A Message from the President of Killarney Community Centre SocietyWanted: Your Great Funding Ideas!

Did you know city services and amenities were severely restricted or entirely lost due to budgetary cutbacks by CityCouncil and Parks Board? There was news coverage on the Stanley Park Petting Zoo and the Bloedel Conservatory, butmany other essential services facing restrictions did not make the headlines. Community Associations were required tooffset the Parks Board operating shortfall of $618,000.00, and the Killarney Board contributed $51,213.00 of thecommunity’s funds toward this shortfall.

The Board’s mandate is to offer programs and reinvest funds back into the community. We at Killarney cannot continue to fund and sustain Park Board’s budgetary shortfall - our contribution will be a one-time contribution for fiscal year 2010 only.

Your Board at Killarney has reviewed ways of recouping the large loss to the bottom line. Among those ideas: increasingmembership fees, applying a surtax on programs (as many other Associations have done), or placing a reduction on centreoperating hours. We are aware these may be self-defeating - in an attempt to make efficiencies, we may lose ourmembership. For these reasons, the Killarney Board has made the decision NOT to implement these measures. Instead,we continue to explore creative funding ideas.

We invite active participation from our community. If you have any comments or suggestions for creative funding, pleasesubmit your written ideas and drop them off at the front desk. Your submissions will be held in strictest confidence and begiven due consideration when the Board makes its next financial decisions.

I remain yours sincerely,Kim HoganPresident KCCS
