SUPERINTENDENT’SCOMMENTS www.rutlandrec.com

Now that summer is coming to an end, it’s timeto gear up for all of the fun activities we haveplanned for the upcoming months. I’m sure you

will find something in this brochure that interests you!Don’t forget to get out and enjoy the parks. Several ofour parks have benches and/or picnic tables so you cansit and relax or maybe have an outside lunch with yourfamily and friends. Plan to take a modest walk whileyou’re there. Exercise and quality leisure time is goodfor the mind, body and soul!

The staff has been busy over the summer running afull menu of programs that this community anticipates. In addition to all of the activities, we have completedthe park repairs related to the storm “Irene”. In mostcases, we not only repaired the damage, but wereable to make significant improvements to the park. Icontinue to be grateful for and appreciate all of thewonderful people who work for this department. Theirdedication to make a difference in this community isoutstanding.

We are grateful to Senator Sanders for acquiringsome federal dollars to assist us in several renovationprojects and some new amenities at the Godnick AdultCenter. With this federal funding, some City moneyand help from Efficiency Vermont, the center now hasa new and improved parking lot, a complete energyretrofit including new replacement windows that willsave taxpayer resources in the years to come, a kitchenrenovation with new appliances and new dinnerwareand silverware, new chairs to supplement the onespurchased by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and improvements to the acoustics in the facility. These upgrades coupled with several other projectscompleted at the Godnick Center over the last few yearswill ensure its viability in the years to come.

The wait continues for final confirmation from theUnited States Army about the transfer of the CourcelleBrothers Reserve Center. Once we get the go ahead,we will begin the relocation of our maintenancedivision. This facility will be an ideal location forthat operation and will provide enough space for theproper storage of all of our equipment and supplies.Presently we rent space and have to store many piecesof equipment outside and store supplies in severaldifferent locations. The Courcelle facility will allow usto consolidate the entire maintenance operation intoone location establishing a more efficient operationand providing opportunities to develop the space inorder to better service the park infrastructure. We alsoanticipate having space to provide some programmingas well.

I urge you to take advantage of the manyopportunities we provide. From parks to programs thisdepartment offers an abundance of quality serviceswith the resources available.

Thank you to the Rutland Herald and to thebusinesses that choose to support our department byadvertising in this publication. Don’t forget to lookfor weekly updates every Wednesday in the Heraldand visit our website at rutlandrec.com for news onongoing and upcoming programs and events.

Enjoy the rest of the summer,
