SIGNING SAFARI™Research has conclusively proven that once hearing toddlers are taught to sign their brains actually become more developed! Benefits include preverbal communication, earlier speech development, larger vocabularies, enhanced intellectual development, and less frustration (less crying, fewer tantrums!). During these classes, taught in collaboration with Signing Sa-fariTM child sign language specialists, participants will use singing, signing, playing, and rhyming to learn the signs for different parts of nature. DINO DIGSAre dinosaurs really all gone? We will find out by becoming fossil hunters. Join us as we dig up dinosaur “remains” in our rooms. Then hike around the Zoo and we may encounter some dinosaur relatives. Each fossil hunter will be able to take home a part of our “fossil” record. BEING GROSS IS GREAT!From dung beetles to ring-tailed lemurs, animals have some pretty strange and even gross behaviors! Find out exactly what it takes to be “gross” and why it’s so helpful, too! THE UNHUGGABLESCreep, crawl, or slither in for this program on some of the world’s less cuddly animals. After some games and a craft, we’ll meet some of these “unhuggable” animal friends and separate the fact from fiction that surrounds them. MASTERS OF THE NIGHTFrom the tiny bumblebee bat to the flying fox, bats are one of the most numerous species of mammal - and the only ones that can fly! MIGRATION EXPLORATIONFall marks the migration of several of our feathered summer residents. Explore the basics of bird watching as we learn to identify some of the most common Ohio birds. ANIMALS IN JEOPARDYIn order to survive in the wild, wildlife has to overcome many challenges. Test your endangered animal knowledge with a game of Animal Jeopardy and then head out to the Zoo to look at some endangered species and what steps are being taken to conserve these beautiful animals. ZOO PHOTOGRAPHY 101The Zoo is a great place to learn to be a shutterbug! From the little details to the bigger picture, we’ll learn the basics about framing a cool shot and capturing dif-ferent animal behaviors. Participants must bring a camera that they know how to operate.

BACKSTAGE PASS JRIs your 12-14 year old looking for a more in-depth, once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Zoo? These specially designed classes allow an opportunity for an up-close and personal look at some of the places the Zoo animals call home, and most even include an encounter with Zoo animals! All participants will receive a keepsake backstage pass nametag on a zoo-themed lanyard as a souvenir of their adventure.Note: Due to the nature of these programs, age limits must be adhered to. In addition, due to space restrictions, parents cannot be accommodated in behind-the-scenes areas.

MANATEE SPRINGS Come get an above the tank look at the Manatee Springs exhibit and the manatees that call it home. We’ll learn about the ins and outs of the care and maintenance of these amazing aquatic mammals from their keepers and even get to build an enrichment treat for them to enjoy. Dates: September 29: 11 am-Noon Cost per Class: Members: $30 / Non-Members: $45

TIGERSBig powerful claws, dagger like teeth, and the power and agility to take down prey up to five times its size! Tigers are amazing preda-tors that you want to know more about! Learn more about these rare cats and most importantly easy things we can all do to help protect them. Come discover our NEW exhibit, Cat Canyon, and leave a feline expert!.

Dates: November 3: 1-2:30 pm

These fun, interactive, 2.5 hour scout programs help your troop or den completeall requirements necessary to earn a scouting badge or achievement.

Each program includes an animal demonstration, Zoo hike, andother activities such as a game or craft.

Programs are offered every Saturday at either 9:30am-noon or 1-3:30 pm, and every Sunday (March–May and September–mid-November) from 1-3:30pm.

THE ZOO GOURMET

Back by popular demand! Food is a huge part of celebrating holi-days. At the Zoo, our animals feast year-round on carefully planned diets. The Zoo goes around the globe, sparing no expense, to procure the very freshest whole foods, anywhere – for our animals. Join us for a holiday food frenzy and learn how we feed thousands

of animals healthy diets every day. Through a game, close encounters, and a behind the scenes tour of the Zoo’s commissary, find out why different animals eat differ-ent foods, how the Zoo manages its menus and get some fresh ideas about staying healthy yourself!

MANY, MANY MOONS AGOJoin us for an afternoon of traditional tales charismatically presented by local Native American storyteller, Fred Shaw. The entire family will enjoy stories of the animals that live around us such as opossums, turtles, and hawks and visits from several Zoo animals.

FAMILY NIGHT HIKESWould you like to prowl the Zoo after hours when the crowds have gone home? Well, come on down for these fun-filled, family-oriented evening adventures at the Zoo!

CREEPY CRAWLIES Things that go bump - or hiss - in the night! From creatures with eight legs to those with no legs, there sure are some wild, hair-raising animals here at the Zoo! We’ll hike around the zoo and get up close and personal with some of the Zoo’s very own education animals while we learn about what makes these creepy crawlies so unique!

Dates: October 6, 13, 20 or 27: 6:00-7:30 pm Cost: Members: $7/Adult, $7/Child Non-Members: $11/Adult, $11/Child

FAMILY SING-ALONGThese programs, taught by Amanda O’Bannon of Miss Amanda’s Music Garden, are designed for families with children five years and younger. Classes involve singing,dancing, and dramatic play that is sure to get the whole family movin’ and groovin’and live animal demonstrations that tie into the theme of the programs.

FALLING LEAVES Leaves and snowflakes are falling, animals are making winter nests, and the earth is getting ready for a long winter nap. We’ll use music and movement to move and sing like the plants and the animals getting ready for winter! We’ll even get to meet some animal friends in the classroom.

Note: Due to the special nature of this program, siblings not falling within the 0-5yr age range cannot be accommodated. Siblings under 1yr of age and adults (up to two) accompanying paying participants are free.

THE CONTINUING ADVENTURES OFJOHNNY APPLESEEDRattlesnakes, passenger pigeons, bears and the Apple of our Eye add to the legend of Johnny Appleseed. Meet him in person as Johnny comes to the Zoo to share his many entertaining adventures on the Ohio frontier. Doug Horvath, Johnny Appleseed storyteller for over 20 years, shares a living memory of John Chapman and tales people still tell about Johnny today. Together, we can still connect to Johnny’s good work as we visit the Zoo and live our lives.

Dates: September 15: 10--11:15 am or 1-2:15 pm Cost: FREE (Pre-Registration Required)

Roar like a tiger. Fly like a bird. Move as slowly as a sloth. Explore the world of animals and plants in a fun new way – through yoga! You and your child will discover more about animals and plants through the practice of yoga. This fun and active program is a beginner/mid-level level class for adults and children and can serve as a great founda-tion for developing an interest in wildlife and fitness that can last a lifetime. Yoga mats are provided. Please bring a bottle of water and wear comfortable clothing.

FAMILY SLEEP WITH THE MANATEESAdults and children 5 years old and up are invited to spend the night with our resident Florida manatees- Wooten, and 2400-pound Betsy. During this over night you will enjoy two sneak peaks behind the scenes, play games, and fall asleep with manatees swimming at your feet.

FAMILY “HOWL”-OWEEN OVERNIGHTAdults and children 5 years old and up will explore the world of wolves and other “top dogs” at the Zoo! While prowling around at night, you will learn what makes predators so special. Don’t forget your Halloween costumes! HallZoo-ween takes place the next day from noon-5pm and your little ghouls can trick-or-treat their way around the Zoo at no extra charge!

THE HIDDEN ZOO Back by popular demand! Did you know that the Zoo has an off-grounds breeding facility to house animals that are between exhibits or need privacy in order to successfully breed? The Mast Farm is just that place! Don’t forget your camera, because during this program, you will get a behind-the-scenes look at rare animals like the Zoo’s cheetahs and tufted deer that call the farm home. You will also get the inside scoop on when there will be more baby cheetahs on the way! Dates: September 8: 8:00-9:30 am

BACKSTAGE PASSAre you looking for a more intimate, once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Zoo? Look no further than the Backstage Pass Programs! All programs include an up-close and personal look at some of the places the Zoo animals call home and most even include an encounter with Zoo animals. All participants will receive a keepsake backstage pass on a zoo-themed lanyard as a souvenir of your adventure.

Cost: Members: $45 / Non-Members: $60

LIGHTS OUT! What do the Zoo’s vampire bats eat? Do the aardvarks have names? Come explore the new Night Hunters exhibit with a keeper as your guide and learn the answers to these questions and other tricks of the trade when caring for a collection that works the nightshift. Dates: September 15: 10-11am

FALL WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHYWildlife photography can be one of the most fun and rewarding hobbies around and who could be better to learn from than professional photographer and Zoo horticulturist, Brian Jorg. This class, geared toward beginner photographers, will blend technical expertise with knowledge of wildlife and the Zoo’s collection. You will learn how to get the most out of your camera and how understanding animal behavior will improve your photographs. Then, we will venture out into the Zoo to test your skills. Participants must provide their own camera.
