Fall 2012

Walking up to the new suspended roller coaster, Jenny thought that she could just hang out with her friends in line and wait for them after the ride. She didn’t want to be by herself for so long outside of the ride, and she thought that all of her friends who had ridden the ride before would make fun of her for chickening out. So Jenny went along with everyone else, planning to step through the coaster at the very last. When she got to the coaster, though, she didn’t have any room to scoot through because her friends had purposely blocked her in the middle. “You all are going to pay for this,” Jenny screamed, but they didn’t budge as the shoulder straps snapped in and the seats were leaned back. As the group went up the hill on their backs, Jenny tried to focus on something else, a cloud, the clinking of the chain. But halfway up she gave in and grabbed the hands of her two friends on either side and braced herself for the hill.

As the car edged over the hill Jenny clenched every muscle in her body and screamed out. When she opened her eyes, the car had flipped and she felt like she was flying. Jenny let go of her friends’ hands and put her’s out in front with a loud “woo hoo!”. At the end of the ride she couldn’t contain her laughter, and as they stepped off, Jenny asked everyone “What’s next?” The next year as Jenny’s group headed up to the park, she was the first one to encourage others who hadn’t ridden before to get on that ride. She brought three new people on the ride with her who had never ridden a roller coaster in their lives. And when it was done, they all asked the same question, “Can we do it again?” Many times for our students the toughest part of putting their faith into motion is just getting started. The thought of really serving God in worship, in study, in service, and especially in evangelism, is more daunting than the

highest roller coaster. But what we’ve seen is that when students step out and start really experiencing God in their lives, not only do they want more, but they want to bring all of their friends along with them. That’s why our goal in the ministry is not to simply teach our children and student, but to make them active participants in God’s Kingdom. This happens at church, with friends, on teams or organizations, but most importantly, it happens at home. Parents are the primary spiritual influence on their children. We want to encourage you as parents to be the friends that come along side your children and don’t let them step off the ride. We believe that as a team, we can all experience the thrill of living for God together!

GET CONNECTEDAt Tates Creek we place a high importance on each person having opportunities to deepen their relationship with Christ and

others. The activities on this page identify special events or groups you might consider in order to connect with others. As a youth team, we believe that the number one

influence in a child’s life are the parents and primary caregivers. With that being said we also believe it is essential that these

important people are growing spiritually so that they can continue to help their children grow.

With “Jesus in the Park’, Preschoolers begin learning the fundamentals of worshipping God through song, Bible verses, and stories/lessons!

During the months of June and July the children were brought to Creation Station, where we had

our Creation Train help us learn about God making the world in seven days. We had some great conductors and helpers! The children’s favorite was the third day, in which God made mud. Who doesn’t love mud?

ELEMENTARY

Thanks for a great summer kids, families, and family of TCCC! From a record number of kids at Day Camp packing more than 500 meals for the people of Haiti to 49 kids going to 7-11 camp. From nearly 60 families at Impact to more than 400 people witnessing the battle between David and Goliath at Party in the Park. From more than 250 backpacks packed for our friends at Julius Marks Elementary to a great night of fellowship at Collins Bowling with families. From Flip-flopped on Sunday mornings to the many volunteers that served the families at Impact and Party in the Park! All of these things were exciting to be a part of and great opportunities to be a part of the church, but none of them compare to the two biggest stories that happened this summer! The baptisms of Emma Durrum and Sarah Childers were the highlight of the summer, and I can’t wait to see where God leads these two incredible girls in their journey with Him through Jesus. Thanks for a great summer, TCCC families and welcome to the family Emma and Sarah!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

One of our main goals in middle school is to get students started with their own personal devotional life. This summer during our series called “Hunger Games” the students were challenged to read through the book of Revelation during the series. For many middle school students, the thought of working through that book of the Bible is scary, but I was surprised at just how quickly many of our students picked up the challenge. In order to remind them I would send out a daily email and text message with that day’s reading and a trivia question to check their reading. I was really surprised to hear back from half of the group the first day, even students who were new! Not only that, but if I didn’t

send out the reminders quickly enough, I would get emails and texts from the students letting me know they had already read the chapter and were waiting for the question. Talk about accountability! But even more than that, many of the questions I posed to them forced them to think and make connections across the Bible. I thought that many of them would be difficult for our students, but they were thinking through all of the symbolism in Revelation. It also shows that parents were taking the challenge on with their students, and that is something to really celebrate about our middle school ministry!

We will take a look at how social media has changed theway we look at making friends and what goes intochoosing good friends both in real life and online.

Jesus’ life and ministry changed the world, but sometimes wedon’t delve into those three years to see how His teachingschallenge each of us.

Abraham’s faith pressed through a number of disappointmentsand confusions, and we will be encouraged to press on in ourlives with the same faith Abraham had.

Our technology driven culture has changed the way we look atthings, and it’s even changed our expectations for church andfamily. We will look at how to follow Jesus in a simple wayleading up to Christmas.

HIGH SCHOOL

I  am  super  excited  to  kick  off  our  Fall  programming  schedule  and  see  what  God  has  in  store!    I  have  been  very  encouraged  by  the  relationships  I’ve  built  so  far  with  our  high  school  students.

The  high  point  of  the  summer  for  me  was  spending  my  very  Kirst  week  here  as  High  School  Minister  in  Panama  City,  Florida  with  our  students  for  C.I.Y.  Move  Conference.    What  better  way  to  get  to  know  a  group  of  high  school  students  than  to  spend  a  week  laughing,  praying,  worshipping,  crying,  and  enjoying  the  beach  with  them!    I  am  so  glad  I  had  the  opportunity  to  get  to  know  our  students  so  quickly.    Several  other  Lexington  churches  went  to  the  same  conference  we  did  and  it  was  kind  of  funny  to  meet  the  other  area  youth  ministers.    They  would  ask  how  long  I  had  been  at  Tates  Creek  and  I  got  to

answer  with  “Today  is  actually  my  Kirst  day!”.    That  one  got  a  lot  of  laughs.    And  then  it  got  even  more  laughs  when  I  told  them  I  was  serious,  LOL!

C.I.Y.  was  really  awesome  this  year.    I  saw  lots  of  life  change  taking  place  in  our  students.    We  were  challenged  to  trust  God,  accept  his  forgiveness,  forgive  those  around  us  (we  even  experienced  a  very  powerful  time  to  offer  forgiveness  to  those  in  our  own  group!),  and  to  be  active  in  God’s  Kingdom.    We  even  had  three  students  who  committed  their  lives  to  full  time  ministry!

C.I.Y.  was  a  great  springboard  for  me  to  get  to  know  our  students  personally  and  jump  right  into  the  high  school  ministry  here  at  Tates  Creek  Christian.    I  am  so  excited  to  build  on  relationships  that  were  begun  there  and  also  to  continue  to  build  new  ones!

September 3: Kings Island Trip

November 16-18: Fall Retreat

September  9th-‐26th  Ask  anyone  who's  ever  run  into  a  sliding  glass  door  that  was  closed,  or  went  for  the  same  baseball  as  a  teammate,  or  experienced  a  fender  bender  at  a  stoplight-‐a  collision  changes  things.  Whether  it's  a  bump  on  the  head  or  a  cracked  bumper,  something  is  not  the  same  as  it  was  before.  The  same  thing  happens  when  we  collide  with  God  or  His  truth  or  even  other  people.  We're  changed.  But  unless  we  put  ourselves  in  a  position  to  collide,  everything  will  stay  the  same.  So  are  you  ready  to  change,  are  you  ready  to  collide?

September  30th-‐October  17thThink  about  the  last  time  you  heard  the  word  "blessed."  What  came  to  mind?  For  many  of  us-‐-‐and  many  of  our  students-‐-‐the  word  blessed  conjures  up  images  of  the  coolest  clothes,  the  newest  gadgets  and  a  worry-‐free  life.  But  when  we  look  at  what  God  has  to  say  about  being  blessed,  we  realize  that  we  probably  have  things  pretty  mixed  up.  Because  if  being  blessed  is  more  about  our  relationships-‐-‐and  what  we  do  with  them-‐-‐than  the  stuff  we  have,  we  may  have  some  reevaluating  to  do  in  order  to  redeKine  what  it  means  to  be  blessed  and  realize  that  we  might  just  be  more  blessed  than  we  originally  thought.

October  21st-‐November  7thWe  all  like  to  receive  letters.  These  days  they  come  primarily  in  an  e-‐mail  but  in  Biblical  times,  letters  were  handwritten.  The  apostle  Paul  wrote  a  lot  of  letters,  many  of  which  are  included  in  the  Bible.  His  letters  were  intended  to  help  the  early  church  sort  out  what  it  meant  to  really  follow  Jesus.  But  the  Galatians  may  not  have  been  too  excited  to  get  Paul's  letter  because  Paul  was  mad.  The  Galatian  church  was  a  mess.  People  were  saying  that  what  Jesus  did  on  the  cross  wasn't  enough.  They  were  looking  around  and  determining  who  was  in  with  God,  and  who  was  out.  So  Paul  set  out  to  bring  some  clarity  to  the  situation  in  the  passionate,  sound  way  that  only  He  could.  And  while  this  may  seem  like  a  great  look  back  in  history,  we  probably  have  more  in  common  with  the  Galatians  than  we  would  care  to  admit.

November  11th&14thWe  often  overlook  people  that  we  don’t  think  are  that  interesting,  that  cool  or  that  much  like  us.  Sometimes  it  is  someone  we  see  every  day  at  school  and  sometimes  it  is  someone  we  only  see  once  a  year.  But  when  we  take  the  time  to  stop  and  listen,  we  are  reminded  of  how  powerful  someone’s  story  can  be.  We  see  that  our  preconceived  notions  and  judgments  weren’t  just  wrong,  they  were  harmful.  And  not  just  to  the  person  we  have  left  out.  To  us  as  well.  Because  when  we  judge  and  label,  we  miss  out.  But  when  we  sit  and  open  our  ears  to  the  deep  message  of  someone  else’s  life,  we  open  ourselves  up  to  seeing  what  God  has  done  and  learning  something  new  about  them  and  about  ourselves.

November  25th-‐December  12th  This  Christmas,  probably  more  than  any  other  in  recent  years,  we  are  hoping  that  life  will  get  better.  We  are  hoping  that  life  will  look  differently  next  year,  even  if  we're  not  sure  how.  We  realize  that  no  one  person  or  institution  holds  a  solution,  but  we're  expecting  something  different,  even  if  we're  not  sure  how  that  is  going  to  work  out.  That's  why  many  of  the  words  we  use  around  Christmas  time-‐-‐words  like  hope,  peace  and  love-‐-‐have  a  new  depth  of  meaning  this  year.  We're  waiting  to  have  hope,  peace  and  love  in  our  lives,  in  our  communities,  in  our  world.  Even  if  we're  not  sure  how  it  will  all  work  out.  And  just  like  thousands  of  years  ago,  Jesus  is  the  one  who  came  to  bring  hope,  peace  and  love  to  our  lives  then  .  .  .  and  now.  Jesus  taught  us  how  to  Kind  hope,  bring  peace  and  initiate  love  even  when  our  circumstances  are  less  than  ideal.
