During April 2008, the library’s only weekly evening hours provided patrons with a chance to see a movie shown on the big screen in the library auditorium. The program averaged about 20 viewers on each of the Thursdays, including children, teens, and a few adults. The program was easy to host and required little capital outlay. The technology librarian created the movie projector system out of the overhead LCD projector the library already owned, a couple of well-used paperback novels to prop it up, the DVD/VCR combination player already in the auditorium, and a pair of detachable speakers from a computer in the children’s department. The “big screen” was a blank wall. The whole event provided an excellent opportunity to make connections with community businesses for advertising and to let the public as a whole know about one of the collections the library offers. Movies shown at each event were part of library’s regular circulating collection, and folding chairs from the auditorium provided the seating. Our biggest investment was the staff time to cover the program. Each “Movie Night” took little time to prepare, and the amount of clean-up depended on how many of the viewers took the “bring your own popcorn” policy seriously. Each week, the type of movie varied. A Japanese anime title kicked off the series, followed by the touching movie, August Rush. The made-for-TV action movie “The Librarian: Quest for the Spear,” helped library patrons celebrate National Library Week. The series wrapped up with the comic fairy-tale, Enchanted. The viewers appreciated that the library validated their interests and invited others to join in the experience. Others who couldn’t attend the movie nights have checked out the movies they saw advertised for the program. During intermission, many viewers checked out library materials. An unexpected benefit generated by the movie nights was the opportunity to have conversations about copyright and licensing with teens as we discussed possible future events. Since then, many have asked when the library would hold its next movie night. This summer the teen summer reading program showed two new releases in the same Thursday night format. A Big Screen Doesn’t Cost Big Bucks: Thursday Nights are Movie Nights at the Library in Shenandoah, IowaJoy Stortvedt, Technology and Teen LibrarianShenandoah Public Library, Iowa

“In April, Thursday Nights are Movie Nights at the Shenandoah Public Library!” was the announcement people saw all over town on posters and table tents in schools and local businesses. During April 2008, the library’s only weekly evening hours provided patrons with a chance to see a movie shown on the big screen in the library auditorium. The program averaged about 20 viewers on each of the Thursdays, including children, teens, and a few adults.

The program was easy to host and required little capital outlay. The technology librarian created the movie projector system out of the overhead LCD projector

the library already owned, a couple of well-used paperback novels to prop it up, the DVD/VCR combination player already in the auditorium, and a pair of detachable speakers from a computer in the children’s department.

A Japanese anime title kicked off the series,

followed by the touching movie, August Rush.

The Plainfield Public Library supports the belief that a library should be more than just a collection of books, we strongly feel that we should be a gathering place for people to come and share experiences.

Choose your own type of adventure at the Plainfield Public Library in Plainfield, Illinois with Movie Licensing USA. That is exactly why our library has made Movie Licensing USA a part of our programming for adults and children alike. We offer monthly movie showings as well as special events and drop-in movies year-round. Our Great Movies for Adults series offers those 18 and older an opportunity to see new and classic films in the library once a month. All patrons need to bring is themselves; we supply the popcorn and drinks. Titles span many genres and include movies like Calendar Girls, Shadowlands, Saving Grace and Home for the Holidays.

Themed events have been a huge success for our library like our all day film festival featuring classic Elvis films for the 30th anniversary of his passing. We spiced things up by offering Hawaiian Punch and peanut butter and banana sandwiches and staff joined in by wearing Hawaiian shirts and their best Elvis impersonations. The movie festival included Viva Las Vegas, Blue Hawaii and Jailhouse Rock. A recent pirate

themed Summer Reading Club inspired showings of Pirates of the Caribbean, Cutthroat Island, Lord of the Flies and the classic 1935 Errol Flynn performance, Captain Blood.

Kids 17 and younger come along for the ride on school holidays for themed drop-in movies like Batteries not Included and Christmas Story. Teens and young adults also join in by participating in groups like the Afterhours Teen Film Society where teens attend movie screenings on Fridays once a month after the library has closed

for the evening. A different genre of film is chosen each month and included titles like Top Gun. Chicago favorites: The Blues Brothers and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off are always big hits! We have recently started a foreign film night for teens. Life is Beautiful was the inaugural film and some upcoming titles are Hate and Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams.

Like our community, our library is always evolving and experimenting with new ideas and programs to meet the needs of our patrons and Movie Licensing USA will continue to be a part of our progress for years to come.
