Selection criteria used:

Throughout the process of creating this order, I kept specific collection criteria in mind.

First, I only selected books that fell into the copyright period of 2010-2011 to ensure that

my order was up to date. This was very important, as about half of my order was non

fiction material. Also, I kept in mind the curriculum for grades PreK-5 by referring to my

school’s curriculum chart that I created. I also considered the reading interests of the

student body and the personal needs of the students and school based on the school

analysis I created. Finally, I also carefully considered and utilized quality selection

sources to find two positive reviews per item.

Preference for journals and publishers:

The selection sources that I found to be the most helpful included Booklist, School

Library Journal and Library Media Connection. I primarily used Booklist because I

wanted quality reviews, which this review source uses from ALA. Booklist also provides

positive reviews which I felt utilized my time the best in reading various reviews. School

Library Journal was another favorite selection source, as it gave the most current reviews

and also provided reviews for non print materials. This selections source also reviews

graphic novels, which was a primary focus for me throughout the order. Library Media

Connection was another very helpful review source since it clearly spells out if a title is

recommended or not. This was very helpful when I was questioning a review as either

positive or negative. Often times I would use Library Media Connection as a deciding

factor while selecting if I found conflicting reviews.

I mainly focused on using good review sources and less on publishers. Some publishers

that I found were ones I had heard of and therefore felt more comfortable with. For

example, I selected some Houghton Mifflin books, as those are often texts used within

classrooms. Scholastic was another company I knew of and felt confident in ordering

from. Mainly, I focused on the content of the book and the quality of the reviews it had

received.

Difficulties encountered:

While completing this order, the most challenging aspect was the amount of time it took

to create a curriculum/student centered order. Finding reviews and deciding on materials

to order was actually a lot of fun; however, it was the careful thought process behind each

order was time consuming. I tried my very best not to order something just for the sake

or ordering, but rather ordering something that met the curriculum and/or student interest.

Once I was more familiar and comfortable utilizing the selection sources, I found the

process came more naturally and even became quicker. Another difficulty in creating

this order was trying to find specific content books with at least two positive reviews. As

mentioned in class, it is possible to have a subject in mind for ordering and the materials

that are available on that subject are not plentiful. This occurred as I was trying to find

text related to the 4th

-5th

grade social studies units. While I found some material related

to those topics, I was hoping to find more.

Lessons learned:

From the beginning to the end of this order, I learned one very important lesson. This

lesson is prior to creating an order, it is essential to have your homework done! For

example, before I could even begin to determine what types of books that needed to be

ordered, there were other factors that came into play. The needs of the students and the

entire school were a critical component and could only have been done with the use of

my school analysis. Without that important document, I would not have known the

personal needs or interests of the students in my building. In addition, I also needed to

have my homework done by completing my curriculum chart. This document proved to

be my life saver as I ordered each item individually. Again, without this document, I

would have had no starting point and no clear direction as to what was being taught in

each grade level and in each subject. Finally, another piece of homework that assisted in

my ordering decisions was collection evaluation. While I only focused on one small

section of the collection in the evaluation, I was still able to use that in my materials

order. Knowing the deficit in the physics section allowed me to focus my attention

towards filling that gap in the collection. I was able to find 3-4 items that could be used

and will be suggested to my librarian to include in her order.
