“I’ve never had a family home, which was my greatest dream. I’m a 50 year old mother of four children. Fifteen years ago, after the birth of my fourth child, I had a stroke. This, I thought, was the end of my life. I wanted my own home so that I could plant flowers, sit on my porch with family and friends, drink my morning coffee on my porch and listen to birds sing in my yard, be able to watch my grandchildren play in my yard or have my family over for barbeques. Blessings in my own home, prayer in my own home, praises in my own home and joy in my own home… let me know that my dream is alive.” -Ms. Beryl *Ms. Beryl has been in her Habitat home since June Left to Right: HFHMGC BOD Members Edmond Hughes, Delmar Robinson, Latan Griffin, HFHMGC COO Barbara Levine, First Lady Marsha Barbour, Governer Haley Barbour, HFHMGC Homebuyer Doris Freeman, Long Beach Mayor Billie Skellie, Pascagoula Mayor Robbie Maxwell, HFHMGC CEO Chris Monforton Governor Welcomes Families Home Thrivent Lane Ribbon Cutting in Long Beach CEO Chris Monforton greets Governor Haley Barbour Thrivent Lane at the Trace Subdivision, Long Beach, MS In This Issue: •HFHMGC Goes Green •World Habitat Day •Welcome New AmeriCorps •And much more! Vol. 1, Issue 2 Fall 2009 By Meg Potts Thrivent Lane was full of celebration this summer as Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast hosted various dignitaries in the subdivision. On August 28, HFHMGC’s leadership team toured the newly constructed street with HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour. The neighborhood, completed this past Spring, sparked great conversation regarding the recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast. The following day, Saturday, August 29, Governor Barbour returned to Thrivent Lane, along with First Lady Marsha Barbour, to participate in a key and bible presentation and ribbon cutting. Located in Long Beach, Thrivent Lane is a twenty-eight home development sponsored by Thrivent Builds, a strategic alliance between Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Through this alliance, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has donated $125 million to Habitat for Humanity affiliates worldwide. The ribbon cutting also marked four years since Hurricane Katrina made landfall. Governor and First Lady Barbour, along with Long Beach Mayor Billie Skellie and Pascagoula Mayor Robbie Maxwell were among those in attendance. Also celebrating were HFHMGC volunteers, HFHMGC homebuyers, HFHMGC board members and friends in the community. The program began with a prayer read by HFHMGC homebuyer and Thrivent Lane resident, Doris Freeman, and continued with speeches from Board Treasurer Delmar Robinson, Mayor Billie Skellie, HFHMGC CEO Chris Monforton and Governor Barbour. Governor and First Lady Barbour presented keys and a Bible to Ms. Freeman before all participated in the ribbon cutting. The ribbon cutting ceremony highlighted the progress made along the Gulf Coast since Hurricane Katrina and HFHMGC’s commitment to the area. CEO Chris Monforton, also hoped the event would create happier memories, especially for Mississippi’s young residents. “For many Thrivent Lane residents, too young to have experienced Katrina, let August 29th be remembered as the day you were welcomed into your new homes by your community.” When the storm tore through in 2005, its sheer force destroyed 300,000 homes and damaged countless others. Thanks to the help of more than 21,000 volunteers and endless support from friends in the area and organizations worldwide, HFHMGC has been given the opportunity to help provide homes and hope for South Mississippi families. HFHMGC has constructed more than 300 homes since January 2007. We are proud of our many successes, but realize the extent of what remains to be done.
