolic mandate that makes the entire appointment official. The mandate was then inspected by the College of Consulters which is a senior body of priests who advise the arch-bishop. Next, the installation was recorded and the crosier, which is the official term for the golden almost shep-herd-like cane that is about the height of the Archbishop, was presented to Archbishop Aquila and he was led to the cathedra, which is the special chair that gives the cathedral its name and from which the arch-bishop preaches. As he sat down, the entire audience erupted with applause. After the official installation process took place and Archbishop Aquila was seated in the cathedra, he began his Homily. The arch-bishop opened the Homily with a joke, saying, “My heart was filled with great joy as I walked and en-tered into this cathedral as I gazed upon many of you, who have aged as I have aged in the past 10 years,” which caused the audience to break out in laughter. In his homily, Archbishop Aquila touched on many subjects. Some high-lights were his dedication to the church, his vision as Archbishop of Denver, and our lives as Christians in a contradictory world. The fifth Archbishop of Denver was made official in a beautiful ceremony that I was lucky to attend and I am, as I am sure many Catholics in Denver are, excited for the passion, energy, love, and faith Archbishop Aquila holds, and will bring. I am certain that he will lead us wisely and closer to God. We welcome you Archbishop Aquila!
