In order to commemorate the occasion and to pay tribute to the many changes and transformations the library has experienced during these years, staff members have planned a number of special events. (p.2) If you have visited the library during the past several weeks, you may have noticed a photo display being exhibited next to the new fiction shelves located at the front of the library. These photographs chronicle the journey of our library over the course of the last four decades, providing a visual stroll down memory lane. Be sure to stop in to take a fond look back. In 1935, the federal government built a brand new post office for the Village of Melrose Park at 801 N. Broadway. By the 1960s, this building was obsolete and a new post office was constructed on 25 th just south of North Avenue. In 1969, the village bought the property on Broadway in order to convert the old post office building into a brand new library, and on October 10, 1971, the library was dedicated and opened to the public. Join us as we commemorate the 40 th anniversary of our library here on Broadway Avenue. As we celebrate “40 Years On Broadway,” we’ll be sharing with you photos of our library’s construction, it’s history throughout those years and vintage newspaper stories from the Herald and the Star-Sentinel.

On October 10, 2011, the Melrose Park Public Library will be celebrating forty years at our current location at 801 Broadway. Retro-Crafts Saturday, October 15: 11-1 pm Remember potholder looms, macramé bracelets, and bedazzling? Join us to make

some crafts that were popular forty years ago. Retro Disaster Flick: Airport Saturday, October 1: 11am Join us as we screen one of the first and finest “disaster movies” ever made. Throwback Week: October 11-15

• Bring back the bell bottoms! Staff members will be dressing 70s-style all week long.

• Fine rollback: Melrose Park Books with a due date from Sept. 19-Oct.14 will be charged only .05 a day. Does not apply to fines and fees already accrued and excludes DVDs and CDs. Offer expires Oct. 16.

put money on your SAM account for printing.

• Sit down at an available computer and enter your library card # and PIN.

• Guest passes are avail-able for $3 for 1.5 hrs.

We may be going retro in October, but you have probably noticed some recent changes in the library. In addition to eReaders and eBooks, we now have a brand new computer reservation and printing system. With “SAM,” Patrons are now able to log directly onto any

Halloween Masks & Photo Booth

Come Trick-or-Treat at the library! We will have a mask craft station set up and a fun photo booth where you can model your Halloween costume or mask craft.

Craft: Monday, October 31: 3-5pm

Get Crafty

It’s time to get out your creative side! The library is hosting a monthly craft event for children in grades K-3 to make a special treasure to take home. Crafts are limited to 15 kids per month, so be sure to register early to reserve your spot.

Wednesdays: 4-5pm September 14, October 12, November 9, December 14

I Spy!

Come to the library and join our giant game of “I Spy.” Pick up a worksheet at the Youth Services desk and spy the different objects all over the library. Once you finish your sheet, turn it in to enter our raffle to win an “I Spy” book.

All ages No registration required Tuesday, November 22: 3-8pm

Magic Tree House Join us each month as we take an adventure with Jack and Annie! We will have games, trivia, and activities all about the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osbourne. Grades K-5. Wednesdays: 4-5pm September 21, October 12, November 9, December 14

Author Adventures Join us each month as we celebrate a famous children’s author! We will have stories, games, and a simple craft. For kids in grades K-3. Registration is required. Thursdays: 4-5pm September 22, October 20, November 9, December 14

Lego Club Join us for a monthly Lego club! Kids in grades K-5 will be able to make Lego creations at the library. Wednesdays: 4-5pm September 7 October 26 November 2 December 7

Looking for an outing for your daycare? Join us each week for songs, rhymes, and lots of great books. Please fill out a Daycare Information Sheet prior to registration.
